If you’re reading this right before your guild’s first SSC raid night, close the Discord invite, send a “one sec” message, and actually read this page. TBC Classic Anniversary Serpentshrine Cavern doesn’t forgive unpreparedness the way Karazhan does. This is Phase 2’s real entry exam — and the requirements exist for a reason.
Below you’ll find everything: what SSC is, what phase it belongs to, exactly what you need before walking in, and what happens if you don’t bother.
What is Serpentshrine Cavern?
Serpentshrine Cavern (SSC) is a 25-player Tier 5 raid located inside Coilfang Reservoir in Zangarmarsh. It’s one of the two flagship raids of TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 2, opening on May 14, 2026 alongside Tempest Keep: The Eye.
The raid is a naga-controlled stronghold deep beneath Zangarmarsh’s waterways, ruled by Lady Vashj — Illidan’s most loyal lieutenant. Six bosses stand between your raid and the final encounter, each with mechanics strict enough to punish any lack of preparation.
🎯 At a glance:
- Phase: TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 2
- Opened: May 14, 2026
- Raid size: 25 players
- Level requirement: 70
- Location: Coilfang Reservoir, Zangarmarsh (/way 50.5 41.0)
- Bosses: 6 (5 in any order + Lady Vashj last)
- Loot: Tier 5 tokens (Gloves, Legs, Helm), item level 128–141
- Final boss: Lady Vashj
- Required for: Phase 3 attunement (Hyjal Summit)
Where is Serpentshrine Cavern?
SSC is inside Coilfang Reservoir in Zangarmarsh — the same dungeon hub that holds Slave Pens, Underbog, and Steamvault. Head to the large elevated island at the center of the zone (/way 50.5 41.0) and dive into the central pool. The waterfall portal at the bottom leads into the reservoir complex. SSC’s entrance is the large gate on the lower level of the complex.
Getting there by flight:
- Alliance — Flight master Munci in Telredor (/way 61.6 39.6)
- Horde — Flight master Du’ga in Zabra’Jin (/way 61.6 39.6)
Attunement Requirement
On TBC Classic Anniversary servers, attunements are account-wide — do it once on any character and every alt on your Battle.net account walks in automatically. Even so, the quest chain is worth completing for the Hand of A’dal title.
To get The Mark of Vashj:
- Reach Revered with Cenarion Expedition (needed for the Heroic Slave Pens key)
- Enter Heroic Slave Pens, kill Mennu the Betrayer, speak to Skar’this the Heretic in the cage — pick up The Cudgel of Kar’desh
- Kill Gruul the Dragonkiller in Gruul’s Lair — loot the Earthen Signet
- Be Honored with The Violet Eye, summon and kill Nightbane in Karazhan — loot the Blazing Signet
- Return to Heroic Slave Pens and hand in the quest to Skar’this — your Mark of Vashj is applied ✅

Gear Requirements
This is where most guilds come underprepared on their first night.
Item Level Baseline
There’s no enforced gear check at the gate, but the bosses themselves act as your gear check. The raid drops item level 128–141, and you should be bringing gear in that range — or close to it — before you attempt SSC. A full clear of Phase 1 content (Karazhan, Gruul’s Lair, Magtheridon’s Lair) plus crafted epics should have you close.
As a rule of thumb:
- Tanks — aim for roughly 16,000+ HP unbuffed, 490 Defense (uncrittable), and resistance sets for Hydross
- Healers — solid spell healing and mana regen from Phase 1 farm is sufficient for most fights
- DPS — hit-capped (or close), with Phase 1 gear + crafted pieces filling weak slots
Resistance Requirements — Non-Negotiable
Two fights in SSC require specific resistance gear from dedicated players. These aren’t suggestions.
| Boss | Who Needs It | Resistance Required |
|---|---|---|
| Hydross the Unstable | Both tanks | 365 Frost AND 365 Nature (separate sets) |
| Leotheras the Blind | Warlock tank | 365 Fire resistance |
If your Hydross tanks don’t have capped resist sets, the unmitigated elemental damage will kill them instantly — no healer in the game can out-heal it. Same situation for your Warlock tank on Leotheras. Plan your crafting and farming accordingly before your first raid night.

Fishing Requirement
One player in the raid needs at least 300 Fishing skill to pull The Lurker Below. Designate someone before the raid night — it takes one cast.
Consumables Checklist
SSC is long and the fights are demanding. Running short on flasks mid-raid is how your guild loses its collective mind at 11pm.
✅ Required for everyone:
- Flask of Fortification (tanks) or Flask of Blinding Light / Flask of Pure Death (DPS/healers depending on spec)
- Food buffs — Blackened Basilisk, Spicy Hot Talbuk, or equivalent for your stat priority
- Super Mana Potion and Haste Potion for DPS
✅ Situation-specific:
- Elixir of Draenic Wisdom — healers who want extra MP5
- Ironshield Potion — tanks on heavy physical fights
- Nature, Frost, or Fire resistance elixirs — for resist-tanking fights (supplement crafted gear)
Bring more than you think you’ll need. First-night SSC wipes happen, and consumables disappear fast.
Raid Composition Requirements
SSC has stricter comp requirements than Phase 1.
- ✅ At least 1 Warlock who can tank Leotheras’s demon form (with Fire resist set)
- ✅ 2 tanks with dedicated resist sets for Hydross (one Frost set, one Nature set)
- ✅ Strong AoE DPS — Mages, Warlocks, AoE Paladins for Morogrim’s murloc waves
- ✅ 1 player with 300+ Fishing for The Lurker Below pull
- ✅ 4 tanks minimum for Fathom-Lord Karathress (5 recommended as safety)

Before your first SSC pull, run through this list. If you can check every box, you’re ready.

- ✅ At least one designated Warlock tank with Fire resist set
- ✅ At least one player with 300+ Fishing
- ✅ Minimum 4 tanks confirmed (5 preferred for Karathress)
- ✅ Addons installed: DBM or BigWigs, threat meter, raid frames
What SSC Drops
Serpentshrine Cavern drops Tier 5 tokens for three armor slots:
- 🧤 Gloves — Leotheras the Blind, Fathom-Lord Karathress
- 👖 Legs — Hydross the Unstable, Morogrim Tidewalker
- 🪖 Helm — Lady Vashj
Item levels range from 128 on most epic drops up to 133 on Tier 5 tokens and 141 on weapons from Lady Vashj. You’ll need both SSC and Tempest Keep to complete a full Tier 5 set — Chest and Shoulder tokens drop in The Eye.
Beyond set pieces, SSC is packed with high-value off-set gear — weapons, caster items, and strong trinkets that hold up well into Phase 3.

Why SSC Matters Beyond Loot
Killing Lady Vashj drops Vashj’s Vial Remnant — one of two items needed for The Vials of Eternity, the attunement quest for Hyjal Summit in Phase 3. The other item comes from killing Kael’thas Sunstrider in Tempest Keep. Neither boss can be skipped if your guild plans to progress into Phase 3 content, making SSC mandatory progression for the entire TBC Anniversary cycle.
