Getting WoW Classic running on your PC takes less than 20 minutes if you follow the right steps. This guide walks you through creating a Battle.net account, downloading the client, and picking the right Classic version to play — whether that’s Classic Era, Hardcore, or Season of Discovery.

System Requirements for WoW Classic
Before downloading, confirm your PC meets the minimum specs. WoW Classic is far less demanding than Retail WoW, so most machines from the last decade will run it fine.
Minimum requirements:
- OS: Windows 10 64-bit (latest Service Pack)
- Processor: Intel Core i5 or AMD FX-8100
- Memory: 4 GB RAM
- Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 or AMD Radeon HD 4850
- Storage: At least 70 GB free space
- Internet: Broadband connection
Recommended for smoother performance:
- Processor: Intel Core i7-4770 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X
- Memory: 8 GB RAM or more
- Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 or AMD Radeon HD 7950
- Storage: SSD strongly recommended for faster load screens
Step 1: Create or Log In to Your Battle.net Account
WoW Classic runs through Blizzard’s Battle.net platform, so you’ll need an account before anything else.
- Go to Blizzard’s official Battle.net website.
- Click Sign Up if you’re new, or Log In if you already have an account.
- Verify your email address when prompted.
- Enable two-factor authentication (Battle.net Authenticator) — this isn’t required, but it’s strongly recommended to protect your account from compromise.
Step 2: Download the Battle.net Desktop App
The Battle.net App is the launcher that manages downloading, patching, and starting the game.
- From the Battle.net website, click Download in the top-right corner.
- Run the installer file once it finishes downloading.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to install the app to your system drive.
- Log in with your Battle.net credentials once installation completes.
Step 3: Install World of Warcraft Classic
Once you’re logged into the Battle.net App:
- Click on Games in the left sidebar.
- Select World of Warcraft from the list of Blizzard titles.
- Click Install, then choose your installation folder (an SSD is ideal if you have one).
- Click Install again to begin downloading game files. This can take anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour depending on your connection speed.
- Once the initial download reaches a playable threshold, the Play button will activate — you can start playing while the rest downloads in the background.
Step 4: Choosing Your Classic Version
WoW Classic isn’t a single game anymore — Blizzard now offers several distinct Classic experiences under the same installation. Before hitting Play, use the version dropdown menu (next to the Play button) to pick the right one:
- WoW Classic Era — the original vanilla experience, frozen at launch-era content.
- Season of Discovery — a seasonal ruleset with runes, phased content, and new abilities layered onto Classic. See our Season of Discovery download and install guide for season-specific setup notes.
- Hardcore — permadeath rules on dedicated Hardcore realms. Our Hardcore Classic installation guide covers the extra steps for character creation on these realms.
All three currently share the same client download, so you don’t need to install anything separately — just select the correct version from the dropdown before clicking Play.
Step 5: Launching and Creating Your Character
- Click Play from the Battle.net App.
- At the character selection screen, click Create Character.
- Choose your realm — pick a PvE (normal), PvP, or Hardcore realm depending on your preferred version.
- Select your race, class, and customize your character’s appearance.
- Click Enter World to begin.
New to Classic and not sure where to start? Your starting zone and early quests are determined by your race — for example, Humans begin in Elwynn Forest while Orcs begin in Durotar.
Troubleshooting Common Installation Issues
If you run into problems during download or launch, try these fixes first:
- Stuck download / “Waiting for another process”: Close and restart the Battle.net App, or restart your PC.
- Slow download speeds: Open Battle.net App settings and check that a download region close to you is selected, and that no bandwidth cap is set.
- Game won’t launch: Right-click World of Warcraft in your Battle.net App library and select Scan and Repair to check for corrupted files.
- Login errors: Confirm your Battle.net credentials are correct and check Blizzard’s server status page for outages.
- Antivirus blocking the client: Add the WoW installation folder as an exception in your antivirus software.
Installing on Other Operating Systems
Not running Windows? The installation process differs slightly depending on your platform:
- If you’re on a Mac, follow our dedicated WoW installation guide for macOS for Apple-specific setup steps.
- If you’re running Linux, see our guide to installing WoW on Linux, which covers Wine/Proton configuration since there’s no native Linux client.
