TBC Classic Serpentshrine Cavern Attunement Guide — How to Get Mark of Vashj

The TBC Classic Anniversary Serpentshrine Cavern attunement is one of the shorter quest chains in Phase 2 — but shorter doesn’t mean simpler. Most players who get stuck aren’t stuck on the main quest. They’re stuck because they forgot about Nightbane, didn’t realize the Charred Bone Fragment step forces you out of raid group, or walked into Heroic Slave Pens without the Reservoir Key.

This guide walks you through every step in order, including the Nightbane prerequisite chain that trips people up most often. By the end you’ll have The Mark of Vashj applied and SSC unlocked — for every character on your account.

Anniversary Change: Attunement is Account-Wide

Before diving into steps — the most important thing to know about SSC attunement on TBC Classic Anniversary servers is that it’s completely account-wide. Complete the chain once on any character, and every alt on your Battle.net account walks into Serpentshrine Cavern automatically. No repeating the chain, no re-entering heroics, no farming signets a second time.

That said, a huge number of players still run the full chain on their main — the payoff is the Hand of A’dal title, which marks you as someone who completed the old-school attunement circuit before entering SSC. It’s a clean flex that sticks around permanently.

Prerequisites Before You Start

Before picking up the attunement quest, make sure you have these done:

Level 70 — required for all steps ✅ Karazhan attunement complete — you need access to Karazhan for the Nightbane step ✅ Revered with Cenarion Expedition — required for the Reservoir Key to enter Heroic Slave Pens ✅ Honored with The Violet Eye — required to start the Nightbane chain in Karazhan ✅ Revered with Lower City — for access to Heroic Sethekk Halls (Nightbane chain) ✅ Revered with Honor Hold (Alliance) or Thrallmar (Horde) — for access to Heroic Shattered Halls (Nightbane chain)

The Nightbane prerequisites are the part most players underestimate. If you’re early in Phase 1 and haven’t been running Karazhan consistently, reach Honored with The Violet Eye before you plan your attunement night.

Full Attunement Steps — In Order

Step 1 — Enter Heroic Slave Pens and Pick Up the Quest

Head to Coilfang Reservoir in Zangarmarsh (/way 50.5 41.0), enter The Slave Pens on Heroic difficulty (you need the Reservoir Key — requires Revered with Cenarion Expedition).

Fight through to the first boss, Mennu the Betrayer, and kill him. After the boss, drop down the ramp on the left side. Look for Skar’this the Heretic locked in a cage. Speak with him and accept The Cudgel of Kar’desh.

This quest sends you after two items: the Earthen Signet and the Blazing Signet. The next two steps can be done in either order depending on your raid schedule.

🎯 Tip: Don’t leave Heroic Slave Pens without confirming the quest is in your log. It’s easy to walk past Skar’this if your group is rushing through.

Step 2 — Kill Gruul and Loot the Earthen Signet

Head to Gruul’s Lair in Blade’s Edge Mountains and kill Gruul the Dragonkiller. The Earthen Signet drops directly from his corpse — loot it immediately.

This is almost always the easiest part of the attunement chain. If your guild is farming Gruul weekly for Tier 4 tokens, just make sure you have The Cudgel of Kar’desh in your log before the kill. The signet won’t drop for you if you haven’t picked up the quest.

Step 3 — Complete the Nightbane Chain and Loot the Blazing Signet

This is the step that slows people down. Nightbane is an optional Karazhan boss — he doesn’t spawn by default. Someone in your group needs to have completed the Medivh’s Journal quest chain to obtain the Blackened Urn, which is the item used to summon him. Only one player in the raid needs the urn.

Here’s the full Nightbane chain broken down:

3a — Reach Honored with The Violet Eye

Kill bosses and trash inside Karazhan until you hit Honored with The Violet Eye. Once Honored, speak to Archmage Alturus outside Karazhan (/way Deadwind Pass 47 75) and accept Medivh’s Journal.

3b — Find the Journal Inside Karazhan

Enter Karazhan and find Wravien in the Guardian’s Library (past The Curator). He continues the chain. The next quest, The Shade of Aran, requires you to kill Shade of Aran and loot Medivh’s Journal from his corpse.

3c — The Master’s Terrace

Turn in the journal, then complete The Master’s Terrace — head to the Nightbane balcony, read the provided book, witness the roleplay event, and return to Archmage Alturus outside Karazhan.

3d — Digging Up the Past (Solo Step — Leave Your Raid Group First)

Accept Digging Up the Past. This quest requires you to collect a Charred Bone Fragment from outside Karazhan.

⚠️ Critical warning: This step cannot be completed while in a raid group. You must drop the raid before looting the bone fragment, then re-form the group afterward. Missing this detail is one of the most common ways players stall their Nightbane chain mid-night.

3e — A Colleague’s Aid — Fly to Netherstorm

Turn in the bone fragment and accept A Colleague’s Aid. Fly to Area 52 in Netherstorm and speak with Kalynna Lathred. She gives you Kalynna’s Request — requiring two heroic dungeon items:

3f — Receive the Blackened Urn

Bring both books back to Kalynna Lathred. She gives you the final quest: Nightbane, and rewards the Blackened Urn — the permanent item used to summon the boss.

