TBC Classic Gem Cuts Guide | Best Jewelcrafting Cuts for Every Role

Gem cuts are at the heart of Jewelcrafting in TBC Classic Anniversary. Knowing which cuts to learn and use can mean the difference between topping the meters and being the person everyone blames on a wipe. This guide covers every major cut category, which roles they serve, and how to get the designs you need.

How Gem Cuts Work in TBC Classic

Gems in TBC come in six colors: red, yellow, blue, orange, purple, and green. Each color corresponds to specific stats, and each socket in your gear has a matching color requirement. Slotting a gem that matches the socket color activates the item’s socket bonus — which is sometimes worth chasing, sometimes not.

Cuts are learned through:

• Trainers (basic cuts)
• World drops and dungeon loot (Design items)
• Reputation vendors (some of the best cuts in the game)
• The Auction House (design drops traded between players)

You can only learn a cut if you have the Design. This makes certain cuts genuinely rare, especially early in a phase when supply is low and demand is high.

Red Gem Cuts 💎

Red gems socket into red or prismatic sockets. These are your pure offensive stats — the bread and butter for most DPS specs.

The base gem is the Living Ruby (rare quality). In later phases, Crimson Spinel becomes the epic alternative.

🎯 Runed Living Ruby is the single most-sold cut in the game, consistently. If you’re a Jewelcrafter looking to make gold, this one should be one of your first priorities. The design drops from mobs in Shadow Labyrinth and Auchenai Crypts among other places.

Yellow Gem Cuts

Yellow gems go into yellow or prismatic sockets. These lean toward utility stats like hit, haste, and crit.

The base rare gem is the Dawnstone.

⚡ Rigid Dawnstone is one of the most demanded cuts throughout Phase 1 and 2. Hit rating is a hard cap stat — once players know they need it, they buy it immediately. The design is obtainable through Lower City reputation.

Blue Gem Cuts

Blue gems fill blue sockets and focus on defensive and mana-sustain stats.

The base rare gem is the Star of Elune.

For tanks, Solid Star of Elune is the default answer to almost every blue socket — and many red sockets too, when raw survivability is the goal.

Orange, Purple, and Green Gem Cuts (Hybrid Colors)

Hybrid gems satisfy two socket colors at once, which makes them the key to activating socket bonuses without sacrificing your primary stat.

Orange = Red + Yellow socket Purple = Red + Blue socket Green = Yellow + Blue socket

Top Hybrid Cuts

🎯 The real value of hybrid gems is in socket bonus activation. If a piece has a strong socket bonus (like +9 Spell Damage), using a purple gem to hit the blue socket requirement is often a net gain over just socketing pure red.

Meta Gem Cuts 💡

Meta gems are the most impactful gems in the game. They go into a special meta socket — found primarily in head slot items — and provide powerful set bonuses that affect your entire playstyle.

Meta gems require specific conditions to activate, usually a certain number of gems of particular colors in the same item or equipped set.

The Chaotic Skyfire Diamond design requires Transmutation Master Alchemists to craft the raw gem, which means JCs who want to cut it need to either buy the raw gem or partner with an Alchemist friend. It’s still the top meta for most caster DPS roles.

How to Get Gem Cut Designs

This is where the real Jewelcrafting progression lives. Most of the best cuts aren’t from trainers — they require work.

Reputation-Locked Designs

World Drop and Instance Designs

Some of the most valuable cuts — including Runed Living Ruby and Teardrop Living Ruby — drop from mobs throughout Outland. These designs are tradeable, which means they can appear on the Auction House. Prices fluctuate wildly based on supply, especially in Phase 1 when everyone is racing to gear.

Keep a close eye on the AH in the first few weeks. A rare design early in the phase can sell for hundreds of gold — or you can equip it yourself and charge a cutting fee.

⚔️ Physical DPS (Rogue, Hunter, Warrior, Enhancement Shaman)

• Red socket: Delicate Living Ruby (Agility) or Bold (Strength, class-dependent)
• Yellow socket: Rigid Dawnstone if hit-capped, otherwise Gleaming
• Meta: Relentless Earthstorm Diamond

🔥 Caster DPS (Mage, Warlock, Shadow Priest, Elemental Shaman)

• Red socket: Runed Living Ruby (Spell Damage)
• Yellow socket: Veiled Noble Topaz (if needing hit) or Smooth Dawnstone
• Meta: Chaotic Skyfire Diamond

🩹 Healers (Holy Paladin, Resto Shaman, Holy Priest, Resto Druid)

When to Upgrade to Epic Gems

Rare gems (blue quality) are your standard through Phases 1 and 2. Epic gems — Crimson Spinel, Lionseye, Empyrean Sapphire, and others — become available in Phase 3 with Black Temple and Mount Hyjal progression.

Don’t rush to epic gems prematurely. Re-gemming every piece costs a significant amount of gold, and if you’re still upgrading gear frequently, rare cuts are perfectly serviceable. Save the epic gem upgrades for pieces you know you’ll be wearing for a full phase or longer.
