TBC Classic Tempest Keep Attunement Guide | Burning Crusade 2026

Getting attuned for Tempest Keep (The Eye) is a long road, but it’s also one of the most rewarding questlines in TBC Classic Anniversary 2026 — it tells a genuinely good story in Shadowmoon Valley before sending you through four Heroic dungeons. This guide walks through every step, from your very first quest with Oronok Torn-heart to the moment A’dal hands you the Tempest Key.

Remember: attunement in TBC Classic Anniversary is account-wide, so this only needs to be done once per account, not once per character.

📋 Attunement Chain Overview

Stage What You’re Doing Location
1. Cipher of Damnation Long Shadowmoon Valley questline with Oronok Torn-heart Shadowmoon Valley
2. Trial of the Naaru: Mercy Clear Heroic Shattered Halls Hellfire Citadel
3. Trial of the Naaru: Strength Clear Heroic Steamvault + Heroic Shadow Labyrinth Coilfang Reservoir / Auchindoun
4. Trial of the Naaru: Tenacity Clear Heroic The Arcatraz Tempest Keep
5. Trial of the Naaru: Magtheridon Defeat Magtheridon Hellfire Citadel
6. Receive the Tempest Key Return to A’dal in Shattrath Shattrath City

Step 1: The Cipher of Damnation

Everything begins in Shadowmoon Valley. Horde players pick up The Hand of Gul’dan from Earthmender Splinthoof in Shadowmoon Village, while Alliance players get the same quest from Earthmender Sophurus at Wildhammer Stronghold. This kicks off a long quest chain — one of the lengthiest in TBC — that ties together the lore of the valley’s shattering.

After a series of elemental spirit quests with Earthmender Torlok (Enraged Spirits of Fire and Earth, then Water, then Air), you’ll be sent north to meet Oronok Torn-heart at his farm. Oronok tests you before revealing that you need to find his three sons and recover the three fragments of the Cipher of Damnation. From here, the questline splits into three branches.

The Three Fragment Branches

You can complete these three branches in any order:

  • Grom’tor, Son of Oronok — The shortest of the three branches, ending with the recovery of the first fragment
  • Ar’tor, Son of Oronok — Includes a memorable side-quest involving Lohn’goron, Bow of the Torn-heart
  • Borak, Son of Oronok — The most involved branch, requiring a Blood Elf disguise, an infiltration quest, and a group kill on Ruul the Darkener near Dragonmaw Fortress to claim the third fragment

🎯 Tip: The Borak branch needs a group for the Ruul the Darkener kill, so plan around when friends or guildmates are online rather than trying to solo it.

Reassembling the Cipher

Once all three fragments are recovered, return them to Oronok. He sends you to use the completed Cipher of Damnation at the Altar of Damnation, where you’ll summon and need to defeat Cyrukh the Firelord. This fight requires a small group — a tank, healer, and a few DPS will do — and Oronok and his sons join in to help during the encounter.

Defeating Cyrukh completes the Cipher of Damnation chain. From here, Khadgar sends you a letter directing you to Shattrath City, where the real attunement work with A’dal begins.

Step 2: Trial of the Naaru — Mercy

At Shattrath City, A’dal offers Trial of the Naaru: Mercy. This sends you into Heroic Shattered Halls in Hellfire Citadel, where you need to retrieve the Unused Axe of the Executioner — and importantly, all three bosses in the instance must be killed first.

  • ✅ Clear Heroic Shattered Halls (all three bosses)
  • ✅ Loot the Unused Axe of the Executioner
  • ✅ Return to A’dal

Step 3: Trial of the Naaru — Strength

This trial is split into two separate Heroic dungeon runs:

  • 🏹 Kill Warlord Kalithresh in Heroic Steamvault (Coilfang Reservoir) and loot Kalithresh’s Trident
  • 🏹 Kill Murmur in Heroic Shadow Labyrinth (Auchindoun) and loot Murmur’s Essence

Both items are required before A’dal will consider the trial complete — you can do these in either order, but both dungeons must be run on Heroic difficulty.

Step 4: Trial of the Naaru — Tenacity

For this trial, you’ll head into Heroic The Arcatraz, one of the dungeons housed within Tempest Keep itself. During the fight against the final boss, Harbinger Skyriss, a gnome named Millhouse Manastorm is released from a stasis chamber partway through the encounter.

🎯 Important: Millhouse must survive the entire fight. If he dies before Harbinger Skyriss does, you won’t get credit for the quest and will need to repeat the run.

Step 5: Trial of the Naaru — Magtheridon

The final trial sends you to Magtheridon’s Lair to defeat Magtheridon himself, a 25-player raid boss. This is the only trial that requires a full raid rather than a five-player group, so make sure your guild has a Magtheridon’s Lair clear scheduled before you start counting on this step.

If your raid hasn’t downed Magtheridon yet, this is a good opportunity to fold the kill into your regular Phase 1 raid night rather than treating it as a separate attunement chore.

Step 6: Claiming the Tempest Key

Once all four Trials of the Naaru are complete, return to A’dal in Shattrath City one final time. He’ll reward you with:

  • 🗝️ The Tempest Key — grants account-wide access to Tempest Keep: The Eye
  • 💍 Phoenix-fire Band — a ring reward for completing the chain

At this point, your attunement is finished. You and every other character on your account can now queue into The Eye whenever your raid is ready. If you haven’t already reviewed the raid’s level and gear expectations, check our Tempest Keep Overview & Requirements guide before your first pull.

Reputation You’ll Need Along the Way

Since three of the four trials require Heroic dungeons, make sure you’ve built up reputation ahead of time:

Faction Unlocks Heroic For
Honor Hold / Thrallmar Shattered Halls
Cenarion Expedition Steamvault
The Sha’tar Shadow Labyrinth
Lower City The Arcatraz

✅/❌ Do: grind these reps before starting the Trials. Don’t: wait until you’re mid-questline to discover you’re locked out of a Heroic key.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tempest Keep attunement account-wide or per character?

It’s account-wide. Once one character on your account completes the full chain and receives the Tempest Key, every other character you play can enter The Eye without redoing the questline.

Which dungeons do I need to clear for Tempest Keep attunement?

You need Heroic Shattered Halls, Heroic Steamvault, Heroic Shadow Labyrinth, and Heroic The Arcatraz, plus a raid kill on Magtheridon in Magtheridon’s Lair.

What happens if Millhouse Manastorm dies during Trial of the Naaru: Tenacity?

If Millhouse dies before Harbinger Skyriss is defeated, you won’t receive quest credit and will need to repeat the Heroic Arcatraz run.

Can I complete the three Cipher of Damnation fragment branches in any order?

Yes. The branches tied to Oronok’s three sons — Grom’tor, Ar’tor, and Borak — can be completed in whichever order you prefer.

Do I need a raid for any part of the attunement chain?

Yes, for two parts: defeating Cyrukh the Firelord requires a small group, and Trial of the Naaru: Magtheridon requires a full 25-player raid to kill Magtheridon.
