Tanaan Jungle is one of the more confusing zones to access in all of World of Warcraft, because the route depends entirely on when your character actually played through Warlords of Draenor. There are two completely different situations here, and figuring out which one applies to you is the first step.
If you’re leveling a fresh character through Draenor using Chromie Time, Tanaan is now your starting zone. If you have an old level 100 character who stalled out before patch 6.2 finished its Garrison campaign, you’re looking at the original 2015-era unlock requirements instead. This guide covers both.
Path 1: Fresh Characters Leveling Through Chromie Time
This is by far the most common situation in current Retail, since Warlords of Draenor is widely considered one of the fastest Chromie Time options for leveling alts.
How to Start
- Travel to Stormwind or Orgrimmar and find Chromie at the Allied Race embassy
- Select “The Iron Horde” from Chromie’s Timewalking Campaigns list
- Talk to the Vanguard Battlemage inside Stormwind’s Mage Tower (Alliance) or Orgrimmar’s Pathfinder’s Den (Horde) for an instant teleport to the Blasted Lands
- Step through the Dark Portal to begin the Warlords of Draenor intro scenario, which drops you directly into Tanaan Jungle
You’ll play through a short introductory scenario in Tanaan before being moved on to Shadowmoon Valley or Frostfire Ridge to begin your Garrison and continue leveling normally. ✅ No Garrison level or Shipyard is required for this version of the zone — it’s purely a starting-zone experience.
Path 2: Old Level 100 Characters Returning to Unlock Tanaan
If your character already finished leveling through Draenor years ago but never built a Shipyard, you’re dealing with the original patch 6.2 unlock chain. This is common for returning players or characters that were boosted straight to max level.

Step-by-Step Unlock
- Upgrade your Garrison’s Town Hall to level 3 — this requires Garrison Resources and gold, both of which accumulate naturally from normal Garrison missions and questing
- Once at level 3, speak to Varian Wrynn (Alliance) or Vol’jin (Horde), who starts the Garrison Campaign quest “War Council”
- Travel to the Iron Docks to recruit a Shipwright
- Complete the short quest chain to break Roark out of a prison train and recover his ship blueprints
- Return to your Garrison to construct the Shipyard
- Build your first Transport ship at the Shipyard, then speak to Khadgar to begin the assault on Tanaan Jungle
Once this chain is complete, Tanaan Jungle and its quest hubs, treasure locations, and Hellfire Citadel raid entrance are permanently unlocked on that character. The raid entrance itself sits atop a fortress near the center of the zone, guarded by a large demonic gate. 🎯
Why Visit Tanaan Jungle Today
Even though Warlords of Draenor is long past its current-content days, Tanaan Jungle still has plenty of reasons to visit in 2026:
- ✅ Hellfire Citadel sits at the center of the zone and remains a popular transmog and mount farming raid, with 13 bosses including a final fight against Archimonde himself
- ✅ The Mythic-only Felsteel Annihilator mount still drops from Mythic Archimonde, alongside full Tier 18 armor sets across all difficulties
- ✅ Dozens of rare spawns and Champions of Hellfire Citadel are scattered across the zone, many with a chance to drop unique mounts, pets, and gear you can’t get anywhere else, including ground mounts like the Warsong Direfang and Armored Razorback
- ✅ Treasure maps from faction representatives reveal hidden treasure locations across the jungle for players who enjoy exploration-style content
- 🎯 The zone can be soloed comfortably at almost any modern level, making it a relaxed weekly stop for collectors and transmog farmers

Quick Tips
- ⚡ If you’re not sure which situation applies to you, check your Garrison level first. A level 3 Garrison with no Shipyard means you need Path 2
- ✅ Garrison Resources and gold for the Shipyard upgrade come naturally from regular Garrison missions — you don’t need to grind anything special
- ❌ Don’t try to swim or fly into Tanaan before unlocking it. The coastline is blocked by hostile elite creatures and there’s no way around the gate
- 🎯 If you only want Hellfire Citadel for transmog or mount farming, you still need to complete the full unlock chain first — there’s no shortcut around it
- ⚡ Bring a flying mount once you’re inside; most of Tanaan’s rares and treasures are spread across a large area and flying makes farming far more efficient
