TBC Classic Shadowmoon Valley Guide (Horde & Alliance)

Shadowmoon Valley is the final leveling zone in Outland — and honestly, one of the most rewarding ones in all of TBC Classic Anniversary. If you’ve made it here, you’re in the home stretch. This zone is darker, slower-paced, and more story-driven than something like Netherstorm, but what it trades in speed it more than makes up for in quest rewards, endgame setup, and sheer atmosphere. The Black Temple looms in the distance the entire time you’re here — and by the time you leave, you’ll have laid the groundwork for raiding it.

This guide covers everything you need: where to start, how to tackle each hub efficiently, which quest chains are mandatory, and what to do the moment you hit 70.

For a full look at the 60-70 route, check out the TBC Classic 60-70 Leveling Guide or the main TBC Classic Leveling Guide hub.

Zone Overview at a Glance

Detail Info
Level Range 67-70 (68+ recommended)
Zone Type Questing-focused, some group content
Factions Ashtongue Deathsworn, Netherwing, Aldor / Scryer
Key Chains Cipher of Damnation, Akama’s Promise, Netherwing intro
Dungeon None directly in-zone
Endgame Unlock Black Temple attunement, Netherwing dailies

When Should You Go to Shadowmoon Valley?

You can technically enter at level 67, but the bulk of the quests are gated behind level 68. Going in too early means you’ll run into a lot of grey or incomplete quest chains, which wastes time.

The honest recommendation: finish Nagrand first if you’re not at 68 yet. Nagrand has excellent quest density and is forgiving to navigate. Once you’re 68 and heading into the final push, come to Shadowmoon Valley — or alternate with Netherstorm if you want faster, more compact questing.

The two zones together give far more XP than you need to hit 70, so don’t worry about “running out” of content.

Starting Your Journey

Alliance — Wildhammer Stronghold

When you enter Shadowmoon Valley from the northwest road, you’ll see Wildhammer Stronghold relatively quickly. This is your starting base for Alliance players. The moment you arrive:

  • Accept every quest inside the Stronghold
  • Grab the flight path — this is important, the zone is massive
  • Set your Hearthstone here

Your first quest loop takes you north toward the Altar of Damnation and west into Legion Hold. These early quests introduce you to the zone’s story and get you moving through the core areas. Complete everything in a given area before moving on — backtracking in Shadowmoon Valley is expensive in travel time.

Horde — Shadowmoon Village

Horde players head to Shadowmoon Village as their central hub. It works almost identically — flying trainer is here, quests fan out in every direction, and it serves as your return point between loops. If you hit 70 while still in Shadowmoon Village, you can buy your flying mount immediately, which is a nice bonus.

From the village, Horde players typically move toward Slag Watch near The Deathforge next, focusing on disrupting Shadow Council operations before heading into the faction-specific content further east.

Aldor vs Scryer in Shadowmoon Valley

Your choice between Aldor and Scryer matters here more than in any other zone. Both factions have a dedicated base in Shadowmoon Valley and offer overlapping — but differently named — quest chains that lead toward Black Temple lore and attunement prep.

Faction Base in Shadowmoon Key Quests
Aldor Altar of Sha’tar Tablets of Baa’ri, The Ashtongue Tribe, Reclaiming Holy Grounds
Scryer Sanctum of the Stars Tablets of Baa’ri, The Ashtongue Broken, The Great Retribution

Both paths send you into the Ruins of Baa’ri and to the outer gates of the Black Temple. The quests reward the same experience and comparable gear — the only real difference is which NPCs hand them to you and the faction reputation you build. Pick up every quest from your alignment’s base and treat it as a third hub alongside your faction’s main town.

🎯 Tip: If you haven’t decided on Aldor or Scryer yet, Shadowmoon Valley is where that choice starts to matter for raiding. Both paths lead to the Akama chain and eventually Black Temple attunement, so don’t stress — just commit to one.

The Cipher of Damnation Quest Chain

This is the most important quest chain in the entire zone, and arguably one of the most important in all of TBC Classic. The Cipher of Damnation is a long, multi-branch chain that starts at Oronok’s Farm with Oronok Torn-heart.

The chain splits into three separate arcs, each tracking down one of Oronok’s sons:

  • Grom’tor — sends you northwest near Coilskar Point
  • Ar’tor — takes you east to Illidari Point
  • Borak — sends you to the Sketh’lon Base Camp

Each branch ends with collecting a Fragment of Damnation. Once all three are gathered, you return to Oronok and complete the final ritual at the Altar of Damnation, summoning and defeating Cyrukh the Firelord.

⚔️ Why this chain matters beyond the XP: Completing it rewards a fire resist necklace and your choice of weapon, and more importantly, it triggers a letter from Khadgar that sends you to A’dal in Shattrath. That’s the gateway to the Trials of the Naaru — which are part of the attunement chain for Tempest Keep: The Eye and Mount Hyjal.

