Dalaran is one of the most iconic cities in World of Warcraft — a floating magical metropolis that has served as the central hub for both the Wrath of the Lich King and Legion expansions. Whether you’re a returning player or a complete newcomer, finding your way to Dalaran can be confusing because there are actually two versions of the city in the game — one hovering above Crystalsong Forest in Northrend, and one floating above the Broken Isles. This guide covers every route to both.
How to Get to Dalaran — WotLK Classic (Northrend)
The WotLK version of Dalaran floats high above Crystalsong Forest in the heart of Northrend. Unlike previous capital cities, it is not freely accessible from the start — most players need to reach level 74 and complete a short quest chain to enter. Here are all the routes available, from every major city and zone.

How to Get to Dalaran from Stormwind (WotLK Classic)
Stormwind is the main Alliance hub, so this is the most common starting point for Alliance players heading to Dalaran.
- From Stormwind Harbor, take the ship to either:
- Borean Tundra (Valiance Keep) — fastest route to reach a Dalaran quest NPC
- Howling Fjord (Valgarde) — second option if you’re already questing there
- Once in Northrend, pick up the quest The Magical Kingdom of Dalaran from Magister Dath’omere at Valiance Keep (Borean Tundra) or Baron Ulrik von Stromhearth at Valgarde (Howling Fjord).
- Speak to the same NPC again — they will teleport you directly to Dalaran.
- Once inside, learn the flight path from Aludane Whitecloud at Krasus’ Landing so you can return easily later.
⚡ Pro Tip: Set your Hearthstone to Dalaran immediately after arriving. It’s the best hub city in all of WotLK.
How to Get to Dalaran from Orgrimmar (WotLK Classic)
Horde players leaving from Orgrimmar have two zeppelin options, both departing from the Zeppelin Tower outside the main gate.
- Take the zeppelin to Borean Tundra (Warsong Hold) — this is the faster route.
- At Warsong Hold, find Magistrix Kaelana and accept the quest The Magical Kingdom of Dalaran.
- Talk to her again — she teleports you straight to Dalaran.
- Alternatively, take the zeppelin to Howling Fjord (Vengeance Landing) and speak with Magister Varenthas for the same quest.
How to Get to Dalaran from Undercity (WotLK Classic)
Undercity has a direct zeppelin connection to Howling Fjord, making this a very convenient route for Horde players.
- Leave Undercity and head to the Zeppelin Tower in Tirisfal Glades.
- Take the zeppelin to Howling Fjord (Vengeance Landing).
- Pick up The Magical Kingdom of Dalaran from Magister Varenthas at Vengeance Landing (58.6, 62.6).
- Talk to him again for the instant teleport to Dalaran.
How to Get to Dalaran from Silvermoon City (WotLK Classic)
Silvermoon City doesn’t have a direct transport to Northrend, but you can route through Undercity quickly using the Orb of Translocation.
- In Silvermoon City, enter the Sunfury Spire behind Lor’themar Theron.
- Click the Orb of Translocation — this teleports you directly to Undercity.
- From Undercity, head to the Tirisfal Glades zeppelin tower.
- Take the zeppelin to Howling Fjord and follow the steps above to reach Dalaran.
How to Get to Dalaran from Warsong Hold (WotLK Classic)
If you’re already in Borean Tundra, Warsong Hold is the Horde’s main base and the fastest place to grab your first Dalaran port.
- Find Magistrix Kaelana inside Warsong Hold (coords 41.6, 53.6).
- Accept the quest The Magical Kingdom of Dalaran.
- Speak to her again — instant teleport to Dalaran. Done.
🎯 Note for Classic: You must be level 74 for this quest to appear. If you’re not there yet, keep leveling in Borean Tundra or Howling Fjord first.
How to Get to Dalaran from Howling Fjord (WotLK Classic)
Both Alliance and Horde have quest NPCs in Howling Fjord. This is usually where players first land when taking the Undercity zeppelin.
- Horde: Magister Varenthas at Vengeance Landing (58.6, 62.6)
- Alliance: Baron Ulrik von Stromhearth at Valgarde (58.6, 62.6)
Accept the quest, talk to the NPC again, and you’ll be instantly teleported to Dalaran. Simple as that.
