Zangarmarsh is a breath of fresh air after the chaos of Hellfire Peninsula. The phosphorescent mushroom forests, the eerie stillness of Serpent Lake, and the noticeably lighter mob competition make this zone one of the most pleasant stretches of the entire 1–70 journey. You’ll be here from roughly levels 62 to 64, and you’ll leave better geared, with meaningful Cenarion Expedition reputation, and two more dungeon chains under your belt.
This guide covers everything: faction hubs, quest flow, the Coilfang Reservoir dungeon complex, Cenarion Expedition reputation, and when to move on to Terokkar Forest.
Zone Overview
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Level Range | 62–64 (enter at 62, leave at 64) |
| Primary Reputation | Cenarion Expedition |
| Main Hub | Cenarion Refuge (neutral, both factions) |
| Alliance Hub | Telredor (secondary) |
| Horde Hub | Zabra’jin (secondary) |
| Dungeons | The Slave Pens, The Underbog, The Steamvault (later) |
| Key to Get Here | Road west from Hellfire Peninsula |
Zangarmarsh connects to Hellfire Peninsula to the east, Terokkar Forest to the south, Nagrand to the south, and Blade’s Edge Mountains to the north. You’ll exit south to Terokkar when you’re done here.
First Steps: Setting Up in Zangarmarsh
When you cross into Zangarmarsh from Hellfire Peninsula, your first stop is Cenarion Refuge — the neutral hub in the center of the zone. Both Alliance and Horde use this as the primary leveling anchor. Set your Hearthstone here immediately. You’ll be returning constantly to turn in quests.
At Cenarion Refuge, do this on arrival:
- Pick up every quest from both buildings in the Refuge
- Accept The Dying Balance from Lethyn Moonfire inside the inn
- Accept Disturbance at Umbrafen Lake and Warden Hamoot from Ysiel Windsinger
- Get the flight path before leaving
After Cenarion Refuge, head to your faction-specific hub:
Alliance — Telredor (east side of zone)
- Take the elevator up to reach the NPCs
- Pick up every quest on the board, including Too Many Mouths to Feed, The Fate of Tuurem, and Diaphanous Wings
- Get the flight path
- Note: Some quests here require level 62 — if you arrived at 61, you may need to do a dungeon run in Hellfire first to ding before picking them up
Horde — Zabra’jin (west-central zone)
- Accept Angling to Beat the Competition, wanted poster quests, and other hub quests
- Get the flight path
- Horde players also use Swamprat Post on the east side for additional quests
🎯 Minimum level to enter Zangarmarsh: You technically can enter at 60, but level 62 is strongly recommended. Several quests in the zone are gated at 62, and the dungeon content runs smoother at that level. If you arrive at 61, knock out a Hellfire Ramparts run first to reach 62.
Quest Flow: How to Move Through the Zone
Unlike Hellfire Peninsula, Zangarmarsh has a slower pace and more spread-out quest objectives. The efficient approach is to chain quests hub-by-hub and stack objectives that share the same killing fields.
Phase 1 — Umbrafen Lake and surrounding area (first session):
Start at Cenarion Refuge and head southwest to Umbrafen Lake. Several quests overlap here, letting you complete multiple objectives in one loop:
- Kill Mire Hydras for Too Many Mouths to Feed (Alliance)
- Kill naga for Leader of the Darkcrest and Leader of the Bloodscale
- Collect Unidentified Plant Parts from naga and wildlife — keep every single one, they’re used for Cenarion Expedition reputation
- Pick up Umbraglow Stingers wings for Diaphanous Wings (Alliance) while killing nearby mobs
⚡ Unidentified Plant Parts drop from most naga and bog creatures throughout Zangarmarsh. Collect every one. They’re used for the Uncatalogued Species repeatable turn-in at Cenarion Refuge that grants Cenarion Expedition rep. Don’t vendor or destroy them.
Phase 2 — Serpent Lake and Naga Steam Pumps:
Head west to Serpent Lake. Multiple quests send you to the steam pump consoles around the lake’s shore. While here:
- Use Ironvine Seeds at pump consoles (accept the quest from Watcher Jhang near Coilfang Reservoir)
- Look for Rajis Fyashe, an elite naga — group up with nearby players for this, or skip it
- This is also your first look at the entrance to Coilfang Reservoir underwater at roughly (50, 41) — you’ll swim down into the drain for dungeon access
Phase 3 — Zabra’jin and Feralfen area (Horde) / Orebor Harborage (Alliance):
Both factions have a secondary hub in the western half of the zone. Clear quests here — they’re dense and close together. The Feralfen area has kill quests that often stack with collection objectives, making this one of the more efficient sections of the zone.
Phase 4 — Dungeon runs at Coilfang Reservoir:
At some point during your questing, you should run both The Slave Pens and The Underbog with dungeon quests active. See the Dungeon section below.
