How to Get to Acherus: The Ebon Hold from All Cities | WoW Death Knight Guide

Acherus: The Ebon Hold (pronounced ACK-er-us) is a massive Scourge necropolis and the home base of the Knights of the Ebon Blade. It serves as the starting zone for all Death Knights in WoW — both Retail and Classic — and is one of the most iconic locations in the game’s history.

Acherus exists in two versions depending on which expansion content you’re doing:

Version Location Used For
Classic / Original Floating above Eastern Plaguelands (Scarlet Enclave) Death Knight starting zone, Runeforging
Legion (Order Hall) Floating above the Broken Shore, Broken Isles Legion class hall — Death Knights only

Death Gate is a Death Knight ability that allows the Death Knight to open a gate to Ebon Hold on a 1-minute cooldown. For Death Knights, this is always the fastest method — no portals, no flying required.

Death Knights: The Fastest Way — Death Gate

If you’re a Death Knight, you never need to worry about travel routes. Simply cast Death Gate anywhere, out of combat, and you’ll be teleported straight to Acherus.

Death Gate is a quest reward from The Light of Dawn (or Defender of Azeroth for Allied Race and Pandaren death knights), and will initially send you to Acherus in the Eastern Plaguelands. After obtaining your first artifact, it will instead transport you to the version of Acherus floating above the Broken Isles.

🎯 When you cast Death Gate from inside Acherus, it returns you to the nearest graveyard to where you were before — making it a two-way teleport system.

Which Acherus does Death Gate take you to?

  • Before Legion artifact: → Eastern Plaguelands version
  • After obtaining first Legion artifact: → Broken Shore version (Legion Order Hall)

Quick Summary: All Routes to Acherus

Starting Point Method Who Can Use It
Anywhere Cast Death Gate ☠️ Death Knights only
Stormwind Portal Room → Ironforge → fly to Eastern Plaguelands All classes
Orgrimmar Undercity → fly south to Eastern Plaguelands All classes
Dalaran (Northrend) Fly south to Eastern Plaguelands All classes
Broken Shore Fly to Broken Shore (Broken Isles version) ☠️ Death Knights only (non-DKs are ejected)

How to Get to Acherus from Stormwind (Non-Death Knight)

Acherus above the Eastern Plaguelands is reachable by anyone with a flying mount since Cataclysm opened flying in the old world.

  1. Go to the Portal Room in Stormwind (Mage Quarter).
  2. Take the portal to Ironforge (or use the Deeprun Tram from Stormwind’s Dwarven District).
  3. From Ironforge, pick up the flight path north through the Wetlands → Arathi Highlands → Hinterlands → Eastern Plaguelands.
  4. Land at Light’s Hope Chapel in the Eastern Plaguelands.
  5. Fly upward — Acherus floats high above the Scarlet Enclave at the eastern end of the zone.

⚡ Faster alternative: If you have the Dalaran (WotLK) Hearthstone, use it and fly south from Dalaran into the Eastern Plaguelands — much quicker than going through Ironforge.

How to Get to Acherus from Orgrimmar (Non-Death Knight)

  1. From Orgrimmar, take the portal or zeppelin to Undercity (Tirisfal Glades).
  2. From Undercity, pick up the flight path east through Silverpine Forest → Hillsbrad Foothills → Arathi Highlands → Hinterlands → Eastern Plaguelands.
  3. Land at Light’s Hope Chapel.
  4. Fly upward into Acherus above the eastern zone.

⚡ Horde players have a slight advantage here — the Undercity is much closer to the Eastern Plaguelands than Stormwind is, making the trip noticeably shorter.

How to Get to Acherus: The Ebon Hold (Eastern Plaguelands) — Step by Step

Once you’re in the Eastern Plaguelands:

  1. Head to the eastern end of the zone, past the Scarlet Enclave ruins (formerly Havenshire and New Avalon).
  2. Look up — Acherus is visible floating in the sky.
  3. Mount your flying mount and fly straight up into the necropolis.
  4. You’ll land on Acherus’s lower platform and can access vendors, Runeforges, and NPCs.