How to Get to Dalaran from Crystalsong Forest (WotLK Classic)
The Teleportation Crystal in Crystalsong Forest is a convenient shortcut — but only after you’ve activated it from inside Dalaran first.
- After arriving in Dalaran for the first time, pick up the follow-up quest Learning to Leave and Return: the Magical Way from Archmage Celindra at the Violet Gate.
- Use the Upper Teleportation Crystal inside Dalaran to descend to Crystalsong Forest — this activates the lower crystal on the ground.
- From that point forward, the purple crystal in Violet Stand, Crystalsong Forest will teleport you directly back up to Dalaran anytime.

⚠️ Important: The crystal on the ground does nothing until you’ve first used the one inside Dalaran. Don’t waste time running there before activating it.
How to Get to Dalaran from Ebon Hold (Death Knight)
Death Knights begin their journey in Ebon Hold, which floats above the Eastern Plaguelands. Once you’ve completed the DK starter zone and joined the regular world:
- Your DK starts in the Eastern Kingdoms. Head to Orgrimmar or Stormwind as normal.
- Take the zeppelin or ship to Northrend.
- Once you have Cold Weather Flying (level 77, costs 1,000g), you can fly directly into Dalaran from Crystalsong Forest or Dragonblight.
- Alternatively, use the quest route at level 74 just like any other class.
🎯 Death Knights who have the Tome of Cold Weather Flight heirloom (available at level 80 from Dalaran) can fly in Northrend at level 68, making access much easier.
How to Get to Dalaran as a Mage (WotLK Classic)
Mages are the only class that can reach Dalaran earlier than level 74 and provide access for others.
- At level 71, complete the quest Attunement to Dalaran:
- Alliance: Speak with Image of Archmage Modera at Star’s Rest in Dragonblight.
- Horde: Speak with Image of Archmage Aethas Sunreaver at Agmar’s Hammer in Dragonblight.
- Learn Teleport: Dalaran as a reward — gives permanent personal teleport to Dalaran.
- At level 74, learn Portal: Dalaran from Archmage Celindra at the Violet Gate in Dalaran — allows you to create portals for your entire party.
⚡ A Mage with Portal: Dalaran is one of the most useful players in WotLK Classic. You can charge a small fee (typically 5–15g) for portals and earn gold quickly.
How to Get to Dalaran from Broken Isles / Dragon Isles / Pandaria (Retail)
In Retail WoW, the WotLK Dalaran (Northrend) is still accessible via the Dalaran (Northrend) portal in the Stormwind or Orgrimmar portal rooms. Once there, you can fly from Dalaran down to Northrend zones.
- From the Stormwind Portal Room (Mage Tower): look for the Dalaran (Northrend) portal.
- From the Orgrimmar Portal Room (Gates of Orgrimmar): same portal is available.
- From Valdrakken / Dragon Isles: Use the Stormwind or Orgrimmar portal rooms via your faction’s portal from Valdrakken.
- From Pandaria: Use the portal to Orgrimmar or Stormwind from the Shrine of Seven Stars / Shrine of Two Moons, then head to the portal room.
How to Get to Dalaran — Legion (Broken Isles / Retail)
The Legion version of Dalaran floats above the Broken Isles. This is the version most Retail players interact with in modern WoW — it’s also the gateway to The War Within expansion starting in Dornogal.
First Time: Start the Legion Questline
If you’ve never been to Legion Dalaran before, you must complete the intro questline:
- Alliance: Go to the Hero’s Call Board in Stormwind’s Trade District and select “Broken Shore.”
- Horde: Go to the Warchief’s Command Board near Grommash Hold in Orgrimmar and select “Broken Shore.”
- Alternatively, speak with Chromie near the Embassy in Stormwind or Orgrimmar and select “The Legion Invasion” timeline.
- Follow the Broken Shore scenario. At the conclusion, Dalaran is teleported to the Broken Isles — and you’re inside it.
- You receive a Dalaran Hearthstone (added to your Toy Box / Warband-wide) upon completion.
