Getting to Northrend is the first real milestone of the Wrath of the Lich King story, and whether you’re leveling through WoW Classic Anniversary, playing WotLK Classic, or jumping in from current-day Retail, the route is simpler than it looks once you know which dock, zeppelin tower, or portal room to head for. This guide covers every method 🧭 — ships, zeppelins, mage portals, and the Chromie Time shortcut — for both Alliance and Horde.

📌 Quick answer: Alliance players sail from Stormwind Harbor or Menethil Harbor, Horde players take a zeppelin from Orgrimmar or Undercity, and anyone on a max-level character can simply use the Dalaran portal in their capital city’s Portal Room.

Level Requirement to Enter Northrend

You need to be at least level 68 to enter Northrend in WotLK Classic, and the introductory questline that sends you there, Wrath of the Lich King: To Northrend!, unlocks at level 10 so you can pick it up early and travel once you hit the level requirement. In Retail through Chromie Time, you can start the Northrend storyline well below level 68, since the zone content scales to your character.

How to Get to Northrend as Alliance

Alliance players have two boats to choose from, depending on which starting zone you want: Borean Tundra or Howling Fjord.

From Stormwind City to Borean Tundra

Head to Stormwind Harbor and look for the northernmost dock. A ship called The Kraken docks there and sails directly to Valiance Keep in Borean Tundra. This is the fastest route to Northrend if you’re starting from Eastern Kingdoms ⚓.

From Wetlands to Howling Fjord

If you’d rather start in Howling Fjord, travel to Menethil Harbor in the Wetlands, just north of Ironforge and Dun Morogh. The boat there, The Northspear, takes you to Daggercap Bay.

From Orgrimmar to Borean Tundra

Go to the western zeppelin tower just outside Orgrimmar’s southern gates. The zeppelin there, The Mighty Wind, flies straight to Warsong Hold in Borean Tundra. Be careful: there are two towers at that location, and the other one flies to Thunder Bluff instead.

From Undercity to Howling Fjord

For Howling Fjord, head to the zeppelin tower outside Undercity, between the city and Brill in Tirisfal Glades. This zeppelin lands at Vengeance Landing.

Getting to a Capital City First (If You’re Starting Elsewhere)

From Thunder Bluff

Take the zeppelin from the northwestern dock on Spirit Rise straight to Orgrimmar’s western zeppelin tower, or use the Thunder Bluff–Orgrimmar flight path once you’ve unlocked it. From Orgrimmar, follow the Horde route above.

From Darnassus

Use the portal near the bank in Darnassus to reach Rut’theran Village, then take the boat docked there straight to Stormwind Harbor. From Stormwind, follow the Alliance route above.

From Ebon Hold (Death Knight Starting Zone)

After finishing the Death Knight introductory questline, you’ll be offered a one-way portal straight out of Acherus to Stormwind (Alliance) or Orgrimmar (Horde). From there, head to the harbor or zeppelin tower as described above.

From Kalimdor or Eastern Kingdoms in General

“Kalimdor” and “Eastern Kingdoms” are continents, not single cities, so the fastest move is to reach your faction’s main capital on that continent first. On Kalimdor, that means heading to Orgrimmar (Horde) and picking up the zeppelin to Borean Tundra. On Eastern Kingdoms, that means heading to Stormwind (Alliance) and taking the boat from Stormwind Harbor. Once you’re in either capital, the routes above apply directly.

How to Get to Northrend in Retail (Chromie Time)

In current Retail, the path is even easier thanks to Chromie Time. ⚡

1. Find Chromie in Stormwind (Alliance) or near the Orgrimmar Embassy (Horde). You must be below level 60 to access Chromie Time.
2. Talk to her and select “Fall of the Lich King” as your timeline.
3. This starts the Wrath of the Lich King: To Northrend! quest, which points you to the correct boat or zeppelin automatically.
4. Alternatively, skip the questline entirely and just walk into a Portal Room in any major hub — Valdrakken, Dornogal, Silvermoon City, Ironforge, Shattrath City, Stormwind, or Orgrimmar all have a direct “Portal to Dalaran – Northrend” you can use at any level.