Coilfang Reservoir: The Zangarmarsh Dungeon Complex
All three Zangarmarsh dungeons share a single entrance. To reach Coilfang Reservoir, swim to the center of Serpent Lake at approximately (50, 41) and dive down — follow the bubbles rising from the drain and swim through the underwater pipe. You’ll emerge inside the reservoir hub, which connects to all three dungeon instances.
The entrance is inside the cave system at roughly (49, 36) for Slave Pens and (54, 33) for the Underbog.
The Slave Pens
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Level Range | 61–65 (Normal) |
| Clear Time | 20–30 minutes |
| Bosses | Mennu the Betrayer, Rokmar the Crackler, Quagmirran |
| Rep Per Normal Run | ~500 Cenarion Expedition (caps at Friendly) |
| Heroic Key | Reservoir Key — Revered with Cenarion Expedition |
The Slave Pens is the priority dungeon in Zangarmarsh. It’s faster than The Underbog, has good trash density for XP and rep, and is one of the better gear-reward dungeons in this range. You’ll spam this dungeon more than any other in the zone.
Dungeon quest — Lost in Action:
This quest is picked up from Watcher Jhang inside Coilfang Reservoir (just outside the dungeon entrance). No prerequisite required — both factions can grab it immediately. It spans two dungeons:
- In The Slave Pens: Find Naturalist Bite (after the first boss area, when you jump into water, at the top of the ramp) and Weeder Greenthumb (left side of Quagmirran’s room — warning: speaking to him triggers a naga ambush, clear the area first)
- In The Underbog: Find Earthbinder Rayge (after the second boss, at the end of the hall) and Windcaller Claw (he’s actually the bear companion of the third boss, Swamplord Musel’ek — defeat Musel’ek first, then let Claw’s health drop to ~20% and he’ll break free as a friendly NPC)
Turn in Lost in Action at Watcher Jhang for a choice of Cenarion Ring of Casting, Dark Cloak of the Marsh, or Goldenvine Wraps, plus a significant XP reward and 500 Cenarion Expedition rep.
Boss notes:
- Mennu the Betrayer — He summons Totems throughout the fight. Prioritize destroying the Corrupted Nova Totem immediately to avoid its AoE nova damage. Assign one player to totem duty every fight.
- Rokmar the Crackler — He applies a stacking bleed debuff on the tank. Healers need to monitor tank health carefully during this fight, as the bleed ticks harder the longer it stacks. DPS should burn him quickly.
- Quagmirran — He randomly sprays poison in a cone. Position ranged players on opposite sides of the room to minimize how many people get hit. Don’t stand directly behind him as melee.
Notable loot: Coilfang Hammer of Renewal (healer mace), Runed Fungalcap (caster off-hand), Spellfire Longsword
The Underbog
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Level Range | 63–65 (Normal) |
| Clear Time | 35–45 minutes |
| Bosses | Hungarfen, Ghaz’an, Swamplord Musel’ek, The Black Stalker |
| Rep Per Normal Run | ~1,500 Cenarion Expedition (caps at Honored) |
| Heroic Key | Reservoir Key — same key as Slave Pens |
The Underbog is slightly longer than The Slave Pens and has four bosses instead of three. The mob density feels more spread out, which is why most dungeon-focused levelers prioritize Slave Pens for pure spam — but Underbog gives significantly more Cenarion Expedition reputation per normal run (capping at Honored vs Friendly for Slave Pens) and the quest rewards are worth doing it at least once.
Dungeon quests:
- Lost in Action (continued from Slave Pens) — find Earthbinder Rayge and Windcaller Claw as described above
- Stalk the Stalker — kill The Black Stalker (final boss); requires being at least Friendly with Sporeggar to pick up from their camp south of the Underbog entrance
Sporeggar side note: The Sporeggar faction has a small camp in the southwestern part of Zangarmarsh. Some Underbog quests require Friendly standing with Sporeggar to unlock. You can reach Friendly quickly by turning in Glowcap mushrooms collected throughout the zone. It’s worth doing if you want the extra Underbog quest.
Boss notes:
- Hungarfen — The Underbog Mushroom spores he spawns can be ignored in Normal mode; DPS can burn through him quickly. Cleanse the Spore debuff on the tank if your class allows it.
- Ghaz’an — A hydra. His Tail Sweep can knock players into the water — position carefully and keep the group away from the edge. Cleanse Acid Spit from the tank.
- Swamplord Musel’ek — Musel’ek uses Claw (his bear companion) to attack players. DPS Musel’ek first and ignore Claw. When Claw drops to 20% health from AoE or incidental damage, he breaks free as a friendly NPC — don’t kill him before the fight ends or you fail the Lost in Action quest step.
