TBC Classic Blade’s Edge Mountains Leveling Guide (65–68) – Anniversary 2026

Blade’s Edge Mountains is the zone that separates the organized levelers from the wanderers. The terrain is a brutal maze of vertical ridges, plunging canyons, and ramps that go nowhere obvious — and that’s exactly why so many players waste hours here while others blast through in record time. The zone has excellent XP and some of the best quest rewards in Outland, but only if you attack it with a plan.

This TBC Classic Blade’s Edge Mountains Leveling Guide covers how to enter Blade’s Edge Mountains efficiently in TBC Classic Anniversary 2026, which hubs to hit and in what order, what to skip, and how to exit the zone at 67–68 ready for Netherstorm or Shadowmoon Valley.

The Golden Rule of Blade’s Edge: Elevation Discipline

Before anything else, understand how this zone works. Blade’s Edge is built on multiple elevation bands — upper ridges, valley floors, and canyon bottoms — connected by winding ramps and narrow passes. The players who hate this zone are the ones who mix objectives from different elevations in the same loop, spending more time riding ramps than killing mobs.

blade's edge mountain map

The rule is simple: complete one elevation band fully before changing levels. Pick up all quests that point in the same direction, finish them, batch turn them in, then move on. Never ride to the valley for one objective and immediately back up for another.

Quick tip: Set your Hearthstone to your faction hub first, then switch to Evergrove once you’re there — it’s the central neutral hub that keeps your mid-zone loops fast.

How to Enter Blade’s Edge Mountains

Both factions approach Blade’s Edge from different directions. Alliance players typically fly from Zangarmarsh to the Orebor Harborage and pick up the breadcrumb quest No Time for Curiosity that leads them into the zone. Horde players come through a cave from Zangarmarsh’s Swamprat Post, with a short spider-killing quest at the entrance before reaching Thunderlord Stronghold.

The zone is accessible at level 65, but 66 is more comfortable. At 65 you’ll notice the mobs hit harder than Nagrand — don’t enter undergeared.

Quest Hubs and Routing

Blade’s Edge has more hubs than it looks like on the map. The key is knowing which ones to prioritize and when to move on.

Alliance: Sylvanaar → Toshley’s Station

Sylvanaar is the Alliance starting point, a night elf outpost in the southern part of the zone. Set your Hearthstone here first. The quests radiate outward in manageable directions — wolves, lynxes, ogres in the Bloodmaul area — and naturally chain into a breadcrumb that sends you northeast to Toshley’s Station.

Toshley’s Station is a gnome outpost and one of the densest quest packages in the entire zone for Alliance. It has a cluster of tool-based quests involving test flights, resonance scanning, and gnomish gadgets. These quests are very fast when executed cleanly as a block. If you fail one of the flight quests repeatedly, skip it and keep moving — the rest of the hub is worth more than one problematic step.

Horde: Thunderlord Stronghold → Mok’Nathal Village

Thunderlord Stronghold is the Horde equivalent of Sylvanaar — set your Hearthstone here on arrival and grab every quest. The chains here involve Bloodmaul and Bladespire ogres in the valley below, which means your first real loop sends you down a ramp to the valley floor. Do not go down and up multiple times for individual objectives. Batch everything you need in the valley, then climb back.

From Thunderlord, follow the chain that takes you to Mok’Nathal Village — Rexxar’s settlement in the middle of the zone. This is one of the best Horde hubs in all of Outland. The quests stack well, the objectives cluster in reachable pockets, and several chains lead directly into the Ruuan Weald area which carries you toward the exit of the zone.

Evergrove and Ruuan Weald (Both Factions)

Evergrove is the neutral mid-zone hub inside Ruuan Weald, a forested area in the center of Blade’s Edge. Both factions converge here for the mid-to-late zone content. Switch your Hearthstone to Evergrove once you arrive — it becomes your logistics base for the rest of the zone.

The Ruuan Weald area has excellent quest density: Wyrmcult camps, Forge Camps, whelp-related chains, and the famous Felsworn Gas Mask quest chain. The Gas Mask quests have a time limit once you equip the mask, so do them as a focused sprint — don’t pick up the mask and then wander off to do something else.

🎯 Pro tip: The Damaged Mask questline (hidden chain) is one of the most rewarding in the zone. Look for the Damaged Mask as a drop while killing mobs — it starts a chain that leads to Evergrove and rewards excellent XP and gear.

Gruul’s Lair: The Raid in Your Leveling Zone

In the northern part of Blade’s Edge Mountains sits Gruul’s Lair, a 25-player raid with no attunement requirement. You simply need to be level 70 and have a group of 25 ready to go. While leveling, you’ll pass through the ogre-filled area outside the raid entrance for several quest objectives — the Massacre at Gruul’s Lair and Showdown chains send you right into that camp.

These quests are group-recommended, and you’ll need help for the Goc encounter specifically. Ask in zone chat — there are usually others on the same step. If you can’t find a group, skip it and come back at 70 with your guild.

