How to Get to Shattrath City from Stormwind
Stormwind is the fastest and most reliable departure point for Alliance players in both Classic and Retail.
Classic (All Eras)
In TBC Classic, Cataclysm Classic, MoP Classic, and every other Classic era running post-2.4 content, head to the Stormwind portal room in the Mage Quarter. The portal to Shattrath sits on the northern side, right next to the Caverns of Time portal. Step through and you’ll land directly on the Terrace of Light.
If you’re playing through TBC Classic for the first time at the appropriate level instead of skipping ahead, the traditional route is:
- Take a flight or hearth to Stonard in Dustwallow Marsh, then continue to the Blasted Lands
- Step through the Dark Portal to arrive in Hellfire Peninsula
- Travel through Hellfire Peninsula into Zangarmarsh, then into Terokkar Forest, where Shattrath sits in the northwest corner
Once you’ve made the trip once, a Mage can train Teleport: Shattrath and Portal: Shattrath at level 68, letting your whole group skip the run entirely on future visits.
Retail
Retail makes this even simpler. Ethereal arcanists from the Consortium maintain a permanent portal to Shattrath inside the Wizard’s Sanctum in Stormwind’s portal room — no quest or level requirement needed. Just walk in and step through.
How to Get to Shattrath City from Orgrimmar
Classic (All Eras)
Horde players will find the Shattrath portal on the lower level of the Pathfinder’s Den in Orgrimmar’s portal room. It functions identically to the Alliance version in Stormwind.
For a first-time leveling route, Horde players should:
- Travel to Stonard in Dustwallow Marsh (reachable by flight path from most capitals)
- Head into the Blasted Lands and pass through the Dark Portal
- Continue through Hellfire Peninsula, Zangarmarsh, and into Terokkar Forest
Mages can train Teleport: Shattrath and Portal: Shattrath at level 68 to make future trips instant for the whole raid or party.
Retail
Just like Stormwind, Orgrimmar has a permanent Consortium-maintained portal to Shattrath located in the Pathfinder’s Den. No quest line required — it’s simply there for anyone who needs it. ✅
How to Get to Shattrath City from Ironforge
Classic (All Eras)
Ironforge has no direct portal to Shattrath in any Classic era. The fastest route is:
- Take the Deeprun Tram to Stormwind (or fly directly if you have the flight path)
- Use the Shattrath portal in Stormwind’s Mage Quarter portal room
If you’d rather level there organically, follow the same Stonard → Blasted Lands → Dark Portal → Hellfire Peninsula → Zangarmarsh → Terokkar Forest route described above.
Retail
Fly or use the Stormwind portal network to reach Stormwind, then take the Shattrath portal in the Wizard’s Sanctum. There is no shortcut directly from Ironforge.
How to Get to Shattrath City from Darnassus
Classic (All Eras)
Darnassus has no portal to Shattrath. Night Elves should fly or boat to Stormwind first (a direct flight path connects the two), then use the portal in the Mage Quarter.
Retail
Same approach — get to Stormwind via flight path or your hearthstone, then step through the Shattrath portal in the portal room.
How to Get to Shattrath City from The Exodar
Classic (All Eras)
The Exodar has no direct Shattrath portal either. Draenei players should take a boat or flight to Darnassus or Stormwind, then continue through the Stormwind portal room. If you’re leveling organically instead, Stonard → Blasted Lands → Dark Portal is the standard path from any Alliance capital.
Retail
Route through Stormwind for the permanent Shattrath portal — there’s no direct connection from The Exodar itself.
How to Get to Shattrath City from Undercity
Classic (All Eras)
Undercity has its own portal to Silvermoon City, but not to Shattrath directly. The fastest route is:
- Use the Translocation Orb or portal in Undercity to reach Silvermoon City
- From Silvermoon, take the portal to Shattrath that sits in the city, or fly/hearth back to Orgrimmar and use the portal room instead
