Suramar is one of the most unique zones in World of Warcraft — a locked, story-gated region on the Broken Isles that you can’t simply fly into from the start. The zone is tied to the Legion campaign and requires completing an intro quest chain before you can access it freely. Once unlocked, however, getting there is fast from virtually every major hub in the game.
This guide covers how to reach Suramar from Orgrimmar, Stormwind, Dalaran (Broken Isles), Silvermoon City, Valdrakken, Dornogal, and Quel’Thalas, with notes on the unlock requirement that applies to all routes.
Before You Travel: Unlocking Suramar
🎯 Important: Suramar is a quest-locked zone. You cannot simply portal in on a fresh character — you must complete a short intro chain first.
How to Start the Suramar Unlock
The chain starts in your Class Order Hall in Legion Dalaran. You need to have progressed through your class campaign far enough to unlock the Scouting Map. Select Suramar on the map to receive the quest Khadgar’s Discovery.
From there:
- Travel to the Violet Citadel in Dalaran and speak with Archmage Khadgar.
- Interact with the Arcane Anomaly (the purple orb in front of him).
- Accept Trail of Echoes and step through the Portal to Suramar right in front of Khadgar.
- Use Khadgar’s Wand to track arcane echoes, defeat Erasmus Moonblade, and find First Arcanist Thalyssra.
- Escort Thalyssra to Shal’Aran — your base of operations in Suramar. ✅ Zone unlocked.
Once this is done, the Portal to Suramar in front of Khadgar in Dalaran stays open permanently, and all the routes below become available.
How to Get to Suramar from Dalaran (Broken Isles)
This is the fastest and most direct route — Dalaran is Suramar’s neighboring hub city.
Via the Portal in the Violet Citadel
Once the intro quest chain is complete, a permanent Portal to Suramar sits in front of Archmage Khadgar inside the Violet Citadel in Dalaran. Walk in, click the portal, and you’re in Suramar in seconds.
Via Flying
If you have flying unlocked on the Broken Isles, Suramar is directly south of Dalaran. Drop off Krasus’ Landing and fly south — you’ll cross into Suramar in under a minute.
⚡ Fastest method overall: Use your Dalaran Hearthstone (available as a Toy after completing the Legion intro) to teleport to Dalaran, then step through the Violet Citadel portal.
How to Get to Suramar from Orgrimmar
Via the Orgrimmar Portal Room
The Orgrimmar portal room (Pathfinder’s Den, in the Valley of Strength) has a portal to Azsuna on the Broken Isles.
- Take the Azsuna portal in the Orgrimmar portal room.
- Once in Azsuna, fly east toward Dalaran (it floats visibly on your map).
- From Dalaran, use the Violet Citadel portal to Suramar.
Via Chromie Time (Leveling Characters)
If you’re leveling and haven’t started the Legion campaign yet:
- Find Chromie near the Orgrimmar Embassy.
- Select The Legion Invasion timeline.
- Complete the intro quests — they’ll send you to the Broken Shore and eventually to Dalaran, from where you can unlock Suramar.
How to Get to Suramar from Stormwind
Via the Stormwind Portal Room
The Stormwind portal room (Mage Tower in the Mage Quarter) also has a portal to Azsuna.
- Take the Azsuna portal from the Stormwind portal room.
- Fly east to Dalaran (the floating city above the Broken Isles).
- Enter the Violet Citadel and use the portal to Suramar.
Via Chromie Time (Alliance Levelers)
- Find Chromie near the Stormwind Embassy.
- Select the Legion timeline and follow the intro chain to Dalaran.
- From there, unlock Suramar through the class order hall Scouting Map.
How to Get to Suramar from Silvermoon City
Silvermoon City doesn’t have a direct portal to the Broken Isles, but it’s well-connected to Orgrimmar.
- From Silvermoon, use the Orb of Translocation at the Ruins of Lordaeron (above Undercity) to teleport to Undercity, then take the zeppelin to Orgrimmar — or use the portal inside Silvermoon’s Sunfury Spire to reach Undercity directly.
- From Orgrimmar, use the portal room (see route above) → Azsuna → Dalaran → Suramar.

🎯 Shortcut: Horde Mages can cast Teleport: Dalaran – Broken Isles or open a group portal directly to Legion Dalaran, skipping the Silvermoon → Orgrimmar leg entirely.
How to Get to Suramar from Valdrakken
Valdrakken is the Dragon Isles hub from Dragonflight. It has a portal room that connects to older expansion hubs.
- In Valdrakken, go to the portal room (central area near the city’s main rings).
- Look for the Portal to Dalaran (Broken Isles) — it’s present in Valdrakken.
- Step through to Dalaran.
- Use the Violet Citadel portal → Suramar.
⚡ This is a clean two-portal route: Valdrakken → Dalaran → Suramar.
How to Get to Suramar from Dornogal
Dornogal is the main hub city for The War Within expansion. Its portal room is one of the best-connected in the game.
- In Dornogal, go to the portal room inside the main building.
- Take the Portal to Dalaran (Broken Isles) — Dornogal has 20 instances of this portal object, making it easily accessible.
- From Dalaran, use the Violet Citadel portal → Suramar.
Just like with Valdrakken, this is a clean two-portal trip. Dornogal is the best starting point for any current-content player who needs to visit Suramar quickly for legacy farming or transmog runs.
How to Get to Suramar from Quel’Thalas
Quel’Thalas is the blood elf homeland in the far north of the Eastern Kingdoms and is currently being redesigned as the setting for the upcoming Midnight expansion. Getting from Quel’Thalas to Suramar requires routing through Orgrimmar or using a Mage.
Horde Route
- From Silvermoon City in Quel’Thalas, use the Orb of Translocation to reach Undercity.
- Take the zeppelin to Orgrimmar.
- Use the Orgrimmar portal room → Azsuna → fly to Dalaran.
- Violet Citadel portal → Suramar.
Fastest Option
If your character has previously visited Dalaran, the Dalaran Hearthstone (in your Toy Box) is available to all Warband characters. Pop it from anywhere in Quel’Thalas and you’re in Dalaran in seconds — one portal away from Suramar.

Once you arrive, Suramar is a massive zone with several distinct areas worth knowing:
- ⚔️ Shal’Aran — your base of operations, hub for First Arcanist Thalyssra and the Nightfallen story
- ⚔️ Suramar City (The Waning Crescent) — disguise-based gameplay inside the nightborne city
- ⚔️ Felsoul Hold — Legion-controlled territory with daily quest objectives
- ⚔️ Falanaar — underground area with a leyline network
- 🏹 The Nighthold — the zone’s centerpiece raid, entrance at coords 44.1, 60.1
The zone is fully soloable at current gear levels for legacy content. Flying is available in Suramar if you have Broken Isles Pathfinder, Part One completed.