What to Skip While Leveling

Blade’s Edge has content that looks tempting but will eat your time for minimal leveling return:

  • Ogri’la — requires level 70 and a flying mount. Don’t attempt this while leveling.
  • Sha’tari Skyguard (Skettis in BEM) — Phase 2 daily content, also requires flying. Save it for 70.
  • Circle of Blood Arena — PvP content, not a leveling priority unless your group specifically wants it.
  • Any quest that sends you across the full zone for a single step — if the next objective is far away in a different elevation band, add it to your next loop, not the current one.

Key rule: When your quests start turning green and travel time per objective increases, leave. Netherstorm and Shadowmoon Valley have better XP density at that point.

Recommended Hub Order

Alliance Horde
1. Sylvanaar (start here, set HS) 1. Thunderlord Stronghold (start here, set HS)
2. Toshley’s Station (dense quest cluster) 2. Mok’Nathal Village (best Horde hub)
3. Evergrove / Ruuan Weald (neutral mid-zone) 3. Evergrove / Ruuan Weald (neutral mid-zone)
4. Exit to Netherstorm or Shadowmoon 4. Exit to Netherstorm or Shadowmoon

Professions and Gathering

Blade’s Edge Mountains has solid gathering for both Herbalists and Miners. Felweed and Dreaming Glory grow throughout the zone, and Fel Iron and Adamantite ore are plentiful in the canyon areas. The terrain makes farming loops awkward, but if you gather while questing along your route, the materials add up fast.

Skinners will find good results from the various drakes, wyverns, and beasts throughout the zone. The drop quality scales with the mobs you’re already killing for quests, so skinning is essentially free gold here.

Quick Tips Before You Leave Blade’s Edge

  • ✅ Set your Hearthstone to your faction hub on arrival, then switch to Evergrove once you reach mid-zone.
  • ✅ Complete one elevation band fully before moving to the next — never mix valley and ridge objectives in the same loop.
  • ✅ Do Toshley’s Station quests as a focused block (Alliance) — they’re fast when executed cleanly.
  • ✅ Follow the Mok’Nathal Village chain fully (Horde) — it unlocks some of the best content in the zone.
  • ✅ Look for the Damaged Mask as a mob drop — it starts a hidden chain with strong rewards.
  • ✅ Ask in chat for help with Massacre at Gruul’s Lair and the Goc encounter.
  • ❌ Don’t attempt Ogri’la or Sha’tari Skyguard while leveling — both require level 70 and flying.
  • ❌ Don’t grind long ramp journeys for single objectives — batch or skip them.
  • ❌ Don’t overstay — exit when quests turn green.

Where to Go Next

From Blade’s Edge, the road east leads directly across the bridge into Netherstorm. Most players transition here at 67–68 for the final push to 70. If you want to pursue raid attunements early, Shadowmoon Valley is also accessible and has some of the strongest pre-raid gear rewards in the game.

FAQ

What level should I start Blade’s Edge Mountains?

Blade’s Edge Mountains is tuned for levels 65–68. You can enter at 65 but 66 is more comfortable — the mobs hit harder than Nagrand. If you’re already 67 or above, you can be selective and focus only on the best hubs rather than trying to clear everything.

Is Blade’s Edge Mountains worth doing or should I skip it?

It’s worth doing if you follow hub order and avoid the terrain traps. The zone has strong XP and excellent quest rewards. The players who hate it are usually the ones bouncing between hubs randomly or mixing objectives from different elevations. Stick to the recommended route and it’s one of the better leveling zones in Outland.

What is the Damaged Mask and how do I find it?

The Damaged Mask is a hidden item that drops from mobs in Blade’s Edge Mountains and starts a secret quest chain. It leads you to Evergrove and rewards solid XP and gear. Keep an eye on your loot while questing — it drops from various mobs in the zone. This chain is one of the hidden gems of Blade’s Edge.

Should I do Ogri’la or Sha’tari Skyguard while leveling?

No. Both systems are level 70 content that requires a flying mount to access efficiently. The initial Ogri’la quest requires level 70, and the Sha’tari Skyguard daily hub in Blade’s Edge is tied to Phase 2 content. Save both for after you hit 70 and have your flying mount.

Does Gruul’s Lair require an attunement?

No. Gruul’s Lair is one of the Phase 1 raids that requires no attunement — just level 70 and a group of 25. While leveling you’ll visit the area outside the raid entrance for quest objectives, but the raid itself is endgame content. There are two bosses inside: High King Maulgar and Gruul the Dragonkiller.

How do I get to Netherstorm from Blade’s Edge Mountains?

Head east from Evergrove and follow the road up and out of the zone. The Gyro-Plank Bridge connects Blade’s Edge to Netherstorm. As you cross the bridge, pick up the quest Off To Area 52 from Netherologist Coppernickels — it’s a free breadcrumb to Netherstorm’s main quest hub.
