Hardcore Classic runs the original vanilla ruleset with one major change: if your character dies, that’s it — permanent death, no resurrection, and the character is locked out forever. It installs as its own version inside the WoW Classic client. Here’s the full setup.
What You’ll Need Before You Start
- A Battle.net account with an active WoW subscription or game time.
- Around 30-40GB of free drive space.
- The Battle.net app installed and up to date.
- A check of the official WoW system requirements page if it’s been a while since you last played.
Step 1: Set Up Battle.net
New players should register at the Battle.net account sign-up page and download the Battle.net app before anything else. Returning players can log straight into their existing account.
Step 2: Install the Hardcore Classic Client
- Open the Battle.net app and click the Games tab.
- Select WoW Classic from your game list.
- Use the version dropdown near the Play button and switch to Hardcore.
- Click Install and let the client patch or download.
If you already have any version of Classic installed, this patches your existing files rather than pulling down a full new client.
Step 3: Understand the Permadeath Rules
Hardcore’s core rule is simple but unforgiving: character death is permanent. Once your character dies, it’s flagged and can never be played again, though you can move it to a normal Classic realm afterward to keep it as a memorial. Deaths from any source count — combat, fall damage, environmental hazards, disconnects included — so there’s no “safe” way to die.
Step 4: First Launch Checklist
- New characters only: Hardcore runs on dedicated realms, so you’ll be creating new characters rather than transferring existing Classic ones.
- Addons: Hardcore Classic uses its own separate AddOns folder, so anything you relied on before needs to be reinstalled here.
- Death tracking: Blizzard’s official Hardcore leaderboard and death log track every character publicly, so be aware your run is visible if you’re playing on official Hardcore realms.

Troubleshooting Common Install Issues
The most common Hardcore install issue is the version dropdown reverting to a different Classic client after a patch — always double-check it before clicking Play, since accidentally logging into the wrong version could be confusing mid-run. For login or patching problems beyond that, the official WoW support page covers known fixes, and the official WoW website has current server status.