3g — Summon and Kill Nightbane

Return to Karazhan with a raid group. Head to Medivh’s Terrace — the outer balcony near the top of the tower. Use the Blackened Urn to summon Nightbane. Kill him, and loot the Blazing Signet from his corpse. ✅

Step 4 — Return to Heroic Slave Pens and Turn In

With both the Earthen Signet and Blazing Signet in your bags, go back to Heroic Slave Pens. Find Skar’this the Heretic in his cage again and hand in The Cudgel of Kar’desh.

He casts The Mark of Vashj on you. It’s a permanent buff. You are now attuned to Serpentshrine Cavern.

The account-wide unlock applies immediately — every character on your Battle.net account can now enter SSC without repeating the chain.

Quick Summary Checklist

Step Location What You Need

Earthen Signet Gruul’s Lair Quest in your log before the kill
Nightbane chain start Outside Karazhan Honored with The Violet Eye
Shade of Aran kill Karazhan Normal Karazhan access
Charred Bone Fragment Outside Karazhan Drop raid group first
Heroic Sethekk Halls Sethekk Halls (H) Revered with Lower City

Blackened Urn + Nightbane Karazhan (Medivh’s Terrace) Urn in one player’s bag is enough
Turn in quest Heroic Slave Pens Both signets in bags

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Picking up the quest after the Gruul kill. The Earthen Signet won’t drop for you if you didn’t have The Cudgel of Kar’desh in your log before the kill. Always confirm the quest is active first.

Forgetting to drop raid for the bone fragment step. Digging Up the Past literally cannot be completed while you’re in a raid group. Leave the group, grab the fragment, then rejoin. Plan this for a quiet moment — not mid-raid night when everyone’s waiting.

Nobody in the group has a Blackened Urn. Nightbane won’t spawn without it. Only one player needs the urn, but confirm before the raid who has it. Walking to Medivh’s Terrace with 10 people and then realising nobody has the urn is a rite of passage — skip it.

Trying to start the Nightbane chain without Honored Violet Eye. Archmage Alturus won’t offer the questline until you’re Honored. If you’re Friendly, spend another Karazhan night and come back.

Forgetting the heroic reputation requirements for Kalynna’s Request. Heroic Sethekk Halls needs Revered with Lower City. Heroic Shattered Halls needs Revered with Honor Hold or Thrallmar. If you’re missing either, grind the rep before planning your attunement night.

Is It Worth Doing for Alts on Anniversary?

Absolutely — once. Since it’s account-wide, you only complete the chain on your main. Every alt benefits from the same unlock. If you want the Hand of A’dal title on a specific alt, you’d need to run the chain again on that character specifically for the title, but the raid access itself transfers automatically.

For most players in Phase 2, the practical priority is: complete the chain once on your main during the first week of Phase 2 if you haven’t already, and every character you have is immediately SSC-ready.

FAQ

Is SSC attunement required in TBC Classic Anniversary?

The hard gate was removed on Anniversary realms — you can technically enter without completing the attunement. However, completing the chain awards the Hand of A’dal title and unlocks SSC account-wide for every character on your Battle.net account. It’s still worth doing on your main.

Does the Earthen Signet drop for everyone in the raid?

No. The Earthen Signet only drops for players who have The Cudgel of Kar’desh active in their quest log at the time of Gruul’s kill. Pick up the quest from Skar’this the Heretic in Heroic Slave Pens before your Gruul night.

Does everyone need a Blackened Urn to summon Nightbane?

No — only one player in the raid needs the Blackened Urn to summon Nightbane. The Blazing Signet drops from his corpse and can be looted by any player in the raid who is on The Cudgel of Kar’desh quest. Confirm before the raid who is bringing the urn.

Why can’t I complete Digging Up the Past?

This step cannot be completed while in a raid group. Leave your raid, collect the Charred Bone Fragment outside Karazhan, then rejoin the group. It’s one of the most commonly missed details in the Nightbane chain.

What reputation do I need for the Nightbane chain heroics?

Heroic Sethekk Halls requires Revered with Lower City. Heroic Shattered Halls requires Revered with Honor Hold (Alliance) or Thrallmar (Horde). If you’re missing either rep, farm it before planning your attunement.

Do I need to redo the attunement on my alts?

No. Attunements are account-wide on TBC Classic Anniversary servers. Completing the chain on any character unlocks SSC for every character on your Battle.net account. Your alts walk straight in without repeating any steps.

What is the Hand of A’dal title and how do I get it?

Hand of A’dal is a prestige title awarded for completing the full SSC attunement quest chain. On Anniversary servers, attunement is no longer required to enter the raid, but the title is still available for players who complete the chain. It marks you as someone who ran the old-school attunement circuit before stepping into SSC.

How long does the SSC attunement take?

If your guild is already farming Gruul and Karazhan weekly, most of the chain can be completed in a single well-organised weekend. The Nightbane chain is the longest part — factor in one or two heroic dungeon runs for Sethekk Halls and Shattered Halls if you haven’t already cleared those on Heroic.
