Retail is the current, ongoing version of World of Warcraft — the latest expansion, live seasons, and the servers most new and returning players land on by default. Getting it installed takes about ten minutes of clicking plus however long the download itself takes, and this guide walks through every step.
What You’ll Need Before You Start
- A free Battle.net account (or an existing one from another Blizzard game).
- An active WoW subscription or game time once you’re past the trial cap.
- At least 100GB of free drive space — check the official WoW system requirements page to confirm your PC can run it comfortably.
- A stable internet connection; the initial download is large even with Blizzard’s background-downloading system.
Step 1: Create or Log Into Your Battle.net Account
Everything starts with your Battle.net account, since it’s what ties your purchase, subscription, and characters together. If you don’t already have one, head to the Battle.net account sign-up page and register with an email and password. If you’ve played Overwatch, Diablo, or any other Blizzard title before, you already have an account and can skip straight to logging in.
Step 2: Download the Battle.net App
WoW installs through the Battle.net desktop app, not a standalone installer. Grab it from the official Battle.net app download page, run the installer, and log in with the account you just created.
Step 3: Install World of Warcraft
Once you’re logged into the Battle.net app:
- Click the Games tab in the left sidebar and select World of Warcraft.
- Click Install and choose a drive with enough free space — an SSD is strongly recommended for load times.
- Pick your install region and language if prompted.
- Click Install again to begin downloading.
Blizzard uses a streaming installer, so you can usually launch the game and start playing the starting zones once a small percentage has downloaded, while the rest continues in the background.
Step 4: First Launch Settings
When you launch WoW for the first time, take a minute to check a few settings before diving in:
- Graphics: Blizzard auto-detects a reasonable preset, but it’s worth manually lowering shadow and view-distance settings on older hardware.
- Voice chat: In-game voice is on by default; disable it in Options if you don’t plan to use it.
- Addons folder: If you plan to use addons like WeakAuras or Details, note your install path now (usually
World of Warcraft\_retail_\Interface\AddOns) since you’ll need it later.
From here, character creation drops you into the current expansion’s starting experience, and you’re ready to play.
Playing on Mac or Linux?
The steps above assume a standard Windows install through the Battle.net app. If you’re on different hardware, the process has a few extra steps:
Want a Different Version of WoW?
Retail isn’t the only way to play. Blizzard also runs a full lineup of Classic progression realms and specialty rulesets, each with its own separate install inside Battle.net:

Troubleshooting Common Install Issues
Most install problems come down to a handful of repeat offenders: a stuck download, a “disc read error” on an otherwise fine connection, or the client refusing to launch after patching. Before reinstalling from scratch, check the official WoW technical support page, which covers fixes for most patching and login errors. You can also confirm you’re downloading the correct build for your region on the official World of Warcraft website.
