New to Ascension WoW and staring at the realm select screen wondering where to actually create your character? You’re not alone — Ascension runs several distinct realms, and picking the wrong one can mean starting over later. This guide breaks down the two most important ones for new Classless players, Area 52 and Elune, plus a quick look at where the other realms fit in.
Area 52: The Free-Pick Classless Realm
Area 52 is Ascension’s original and longest-running server, with new players creating characters there every single day. On Area 52, you get true Free-Pick classless play — you choose exactly which abilities, talents, and Mystic Enchants you want from any class to build your hero, with no restrictions on what you combine.
If you’re not sure where to start, you can lean on two built-in tools:

- Hero Archetypes — pre-built, role-focused characters available at character creation for a more structured starting point if total freedom feels overwhelming.
Area 52 is generally the recommended starting point for new players, since it’s the most established realm with the deepest population and the most build guides already written for it.
Elune: The Wildcard Seasonal Realm
Elune is Ascension’s current seasonal server and runs on a different philosophy: Wildcard Mode. Instead of freely picking every ability yourself, you’re given randomly selected groups of abilities to choose from as you level, creating emergent, sometimes chaotic builds you didn’t plan for. You can still browse the Hero Architect for inspiration, but ultimately you have to work with what you’re given rather than architecting a build from scratch.
As a seasonal realm, Elune periodically resets: every new season starts everyone at level 1 on a clean slate, with no Legacy collection carryover and all Server First achievements reset for fresh competition. Progress and characters eventually transition to the legacy realms once a season concludes, so Elune is a good choice if you like fresh starts, competitive server-first races, and the surprise factor of not knowing exactly what your build will look like.

What About the Other Realms?
Area 52 and Elune are Ascension’s flagship Classless realms, but they’re not the only options in the launcher. A few others worth knowing about:
- Bronzebeard (Warcraft Reborn) — a Classic+ realm dedicated solely to the Original 9 traditional WoW classes (Warrior, Mage, Rogue, Hunter, Shaman, Warlock, Priest, Paladin, Druid), enhanced with new race/class combinations, new talents, and Ascension’s custom content — no classless system here.

- Grizzly Hills — an alpha-phase realm focused on Wrath of the Lich King content.
Characters can’t transfer between these realms since the gameplay systems differ so much, but you can create and maintain characters on as many realms as you like from the same account.
