Leotheras the Blind is the third boss of the Serpentshrine Cavern raid in TBC Classic Anniversary, and he’s unlike anything else your raid will have fought up to this point. Rather than a single set of abilities, Leotheras alternates between two completely different forms — a melee-focused Human Form and a ranged caster Demon Form — each requiring a different tank and a different set of reactions from the raid. On top of that, the fight forces individual players to confront and kill a copy of themselves before it takes over their mind.
This guide breaks down both forms, the chaotic split phase at low health, and everything Leotheras drops.
Who Is Leotheras the Blind? Quick Lore
Leotheras the Blind is a fallen Night Elf warden corrupted by demonic influence, fought in a room that must be fully cleared of trash before the pull. What makes this encounter unique is the constant form-switching: Leotheras spends roughly 45 seconds in Human Form, then transitions to Demon Form, and back again, with threat completely wiped every time he changes shape. Because of this, most raids bring a dedicated Warlock tank to handle the Demon Form phase, since Warlocks can mitigate magic damage and build threat quickly with Searing Pain.
Before attempting this fight, make sure your raid has cleared the SSC attunement requirements and meets the recommended gear check outlined in our SSC overview guide.
Leotheras the Blind Abilities
- Whirlwind — Used only in Human Form. Leotheras spins toward random raid members, dealing heavy damage to anyone hit and applying a damage-over-time effect. Threat is completely wiped the moment the cast ends.
- Chaos Blast — Used only in Demon Form. A large burst of Fire damage dealt to Leotheras’ current highest-threat target.
- Insidious Whisper — Cast during Demon Form on five random players, each spawning a copy of themselves that only that player can see or attack. The copy must be killed quickly, or the original player becomes permanently mind-controlled and has to be killed by the raid instead.
Strategy for Leotheras the Blind
Pulling the Boss
Clear every trash pack in the room before engaging. Leotheras’ unpredictable movement during Whirlwind can easily drag the fight into nearby trash if the room isn’t fully cleared first. Decide on your Demon Form tank ahead of time — a Warlock with strong Fire Resistance gear is the standard choice, since their talents let them shrug off a large portion of Chaos Blast damage.
Human Phase
Leotheras opens the fight in Human Form, where Whirlwind is his only ability. The raid should spread out before the cast and spread further once it begins, since anyone hit takes serious damage plus a lingering DoT. Because threat resets completely when Whirlwind ends, ranged DPS can go all-out during this window without fear of pulling aggro — just be ready to throttle back the instant the cast finishes so your tank can re-establish threat. Hunters can speed this up by using Misdirection right as Whirlwind ends.
Demon Phase
After about 45 seconds, Leotheras shifts into Demon Form and threat resets again. This is when your Warlock tank steps in, since their resistance to magic damage makes them far more durable against Chaos Blast than a conventional tank. Give the Warlock a few seconds to build threat before the raid opens up.
During this phase, five players are hit with Insidious Whisper and each spawns a personal copy of themselves. Only the targeted player can see or damage their own copy, so each of them needs to kill it fast — pooling personal cooldowns if needed. Letting the timer run out turns that player into a mind-controlled enemy the rest of the raid has to put down.
Split Phase (Sub-15% Health)
Once Leotheras drops to 15% health, he splits into two separate entities: the original stays in Human Form at 15% HP, while a brand-new Demon Form copy spawns at full health. Both must be managed simultaneously — the raid keeps focusing the low-health Human Form while the Warlock tank picks up threat on the fresh Demon spawn. Every ability is active at once during this stretch, so save raid cooldowns for this final burn.
Role-Specific Tips
Tanks: Expect a full threat wipe at every form change, roughly every 45 seconds. Keep your strongest threat-generating abilities ready for the moment Whirlwind ends or Demon Form begins. If you’re the designated Warlock tank, give yourself a short buffer before expecting to hold aggro reliably.
Healers: Track the Whirlwind debuff on your raid frames so you can spot-heal anyone caught by it. Pre-assign a healer specifically to the Warlock tank during Demon Form, since their damage intake looks very different from a normal tank’s.
DPS: During Whirlwind, back off and let threat reset rather than trying to squeeze in extra damage. If you’re hit by Insidious Whisper, drop what you’re doing and kill your Inner Demon immediately — this isn’t optional, and a missed kill creates a dangerous mind-controlled player for the rest of the raid to handle.
