Wrath of the Lich King Classic brings back Northrend, the Death Knight hero class, and the dungeon-and-raid structure a lot of players consider the peak of Classic-era WoW. Like TBC before it, WotLK installs as a version switch inside the existing Classic client rather than a brand new download. Here’s the full setup.
What You’ll Need Before You Start
- A Battle.net account with an active WoW subscription or game time.
- Around 40-50GB of free drive space.
- The Battle.net app installed and updated to the latest version.
- A look at the official WoW system requirements page if you haven’t checked your PC recently.
Step 1: Set Up Battle.net
New players need to register at the Battle.net account sign-up page and install the Battle.net app before anything else. Returning players can skip straight to logging in with their existing account.
Step 2: Install the WotLK Classic Client
- Open the Battle.net app and go to the Games tab.
- Select WoW Classic from your game list.
- Use the version dropdown near the Play button to switch to Wrath of the Lich King Classic.
- Click Install and let the client patch or download.
If you already have Classic or TBC Classic installed, this patches your existing files forward instead of pulling down a full new client, so it’s usually a quick update rather than a fresh install.
Step 3: Try the Death Knight Hero Class
WotLK’s headline feature is the Death Knight, the game’s first hero class. Any character on your account that’s already reached the required level can create one, and it starts at a higher level than a normal class through its own dedicated starting questline in Acherus.
Step 4: First Launch Checklist
- Character carryover: Existing Classic and TBC characters move forward automatically once you switch to the WotLK client — no extra steps needed.
- Addons: WotLK Classic uses its own AddOns folder, separate from Retail, vanilla Classic, and TBC Classic, so anything you relied on before needs to be reinstalled here.
- Northrend travel: Once you hit level 68, check your class trainer or the mailbox for the quest that sends you to Borean Tundra or Howling Fjord to begin the Northrend storyline.
Playing on Mac or Linux?
The install flow above is the same across platforms, but the base Battle.net setup looks a little different if you’re not on Windows:

Troubleshooting Common Install Issues
The most common WotLK Classic issue is the version dropdown reverting after a patch, causing you to launch into the wrong client by mistake — always double-check it before clicking Play. For deeper login or patching problems, the official WoW support page covers known fixes, and the official WoW website has current server status.
