TBC Classic Anniversary Serpentshrine Cavern Resistance Gear Guide

Two fights in Serpentshrine Cavern are built entirely around resistance gear, not armor. This SSC resistance gear guide covers exactly what your tanks need for Hydross the Unstable‘s Frost and Nature phases and Leotheras the Blind’s Fire-heavy Demon Form, including the crafted sets, target numbers, and where to farm them in TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 2.

If you’re still finalizing your roster, our Best Classes & Comp for SSC guide covers which classes are best suited to wear this gear in the first place.

How the Resistance Cap Works

The resistance cap against Serpentshrine Cavern bosses is 365. Anything beyond that is wasted — gear, enchants, and buffs all count toward the same number, so there’s no reason to overstack a single source.

  • Resistance doesn’t reduce damage by a flat percentage. Each hit rolls between 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% of full damage, and higher resistance shifts the odds toward the lower outcomes.
  • Over a long fight, this averages out to meaningful mitigation, but your tank will still take occasional damage spikes even at the cap.
  • Raid buffs and totems fill part of the gap, so your gear-only target depends on what your raid composition provides.

Frost & Nature Resistance for Hydross the Unstable

Hydross the Unstable deals almost exclusively elemental damage, alternating between a Frost phase and a Nature phase. Two dedicated tanks are required — one geared for Frost, one for Nature — and they swap as the boss changes form.

Iceguard Set (Frost Resistance)

The Frost Resist Hydross set built around the Iceguard pieces is the standard plate option for Warriors and Paladins tanking the Frost phase.

Piece Source
Iceguard Breastplate Blacksmithing, recipe from Koren in Karazhan (Honored, The Violet Eye)
Iceguard Helm Blacksmithing, recipe from Koren (Honored, The Violet Eye)
Iceguard Leggings Blacksmithing, recipe from Koren (Revered, The Violet Eye)
  • Materials: Khorium Bar, Primal Water, Primal Fire — the Breastplate additionally requires a Primal Nether, which only the crafting Blacksmith can obtain
  • This set alone provides roughly 170 Frost Resistance; combined with Frost Resistance Aura or Totem, a main tank reaches the 365 cap comfortably

Wildguard Set (Nature Resistance)

The Hydross Nature Res set built around the Wildguard pieces covers the Nature phase the same way.

Piece Source
Wildguard Breastplate Blacksmithing, recipe from Fedryen Swiftspear (Exalted, Cenarion Expedition)
Wildguard Helm Blacksmithing, recipe from Fedryen Swiftspear (Revered, Cenarion Expedition)
Wildguard Leggings Blacksmithing, recipe from Fedryen Swiftspear (Revered, Cenarion Expedition)
  • Materials: Felsteel Bar, Primal Life, Primal Shadow
  • Feral Druids can off-tank Hydross adds in a pinch but shouldn’t main tank either phase — the Blacksmithing plate sets simply don’t have a leather equivalent strong enough for this fight

✅ Fill remaining slots with Jewelcrafting resistance rings/neck, armor kits, a resistance head glyph, and a shoulder inscription. Inscription of Endurance (+7 to all magic resistances) is purchased from Apprentice Darius in Deadwind Pass at Honored with The Violet Eye.

Fire Resistance for Leotheras the Blind

Leotheras the Blind alternates between Human Form and Demon Form. During Demon Form, his Chaos Blast applies a stacking Fire debuff, so the Demon Form tank needs serious Fire Resistance to survive 12-14 stacks.

