TBC Classic Serpentshrine Cavern Guide — SSC Raid Overview, Bosses & Loot (2026)

Serpentshrine Cavern is the raid that separates serious guilds from everyone else. If Karazhan was your warm-up, TBC Classic Anniversary Serpentshrine Cavern is the real exam — six bosses, strict mechanics, resistance gear requirements, and Lady Vashj waiting at the end like a final boss who read all your logs and prepared specifically for your mistakes.

This hub page covers everything you need before your raid team sets foot inside Coilfang Reservoir: how to get in, what to expect from each boss, what loot is up for grabs, and links to every detailed guide we’ve put together for SSC.

What is Serpentshrine Cavern?

Serpentshrine Cavern (commonly called SSC) is a 25-player raid instance located inside Coilfang Reservoir in Zangarmarsh. It’s one of the two flagship Tier 5 raids of TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 2 — the other being Tempest Keep: The Eye. Both opened on May 14, 2026 with the Phase 2 content patch.

Serpentshrine Cavern (SSC) Raid

The raid is set deep beneath Zangarmarsh’s waterways in a naga-controlled stronghold. Lady Vashj, loyal lieutenant of Illidan Stormrage, rules here — and clearing SSC is required to unlock the Phase 3 Hyjal attunement quest, making it mandatory progression no matter how much your guild might wish otherwise.

🎯 Quick facts:

  • Raid size: 25 players
  • Location: Coilfang Reservoir, Zangarmarsh (/way 50.5 41.0)
  • Phase: TBC Anniversary Phase 2 (opened May 14, 2026)
  • Bosses: 6 total (5 in any order, Lady Vashj last)
  • Tier: Tier 5 armor tokens (Gloves, Legs, Helm)
  • Item level: 128+
  • Final boss: Lady Vashj

How to Get to Serpentshrine Cavern

The entrance to SSC is inside Coilfang Reservoir in Zangarmarsh — the same dungeon hub that holds Slave Pens, Underbog, and Steamvault. Head to the large elevated island at the center of the zone (/way 50.5 41.0) and dive into the central pool. The waterfall portal at the bottom takes you directly into the reservoir complex. From there, SSC’s entrance is the large gate on the lower level.

If you’re flying in, use the Alliance flight master Munci in Telredor or the Horde flight master Du’ga in Zabra’Jin to get close.

SSC Attunement — Getting Your Mark of Vashj

To enter Serpentshrine Cavern, you need The Mark of Vashj. On TBC Anniversary servers, attunements are account-wide — complete the chain once on any character and every alt on your Battle.net account walks straight in. Many players still run it for the Hand of A’dal title, which is a nice flex.

The attunement steps:

  1. Be Revered with Cenarion Expedition (needed for the Heroic Slave Pens key)
  2. Enter Heroic Slave Pens, kill Mennu the Betrayer, then speak to Skar’this the Heretic in the cage — pick up The Cudgel of Kar’desh
  3. Kill Gruul the Dragonkiller in Gruul’s Lair — loot the Earthen Signet
  4. Be Honored with The Violet Eye and summon Nightbane in Karazhan — loot the Blazing Signet
  5. Return to Heroic Slave Pens and hand in the quest to Skar’this — your Mark of Vashj is applied and SSC is unlocked ✅

All 6 Bosses in Serpentshrine Cavern

Five of the six bosses can be cleared in any order. Lady Vashj is always last. Most guilds follow this recommended kill order to make progression as smooth as possible:

Hydross the UnstableThe Lurker BelowMorogrim TidewalkerFathom-Lord KarathressLeotheras the BlindLady Vashj

Boss Role Key Mechanic Guide
Hydross the Unstable Water elemental Frost/Nature resist tanks required Guide
The Lurker Below Giant sea creature Requires 300 Fishing to pull Guide
Leotheras the Blind Demon hunter Warlock needs Fire resist; demon phase Guide
Fathom-Lord Karathress Naga warlord Kill 4 adds before main boss Guide
Morogrim Tidewalker Murloc commander Constant murloc waves; heavy AoE Guide
Lady Vashj Final boss 4-phase encounter; coil coordination Guide

Hydross the Unstable

Hydross the Unstable is the first boss most guilds take on, and he’s also the gear check that hits hardest before you even pull. Your tanks must have 365 Frost and Nature resistance — no exceptions. When Hydross crosses the middle of the room, he shifts between Frost and Nature form, and if your tanks aren’t capped, the unmitigated damage will kill them instantly.

This is the fight that will send your tanks farming Living Ruby and Primal Life for weeks.

The Lurker Below

The Lurker Below is one of the more unique encounters in the game — you have to fish him out of his pool using Nat Pagle’s Extreme Angler FC-5000 (or any fishing rod). You need at least 300 Fishing skill, so bring a designated angler if your tanks aren’t leveling rods in their spare time.

The fight itself involves spout mechanics where everyone jumps into the water, plus submerge phases with adds. It’s a coordination check more than a stat check.

Leotheras the Blind

Leotheras the Blind alternates between his Elven and Demon forms. In Demon form, he’s only tankable by a Warlock — and that Warlock needs 365 Fire resistance. At 15% HP, both forms split and engage simultaneously, making the final phase a frantic race.