- The Black Stalker — She levitates a random player and zaps the party with chain lightning. When levitated, that player is helpless. Healers should pre-HoT whoever she targets. Burn her fast.
The Steamvault (Level 70 Content)
The Steamvault is also located in Coilfang Reservoir but is designed for level 70 players. It’s not relevant while leveling through Zangarmarsh — you’ll return here after reaching 70 for Cenarion Expedition reputation farming and gear. Normal Steamvault rep goes all the way to Exalted, making it the primary source for pushing to Revered and beyond after the leveling dungeon rep caps out.
Cenarion Expedition Reputation — Why It Matters
This is the most important long-term reputation you build in Zangarmarsh, and you should be accumulating it passively throughout your time in the zone.
| Rep Tier | How to Reach | Key Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Friendly | Questing + Normal Slave Pens (caps here) | Basic faction access |
| Honored | Questing + Normal Underbog (caps here) | Repeatable item turn-ins, crafting recipe access |
| Revered | Questing throughout Outland + Heroic dungeons | Purchase Reservoir Key for Heroic Coilfang dungeons |
| Exalted | Heroic Steamvault farming + Coilfang Armament turn-ins | Best faction gear rewards, Nature Resistance enchants |
The Reservoir Key (sold at Revered for 10g from Fedryen Swiftspear at Cenarion Refuge, coordinates 79.3, 63.7) unlocks Heroic versions of all three Coilfang Reservoir dungeons. You won’t need this while leveling — it becomes relevant at level 70 when you’re farming Heroics for Badge of Justice and pre-raid gear.
Fastest way to build Cenarion Expedition rep while leveling:
- Complete every Zangarmarsh quest — they give rep all the way through the chain
- Run The Slave Pens until Friendly (roughly 1–2 runs)
- Run The Underbog until Honored (roughly 2–3 runs on Normal)
- Collect and turn in Unidentified Plant Parts at the Cenarion Refuge for the Uncatalogued Species repeatable quest (250 rep per turn-in, works up to Honored)
- Push Revered at level 70 through Normal and Heroic Steamvault runs
🎯 Do not dump all your Cenarion Expedition quests at once if you’re trying to optimize rep. Running dungeons first, then doing quests, can sometimes push you more efficiently through rep thresholds. For casual leveling, this doesn’t matter much — just do quests and dungeons as they come.
Notable Quest Rewards in Zangarmarsh
A few items in Zangarmarsh are worth being deliberate about:
| Quest | Notable Reward | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Lost in Action turn-in | Cenarion Ring of Casting | Healers, Casters |
| Lost in Action turn-in | Dark Cloak of the Marsh | Melee DPS, Rogues |
| Stalk the Stalker | Various — check for your class | All roles |
| General questing reward choices | Many leather and mail pieces with solid stats | Druids, Hunters, Shamans |
The quest gear in Zangarmarsh is a solid step up from Hellfire Peninsula rewards, which were already replacing Vanilla epics. Don’t skip the dungeon quest turn-ins specifically — those reward slots you won’t be able to fill easily from questing alone.
When to Leave Zangarmarsh
Move to Terokkar Forest when you’ve:
✅ Reached level 64 (or are comfortably into 63 with XP to spare) ✅ Completed the main Cenarion Refuge, Telredor (Alliance) or Zabra’jin (Horde), and secondary hub quest chains ✅ Run The Slave Pens and The Underbog with Lost in Action complete ✅ Reached at least Honored with Cenarion Expedition from quests and dungeon runs
You don’t need to complete every quest in Zangarmarsh. Some collection quests with poor drop rates or long travel times aren’t worth the time investment compared to the XP waiting for you in Terokkar.
Quick Tips
🌿 Always collect Unidentified Plant Parts — they drop from nearly everything in the zone and the reputation turn-in at Cenarion Refuge is free XP and rep on top of your regular questing.
🎯 The Coilfang Reservoir entrance requires swimming. If your group isn’t sure where to go, swim to the center of Serpent Lake, look for the bubbles, and dive straight down. Follow the pipe and you’ll emerge in the dungeon hub.
⚡ Slave Pens is faster than Underbog — prioritize it for dungeon spam. Underbog gives more rep per run up to Honored, so run it specifically when you need that rep threshold.
✅ Clear the area around Weeder Greenthumb in Slave Pens before speaking to him. He triggers a naga wave that wipes unprepared groups.
⚔️ Don’t kill Claw (the bear) in the Swamplord Musel’ek fight in Underbog before Musel’ek dies. DPS Musel’ek only and let Claw’s health drop naturally from AoE. Killing Claw first fails the Lost in Action quest step.
✅ If mob competition is heavy in Zangarmarsh on launch week, prioritize indoor dungeon time over outdoor farming. The zone is less chaotic than Hellfire but can still get crowded in the first days of the Anniversary launch.