  • A geared Warlock is the standard choice for this role, since the Demonology talent Demonic Resilience reduces Fire damage taken by 15% in Demon Form, lowering their gear requirement
  • Warlock gear target: roughly 225 Fire Resistance from gear alone, reaching the 365 cap once Fire Resistance Aura or Totem is active
  • Plate tanks without that talent offset need closer to 295 Fire Resistance from gear to hit the same cap

Gear Sources

Source Notes
Fire-Resist Leotheras gear set Best overall reference list for the encounter
Badge of Justice vendor (Shattrath) Epic Fire Resistance sets for cloth and plate; the min/max favorite since it needs fewer slots and enchants, but costs around 100 Badges
Flameheart set (Tailoring) Blue-quality cloth alternative; patterns sold by Quartermaster Endarin (Aldor) in Shattrath
Phoenix-fire Band Free quest reward from the Phase 2 attunement questline

🎯 Tip: Mixing and matching is fine. A few Badge of Justice pieces plus a couple of crafted items can get you to cap without spending 100 Badges all at once.

Universal Resistance Tools (All Classes)

A handful of resistance sources aren’t tied to a specific armor type and apply no matter which tank or class is wearing them:

  • Jewelcrafting rings and necks with resistance stats — these don’t require breaking your stamina or threat budget
  • Resistance armor kits (Leatherworking) — add a flat resistance bonus to a piece of gear without replacing it
  • Resistance head glyphs and shoulder inscriptions — small but stackable bonuses that fill the last few points to cap

Raid Buffs That Count Toward Resistance

Buff Source Resistance Granted
Aspect of the Wild Hunter +60 Nature Resistance to party within 30 yards
Nature Resistance Totem Shaman Raid-wide Nature Resistance (doesn’t stack with Aspect of the Wild)
Frost Resistance Totem / Aura Shaman / Paladin Raid-wide or party-wide Frost Resistance (don’t stack with each other)
Mark of the Wild (Improved) Druid +25 to all resistances
Fire Resistance Aura / Totem Paladin / Shaman +70 Fire Resistance, don’t stack with each other

✅ Tell your raid leader which buff your resistance tank is relying on before the pull — stacking the wrong combination wastes a buff slot without adding any resistance at all.

Resistance Targets by Role

Role Resistance Type Gear-Only Target Buffed Target
Hydross Main Tank (Frost) Frost ~295 365 (cap)
Hydross Main Tank (Nature) Nature ~295 365 (cap)
Hydross Add Off-Tank Frost or Nature ~167-174 Solid enough for adds only
Leotheras Demon Tank (Warlock) Fire ~225 365 (cap, with Demonic Resilience)
Leotheras Demon Tank (Plate) Fire ~295 365 (cap)

Resistance Gear Tips

  • ✅ Start farming Khorium, Primal Water, Primal Fire, Felsteel, Primal Life, and Primal Shadow before Phase 2 launches — prices spike hard once every guild needs the same materials at once
  • ✅ Reach the required reputation (Violet Eye for Iceguard, Cenarion Expedition for Wildguard) ahead of time so your Blacksmith isn’t blocked on rep when materials are ready
  • ❌ Don’t gear past the 365 cap — every point beyond it is wasted itemization that could’ve gone to stamina or threat stats instead
  • 🎯 Mix Badge of Justice gear with crafted pieces for Fire Resistance if you want to save Badges for other Phase 2 upgrades

FAQ

What is the resistance cap in TBC Classic Anniversary?

The resistance cap against Serpentshrine Cavern bosses is 365. Any resistance beyond that point provides no additional benefit.

What resistance gear do I need for Hydross the Unstable?

You need one tank geared in Frost Resistance for his Frost phase and one tank geared in Nature Resistance for his Nature phase, typically built around the Blacksmithing Iceguard and Wildguard sets.

Who should tank Leotheras the Blind’s Demon Form?

A Warlock is the standard choice because the Demonology talent Demonic Resilience reduces Fire damage taken by 15% in Demon Form, lowering the Fire Resistance needed from gear. A plate tank can also do it with a higher gear-only target.

Can Feral Druids tank Hydross the Unstable?

Feral Druids can off-tank the elemental adds, but they shouldn’t main tank either phase, since the Blacksmithing plate resistance sets that make this fight manageable don’t have a comparably strong leather equivalent.