One player per raid also gets a Demon copy spawned on them during the demon phase — ignore your copy and it kills you. It’s a fight that punishes tunnel vision harder than almost anything else in SSC.

Fathom-Lord Karathress

Fathom-Lord Karathress brings three lieutenants into the fight with him. The key rule: kill the adds first, in the correct order, before you touch Karathress himself — because each add you kill transfers their abilities to the main boss. Mess up the order and you make the encounter significantly harder.

➡️ Fathom-Lord Karathress Guide

Morogrim Tidewalker

Morogrim Tidewalker is a tanking and AoE throughput check. He periodically spawns waves of Murlocs that need to be controlled and burned down fast before they overwhelm healers. He also drops Watery Grave on random raid members, teleporting them into water globules. Your AoE classes will earn their raid spots on this fight.

Lady Vashj

Lady Vashj is the final boss of SSC and one of the most demanding encounters Blizzard designed for TBC. The fight has four distinct phases, including an iconic Phase 2 where the raid must coordinate passing Tainted Cores across the room to deactivate shield generators while juggling multiple add types simultaneously.

Killing Lady Vashj rewards Vashj’s Vial Remnant — one of two items required for the Hyjal Summit attunement quest The Vials of Eternity, gating you into Phase 3 content. She’s the reason your guild exists.

SSC Loot & Tier 5 Overview

Serpentshrine Cavern drops Tier 5 tokens for three armor slots:

  • 🧤 Gloves — from Leotheras the Blind and Fathom-Lord Karathress
  • 👖 Legs — from Hydross the Unstable and Morogrim Tidewalker
  • 🪖 Helm — from Lady Vashj

The remaining Tier 5 tokens (Chest and Shoulders) drop in Tempest Keep. You need both raids to assemble a full set.

Beyond set pieces, SSC drops item level 128+ weapons, caster gear, and off-set epic items. Some of the best pre-Black Temple pieces come out of this instance.

Resistance Gear Requirements

Two bosses in SSC have hard resistance requirements that can’t be ignored:

🛠️ Hydross the Unstable — Main tanks need 365 Frost AND Nature resistance. You’ll want separate tank sets for each form. This means crafted gear, rep rewards, and enchants stacked specifically for this fight.

🛠️ Leotheras the Blind — Your designated Warlock tank needs 365 Fire resistance for the demon phase.

Skipping these requirements isn’t a DPS loss — it’s a guaranteed wipe. Plan your crafting and farming well before your first SSC raid night.

Best Classes & Raid Composition

SSC has some specific comp requirements that don’t exist in Phase 1 raids. A Warlock is mandatory for Leotheras. Strong AoE is needed for Morogrim. And your tank roster needs flexibility to swap resist sets mid-raid.

SSC Trash Guide

The trash in Serpentshrine Cavern is not something you walk through mindlessly. Some packs patrol, some have dangerous AoE, and certain mob types require specific crowd control. Learning the trash pulls is as important as learning the bosses if you want your raid night to end before midnight.

FAQ

When did Serpentshrine Cavern open in TBC Anniversary?

Serpentshrine Cavern opened on May 14, 2026 alongside Tempest Keep: The Eye as part of TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 2, titled Overlords of Outland.

How many bosses does Serpentshrine Cavern have?

SSC has 6 bosses: Hydross the Unstable, The Lurker Below, Leotheras the Blind, Fathom-Lord Karathress, Morogrim Tidewalker, and Lady Vashj. Five can be killed in any order; Lady Vashj must always be last.

Do I need attunement for SSC in TBC Anniversary?

Technically, the hard gate was removed on Anniversary realms — you can enter without completing the chain. However, completing the attunement awards the Hand of A’dal title and is still recommended. More importantly, attunements are account-wide on Anniversary servers, so you only need to do it once across all your characters.

What resistance gear do I need for SSC?

Your tanks need 365 Frost AND Nature resistance for Hydross the Unstable (two separate sets for each phase). Your designated Warlock tank needs 365 Fire resistance for the demon phase of Leotheras the Blind. These are hard requirements — the bosses cannot be healed through without them.

How do I fish out The Lurker Below?

Any player with 300+ Fishing skill can fish him out of the pool in the center of his platform using any fishing rod. It takes one cast. Assign a raid member specifically for this job at the start of the encounter.

Is SSC required for Phase 3 progression?

Yes. Lady Vashj drops Vashj’s Vial Remnant, which is one of two quest items required for The Vials of Eternity — the attunement quest chain for Hyjal Summit in Phase 3. You cannot skip SSC if you want to progress into Mount Hyjal.

What Tier 5 pieces drop in SSC vs Tempest Keep?

SSC drops Tier 5 tokens for Gloves (Leotheras, Karathress), Legs (Hydross, Morogrim), and Helm (Lady Vashj). Chest and Shoulder tokens drop in Tempest Keep. You need both raids for a full Tier 5 set.

Can I do SSC bosses in any order?

Five of the six bosses can be cleared in any order. Lady Vashj always has to be last. The recommended kill order for progression guilds is: Hydross → Lurker → Morogrim → Karathress → Leotheras → Lady Vashj.
