Want to capture your epic WoW moments — a clutch PvP kill, a hilarious wipe, or a perfect meme clip? Whether you’re saving memories or submitting clips to content creators, recording your World of Warcraft gameplay is easier than you think.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through three free methods to record WoW gameplay on PC — no paid software needed.
What You Need Before You Start
Before recording, make sure you have:
✅ A PC running World of Warcraft
✅ One of the free tools listed below
✅ 5–10 minutes to set everything up
That’s it. Let’s get into it.
Method 1 — OBS Studio (Best Free Option)
OBS Studio is the go-to free recording tool for WoW players. It’s open source, lightweight, and gives you full control over quality and settings.
Step 1 — Download & Install OBS
Go to obsproject.com and download OBS Studio for Windows or Mac. Install it like any normal program.
Step 2 — Add World of Warcraft as a Source
1. Open OBS Studio
2. Under the Sources panel, click the + button
3. Select Game Capture
4. Name it “World of Warcraft” and click OK
5. Set Mode to Capture specific window
6. Select World of Warcraft from the dropdown
7. Click OK
Step 3 — Set Your Recording Settings
Go to Settings → Output → Recording:
| Setting | Recommended Value |
|---|---|
| Format | MP4 |
| Encoder | Hardware (NVIDIA/AMD) if available |
| Quality | High Quality |
Go to Settings → Video:
| Setting | Recommended Value |
|---|---|
| Base Resolution | 1920×1080 |
| Output Resolution | 1920×1080 |
| FPS | 60 |
Click Apply and OK.
Step 4 — Record Vertically for WoW Shorts (9:16)
If you want to submit clips or create YouTube Shorts:
1. Go to Settings → Video
2. Change Base Resolution to 1080×1920
3. Change Output Resolution to 1080×1920
💡 This records in vertical format — perfect for YouTube Shorts and TikTok!
Step 5 — Start Recording
1. Launch World of Warcraft
2. Switch back to OBS
3. Click Start Recording
4. Play your game
5. When done, click Stop Recording
Your file saves automatically. To find it: Settings → Output → Recording Path
Method 2 — Xbox Game Bar (Easiest, No Download Needed)
Already on Windows 10 or 11? You already have a built-in recorder — no installation needed.
How to Use Xbox Game Bar
1. Open World of Warcraft
2. Press Win + Alt + R to start recording
3. Press Win + Alt + R again to stop
That’s it! Your clip saves automatically to:
C:\Users\YourName\Videos\Captures
⚡ Quick Tip: Press Win + Alt + G to save only the last 30 seconds — great for capturing moments after they happen!
Method 3 — NVIDIA ShadowPlay (Best for NVIDIA GPU Users)
If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, ShadowPlay is the lowest-impact recording tool — it barely affects your FPS.
How to Set Up ShadowPlay
1. Download and install GeForce Experience from nvidia.com
2. Open GeForce Experience
3. Press Alt + Z to open the overlay
4. Go to Settings → Video Capture
5. Set your resolution, FPS, and bitrate
6. Press Alt + F9 to start/stop recording
💡 ShadowPlay also has an Instant Replay feature — it constantly records the last 5–20 minutes in the background. Press Alt + F10 to save the last few minutes anytime!
Which Method Should You Choose?
| Method | Best For | FPS Impact | Setup Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Full control & quality | Low | 10 min |
| Xbox Game Bar | Quick & easy | Medium | 0 min |
| NVIDIA ShadowPlay | NVIDIA GPU users | Very Low | 5 min |
Fix Common Recording Problems
Black Screen in OBS?
→ Right-click OBS → Run as Administrator
→ Or switch Game Capture mode to Capture any fullscreen application
FPS Dropping While Recording?
→ Switch to Hardware encoder (NVIDIA/AMD) in OBS settings
→ Lower your in-game graphics temporarily
→ Use Xbox Game Bar or ShadowPlay instead — lighter on CPU
No Audio in Recording?
→ In OBS, check the Audio Mixer — make sure Desktop Audio is not muted
→ Go to Settings → Audio and set your Desktop Audio device
Audio Out of Sync?
→ In OBS Settings → Output, make sure Encoder is set to Constant Framerate (CFR) — Variable Framerate causes audio desync in long sessions