🎯 The necropolis floats above the coordinates roughly /way Eastern Plaguelands 80 29. If you have a flight path to Light’s Hope Chapel discovered, it puts you very close.

Acherus on the Broken Shore (Legion Version — Death Knights Only)

During Legion content and the Legion Order Hall campaign, Acherus moved to float above the Broken Shore in the Broken Isles.

If you try to fly to the Broken Isles version of Acherus without being a Death Knight, a guard riding a Winged Steed of the Ebon Blade will put you in chains and fly you back to Dalaran.

Death Knights only — how to reach it:

  1. Use Death Gate (fastest method — 1-minute cooldown).
  2. Or: Go to Dalaran (Legion) → fly south to the Broken Shore → fly up to Acherus.

Can Non-Death Knights Enter Acherus?

It depends on which version:

Eastern Plaguelands version: The only way for non-Death Knights to enter Acherus is by flying; if you are at least level 30 with a flying mount and have Expert Riding, you may freely enter and leave. Vendors will sell to you, but you can’t use the flight master inside, and the Winged Steed of the Ebon Blade mount is restricted to Death Knights only.

Broken Shore version (Legion): Non-Death Knights are automatically ejected and flown back to Dalaran. There is no way to access it without being a Death Knight.

WoW Classic: How to Get to Acherus

In WoW Classic (including WotLK Classic), Acherus works the same way — it floats above the Scarlet Enclave in the Eastern Plaguelands. All new Death Knights begin their journey here with the quest In Service of the Lich King and must complete the full Death Knight starting questline before leaving.

The zone is unique because you must complete the quests in it to leave, and as you travel to and from the beginning section of the zone, the appearance of the rest of the zone changes with each return trip.

Routes to Acherus in WoW Classic:

  • Death Knights: Cast Death Gate from anywhere — instant teleport back.
  • Non-Death Knights (Classic): Flying was not available in the old world in Classic, so only Death Knights and NPCs can access Acherus. There is no flying mount method in Classic as there is in Retail.

FAQ

How does a Death Knight get back to Acherus?

Cast Death Gate anywhere while out of combat. It has a 1-minute cooldown and teleports you directly to Acherus. All Death Knights in your party can also use a Death Gate you’ve opened. When cast from inside Acherus, it returns you to the graveyard nearest your original departure point.

Can non-Death Knight characters visit Acherus?

Yes, but only the Eastern Plaguelands version. Since Cataclysm enabled flying in the old world, any character with a flying mount and Expert Riding can fly up to Acherus above the Scarlet Enclave. You can talk to vendors and use Runeforges. However, the Broken Shore (Legion) version of Acherus is Death Knights only — non-DKs are automatically flown back to Dalaran by guards.

Where exactly is Acherus in the Eastern Plaguelands?

Acherus floats above the eastern end of the Eastern Plaguelands, over the Scarlet Enclave ruins (the former towns of Havenshire and New Avalon). Light’s Hope Chapel is the nearest ground-level landmark. Mount up and fly upward from the eastern part of the zone to reach it.

Which version of Acherus does Death Gate take you to?

Before you obtain your first Legion artifact weapon, Death Gate takes you to the Eastern Plaguelands version of Acherus. After obtaining your first artifact during Legion content, it instead takes you to the Broken Shore (Legion Order Hall) version.

Can I use Acherus as a rest area?

Yes. Acherus counts as a rest area for all characters, including on its outer surfaces. Any character who lands inside or on Acherus will accumulate rested XP. This applies to non-Death Knight visitors in the Eastern Plaguelands version as well.

How do I get to Acherus in WoW Classic as a non-Death Knight?

In WoW Classic, flying is not available in the old world, so non-Death Knight characters cannot reach Acherus. Only Death Knights (using Death Gate) and NPCs have access to the necropolis in Classic. Retail players with flying mounts can visit the Eastern Plaguelands version freely.