How to Get to Dalaran (Legion) from Stormwind
Once you’ve unlocked Legion Dalaran at least once on your Warband, returning is instant.
- Option 1 — Dalaran Hearthstone: Open your Toy Box and use the Dalaran Hearthstone. Teleports you directly to Legion Dalaran from anywhere.
- Option 2 — Portal Room: Enter the Stormwind Portal Room (top floor of the Mage Tower in the Mage District). Take the portal to Azsuna (Broken Isles). Fly northeast to Dalaran.
- Option 3 — Mage Portal: Ask a friendly Mage to open a Portal: Dalaran (Broken Isles).
How to Get to Dalaran (Legion) from Orgrimmar
- Option 1 — Dalaran Hearthstone: Same as above — use the Dalaran Hearthstone from your Toy Box.
- Option 2 — Portal Room: Enter Orgrimmar’s Portal Room (inside the Gates of Orgrimmar, underground in the Cleft of Shadow area). Take the portal to Azsuna and fly to Dalaran.
- Option 3 — Mage Portal: Find a Mage and ask for a portal to Dalaran (Broken Isles).
How to Get to Dalaran (Legion) from Broken Isles
If you’re already somewhere on the Broken Isles (Azsuna, Stormheim, Val’sharah, Highmountain, Suramar), Dalaran is easy to reach:
- Open your map — Dalaran floats above the center of the continent, northeast of Azsuna.
- Simply fly upward from any Broken Isles zone toward Dalaran’s location. The city is clearly visible in the sky.
- Land at Krasus’ Landing — the main flight point on the south side of the city.
How to Get to Dalaran (Legion) from Dragon Isles / Valdrakken
From Dragonflight content in Valdrakken:
- Use the Dalaran Hearthstone from your Toy Box (fastest method).
- Or take the portal from Valdrakken to Stormwind / Orgrimmar, then use the portal room’s Azsuna portal.
How to Get to Dalaran (Legion) from Dreadscar Rift / The Vindicaar
Class halls have dedicated transports inside Legion Dalaran. If you’re a Warlock returning from the Dreadscar Rift, or a player returning from the Vindicaar (Argus):
- Every class hall in Dalaran has a portal back into the city. The Chamber of the Guardian in central Dalaran contains the main portal hub.
- From Argus / The Vindicaar, use the Dalaran Hearthstone or find a portal NPC at the Vindicaar’s portal room to return to Dalaran.
How to Get to Dalaran (Legion) from Dornogal / Isle of Dorn / Khaz Algar (TWW)
In The War Within, Dalaran was destroyed during the journey to Khaz Algar. However, Legion Dalaran above the Broken Isles still exists and is fully accessible.
In fact, to start The War Within, you must first travel to Legion Dalaran and speak with Moira Thaurissan in the Portrait Room beneath the Chamber of the Guardian. The quest is called Slept Like a Rock.
To get back to Dalaran from Dornogal / Isle of Dorn:
- Use the Dalaran Hearthstone (Toy Box) — still works from Khaz Algar.
- Use the portal room in Stormwind or Orgrimmar — there are portals to Dornogal and to Azsuna / Dalaran.
- From Foundation Hall in Dornogal, take the portal to Stormwind (Alliance) or Orgrimmar (Horde), then head to your portal room.
Internal Flight Paths: Connecting Dalaran to the Rest of Northrend (WotLK)
Once inside Dalaran, it’s worth spending a few minutes connecting flight paths so you can fly back later from anywhere. Here’s the fastest way to connect Dalaran’s flight master to the rest of Northrend:
- Learn the Dalaran flight path from Aludane Whitecloud at Krasus’ Landing.
- Use the portal in the Alliance or Horde district of Dalaran to return to Stormwind or Orgrimmar.
- Take your ship/zeppelin to Borean Tundra or Howling Fjord.
- In Borean Tundra, head to Unu’pe on the southern coast and learn that flight path.
In Howling Fjord, head to Kamagua in the southwest and learn that flight path. - From either coast, take the turtle boat to Moa’ki Harbor in Dragonblight.
- Learn the Moa’ki Harbor flight path — your home city is now connected to Dalaran via a complete flight chain. ✅
