How to Get to Mardum, the Shattered Abyss in WoW — From All Cities

Mardum, the Shattered Abyss is the Demon Hunter starting zone in World of Warcraft — a shattered prison world floating in the Twisting Nether, drenched in fel energy and ruled by the Burning Legion. Unlike most zones, you can’t just fly or portal there from Stormwind or Orgrimmar. Getting to Mardum requires a specific character type or a Legion questline.

This guide covers every available method to reach Mardum from all major cities.

⚠️ Before You Go: Who Can Access Mardum?

Player Type Can Enter? Method
Fresh Demon Hunter character ✅ Yes Automatic — starting zone at character creation
Demon Hunter who completed the intro ✅ Yes Illidari Gateway in Dalaran → Fel Hammer
All other classes ❌ No No access

Only starting Demon Hunters can get to Mardum via a portal opened by Illidan. After the starting zone, the entirety of the zone is completely empty — flying or jumping off the Fel Hammer simply returns the character to the Order Hall.

🎯 In short: Mardum as an explorable zone is only available during the Demon Hunter starting experience. After that, you can reach the Fel Hammer (the Order Hall floating above Mardum), but Mardum itself is no longer accessible.

How to Get to Mardum as a Demon Hunter (Starting Zone)

This is the only way to experience Mardum as a full zone. You don’t travel there — you spawn there.

Create a new Demon Hunter (Night Elf or Blood Elf, level 8 minimum character requirement on your account). The moment you log in, you’re automatically placed inside the Mardum starting scenario — no travel from any city required.

The Demon Hunter class campaign starts automatically when you create a new Demon Hunter, with their own unique route to the Broken Isles as part of their class introductory quests.

Once you complete the full starting questline in Mardum and the Vault of the Wardens, you’ll be sent to Legion Dalaran and cannot return to Mardum as a playable zone.

How to Get to Mardum from Stormwind

  1. Travel to Dalaran (Legion) — use the Stormwind Portal Room portal to Azsuna, then fly to Dalaran
  2. Head to Krasus’ Landing
  3. Glide or fly to Illidari Redoubt — the small floating island just off Krasus’ Landing
  4. Use the Illidari Gateway on the island to teleport to the Fel Hammer over Mardum

⚡ A portal to the Fel Hammer resides on a floating island off Krasus’ Landing in Dalaran. Demon Hunters can glide to the island. If the glide is interrupted or the jump is too short, a felbat will catch the Demon Hunter and drop them on the island.

Non-Demon Hunter Alliance players have no route to Mardum from Stormwind.

How to Get to Mardum from Orgrimmar

Demon Hunters only. Same path as Stormwind, starting from the Horde side:

  1. Travel to Dalaran (Legion) — use the Orgrimmar Portal Room portal to Azsuna, then fly to Dalaran
  2. Head to Krasus’ Landing
  3. Glide or fly to Illidari Redoubt — the small floating island just off the landing
  4. Use the Illidari Gateway to reach the Fel Hammer above Mardum

Non-Demon Hunter Horde players have no route to Mardum from Orgrimmar.

How to Get to Mardum from Dalaran

  3. Look for the small floating island — Illidari Redoubt — just off the edge
  4. Glide off Krasus’ Landing using Glide to land on it, or fly across if you have a flying mount
  5. Click the Illidari Gateway to teleport to the Fel Hammer

FAQ

Can I get to Mardum without playing a Demon Hunter?

How do I get to Mardum from Stormwind or Orgrimmar?

Travel to Legion Dalaran via the Portal Room (Azsuna portal), then head to Krasus’ Landing and glide or fly to Illidari Redoubt — the small floating island nearby. Use the Illidari Gateway there to reach the Fel Hammer above Mardum.

Can I explore Mardum after finishing the Demon Hunter starting zone?

What is the Illidari Gateway and where is it?

The Illidari Gateway is a portal located on Illidari Redoubt, a small floating island just off Krasus’ Landing in Legion Dalaran. Demon Hunters can glide to it or fly across. It teleports directly to the Fel Hammer — the Demon Hunter Order Hall above Mardum. A felbat will catch you if you fall short during the glide.

Do I need the Return to Mardum quest to use the Illidari Gateway?

Yes. The Illidari Gateway in Dalaran becomes available after completing the Return to Mardum quest as part of the Demon Hunter Class Campaign in Legion content.

Is Mardum available in WoW Classic?