Do this chain while you’re leveling. Coming back at 70 to do it separately is a waste of time.

🎯 Tip: Do all three branches as a batch. Zigzagging between them mid-chain costs you a lot of riding time in a zone that doesn’t forgive poor pathing.

The Akama and Ashtongue Chain

After completing your Aldor or Scryer quests in the Ruins of Baa’ri and around the Black Temple’s outer walls, you’ll eventually unlock the Warden’s Cage chain. This introduces Akama and begins the long storyline that ties directly into Black Temple access.

The specific steps you can do while leveling (the in-zone portion):

  • Tablets of Baa’ri in the Ruins of Baa’ri
  • Karabor Training Grounds inside the Black Temple’s outer courtyard
  • A Necessary Distraction / The Great Retribution at the Ata’mal Terrace

The full Black Temple attunement continues beyond Shadowmoon Valley and requires Level 70, completion of The Arcatraz attunement, and progression into actual raids — but laying the groundwork here while questing saves a lot of hassle later.

Netherwing Ledge — Start It Early

In the southeast corner of Shadowmoon Valley sits the Netherwing Fields, and somewhere in there you’ll find an NPC named Mordenai. Talk to him and pick up Kindness — this begins the introductory Netherwing chain.

The Netherwing reputation grind is completely separate from leveling. The daily quest hub doesn’t unlock until you’re 70 and have epic flying (Artisan riding). But starting Kindness while you’re already in the area takes five minutes and technically advances you from Hated toward Neutral with the faction before the grind even begins.

More importantly, while you’re passing through Netherwing Fields anyway, keep an eye out for Netherwing Eggs on the ground. They’re a bonus reputation item that you can hand in later. Picking them up passively as you travel costs you nothing.

🎯 Tip: Don’t detour significantly for eggs while leveling. Just grab them if they’re already on your path. The egg grind becomes relevant at 70, not now.

Tips for Leveling Efficiently Here

Shadowmoon Valley has a reputation for being slow, and it deserves it. The zone is geographically large, with long ridges and hostile roads separating quest areas. A few things that help:

  • Commit to one hub at a time. Stack your quest log pointing in a single direction before you move. The “grab a few from everywhere and figure it out” approach costs enormous travel time here.
  • Batch your Cipher of Damnation. All three son-arcs can be worked in a logical loop. Don’t jump between them halfway through.
  • Park your Hearthstone well. While doing attunement or Aldor/Scryer quests, hearth near your faction base in Shadowmoon rather than back at your main hub.
  • Don’t skip the Aldor/Scryer base quests. These reward solid experience and build reputation you’ll want before entering heroics.

What Happens After You Hit 70

If you ding 70 mid-zone, great news — every remaining quest becomes pure gold income. Shadowmoon Valley has some of the best-paying quest turn-ins in Outland, and the gear rewards from the final group chains are strong enough to replace most vanilla raid gear.

Your immediate post-70 priorities in Shadowmoon:

  • Turn in all remaining quests for gold
  • Begin Netherwing daily preparation (requires epic flying, so farm gold first)
  • Continue the Akama / Ashtongue chain toward Black Temple attunement
  • Unlock the Netherwing daily hub once you have Artisan riding

Frequently Asked Questions

What level do I need to start Shadowmoon Valley?

You can enter at level 67, but most quests require level 68. It’s best to wait until 68 before spending significant time here to avoid running into locked or incomplete quest chains.

Is Shadowmoon Valley or Netherstorm faster for leveling?

Netherstorm is generally faster. The quests are more compact and travel time is lower. Shadowmoon Valley is slower-paced but rewards you with stronger gear, better endgame setup, and key attunement chain steps. Doing both gives more than enough XP to reach 70.

Do I need to pick Aldor or Scryer before coming to Shadowmoon Valley?

Yes, you should have already chosen before arriving. Both factions have a dedicated base in the zone with unique quests. If you haven’t declared yet, go to Shattrath City and make your choice first — otherwise you’ll miss a significant portion of Shadowmoon Valley’s quests.

Is the Cipher of Damnation mandatory?

Not for leveling, but it is extremely important for endgame. Completing it unlocks the Trials of the Naaru quest line, which is part of the attunement chain for The Eye raid in Tempest Keep. Doing it while leveling saves a lot of extra trips later.

Can I start Netherwing while leveling?

You can pick up the introductory quest (Kindness from Mordenai) while questing in the area, but the actual Netherwing daily hub and reputation grind require level 70 and Artisan riding skill. Start the intro chain early to save a small amount of time, but don’t go out of your way for it while still leveling.

Are there any dungeons in Shadowmoon Valley?

There are no dungeons physically located inside Shadowmoon Valley. However, some quest chains in the zone (like the Forged Illidari-Bane Blade chain) send you into dungeons elsewhere, such as The Mechanar, Shadow Labyrinth, Shattered Halls, and The Steamvault.
