How to Get to Gilneas from All Cities | WoW Cataclysm & Retail Guide

Gilneas is a walled human kingdom on a peninsula southwest of Silverpine Forest, best known as the starting zone for Worgen characters introduced in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Behind the legendary Greymane Wall, the kingdom fell to the worgen curse and the Forsaken invasion before King Genn Greymane led his people into exile.

Gilneas exists in different forms depending on what you’re doing in-game:

Worgen Characters: The Starting Zone

If you’ve created a Worgen character, you automatically begin in the instanced Gilneas starting zone — there’s no travel required. The experience is a fully phased, story-driven questline covering the fall of Gilneas City, the Forsaken invasion, and your character’s transformation.

The starting zone is accessible only to Worgen characters during the intro experience. Once you complete the questline and leave, the zone becomes the open-world Ruins of Gilneas for all players.

🎯 If you’re a Worgen who left the starting zone early and want to return: the instanced version is no longer accessible after you complete the intro and exit to the open world.

How to Get to Gilneas from Stormwind — Alliance (Reclaiming Gilneas Questline)

This route is for the Reclaiming Gilneas questline added in Dragonflight Patch 10.2.5: Seeds of Renewal.

1. In Valdrakken, find the Greyguard Elite NPC near the Stormwind portal — accept the quest Summons to Lord Greymane.
2. Take the Stormwind portal and head to Stormwind Harbor (/way 35 28).
3. Find Genn Greymane at the harbor — turn in the quest and accept To Gilneas.
4. Speak to Greymane again and confirm you’re ready — your character automatically mounts a gryphon and flies directly to Gilneas.

✅ No sailing or flight path required — you arrive in Gilneas City ready to begin the questline.

How to Get to Gilneas from Orgrimmar — Horde (Reclaiming Gilneas Questline)

Horde players also participate in the Reclaiming Gilneas story, approaching from Silverpine Forest.

1. In Orgrimmar, find the Deathguard Elite NPC just outside the portal room — accept the starting quest.
2. Take the Undercity zeppelin or portal from Orgrimmar to Undercity (Ruins of Lordaeron).
3. From Undercity, fly southwest into Silverpine Forest.
4. Follow the quest marker to /way Silverpine Forest 43 73 — speak to Calia Menethil and Lilian Voss in Pyrewood Village.
5. Follow them to the western shore — board the boat to Gilneas alongside Alliance contact Princess Tess Greymane.

🎯 The Horde route is arguably smoother since Undercity is already close to Silverpine Forest — less total travel time than the Alliance gryphon approach.

How to Get to the Ruins of Gilneas (Any Character, Any Time)

The Ruins of Gilneas — the open-world, non-instanced version of the peninsula — is accessible to everyone at any time using flying mounts. Both Alliance and Horde can reach the Ruins of Gilneas by foot through the breach in the Greymane Wall via southern Silverpine Forest.

From Stormwind (Alliance):

1. Portal Room → fly or take a flight path toward Ironforge.
2. From Ironforge, fly north through Wetlands → Arathi Highlands → Hillsbrad → Silverpine Forest.
3. Follow the road south through Silverpine until you reach the Greymane Wall breach.
4. Pass through the breach into the Ruins of Gilneas.

From Orgrimmar (Horde):

1. Zeppelin or portal to Undercity (Ruins of Lordaeron).
2. Fly southwest into Silverpine Forest.
3. Follow the road south to the Greymane Wall breach — ride through into the Ruins.

⚡ The Horde route is significantly shorter since Undercity is directly adjacent to Silverpine Forest.

Important: No Flight Paths in Gilneas

There are no flight paths or functional towns in the Ruins of Gilneas zone. Once you’re in the Ruins, you navigate entirely by flying mount or on foot. There’s no taxi system connecting Gilneas to the outside world — you fly in and fly out through the Greymane Wall breach.

The Reclaiming Gilneas questline transports you in and out automatically via gryphon (Alliance) or boat (Horde) as part of the story.

Worgen Bonus: Gilneas Hearthstone Toy

Players who complete the Reclaiming Gilneas questline (Patch 10.2.5) can obtain a toy that acts as a personal hearthstone to Gilneas City. The toy teleports you to Gilneas City with a 30-minute cooldown, though only Worgen characters can use it — all races can still obtain it.

This makes returning to Gilneas City effortless for Worgen players after completing the questline.

WoW Classic: Gilneas

Gilneas as a playable zone does not exist in WoW Classic (Vanilla). The Greymane Wall is present in the game world as a solid, impassable wall — there is simply nothing on the other side accessible to players. The Worgen starting experience and the Ruins of Gilneas were introduced with Cataclysm.

In Cataclysm Classic, the full Worgen starting zone is available — create a Worgen character and you’ll begin in instanced Gilneas automatically.
