Silvermoon City has lived two very different lives. In TBC Classic, it’s the proud but somewhat isolated capital of the Blood Elves, tucked away in the far northeast corner of the Eastern Kingdoms. In current Retail, following the Midnight expansion, it’s been completely rebuilt into the central hub city of the entire game — playing the same role Valdrakken and Dornogal played before it.
Because the city’s purpose has changed so dramatically between versions, the fastest way to reach it is different depending on what you’re playing. This guide covers every departure city for both WoW Classic and current Retail (Midnight).
How to Get to Silvermoon City from Orgrimmar
Classic (TBC and Later Eras)
Orgrimmar has a direct portal to Silvermoon City inside the Pathfinder’s Den portal room, found just past the main gate. Step through and you’ll land near the Sunfury Spire. This is the single fastest route for any Horde character.
Mages can also train Teleport: Silvermoon at level 20 (caster only) or Portal: Silvermoon at level 40 (opens a portal the whole group can use), making future trips instant once learned.
Retail (Midnight)
Current Retail makes this even simpler. Silvermoon City is now the expansion’s central hub, and the Orgrimmar portal room has a permanent, direct portal back to Silvermoon on its first floor. No quest chain required for an existing character — just walk in and step through.
How to Get to Silvermoon City from Undercity
Classic (TBC and Later Eras)
Undercity and Silvermoon are connected by the Orb of Translocation, a two-way teleportation device. In Undercity, the orb sits topside above the city, just to the side of the main entrance near the Ruins of Lordaeron. Click it and you’ll arrive instantly outside Sunfury Spire in Silvermoon.
This is generally the fastest route for Undercity-based characters, faster than flying to Orgrimmar first.
Retail (Midnight)
Fly or hearth to Orgrimmar and use the permanent Silvermoon portal in the portal room. There’s no direct shortcut from Undercity itself in current content.
How to Get to Silvermoon City from Thunder Bluff
Classic (TBC and Later Eras)
Thunder Bluff has no direct connection to Silvermoon. The fastest route is:
- Take the zeppelin from Thunder Bluff’s Spirit Rise to Orgrimmar
- Use the Silvermoon portal in the Pathfinder’s Den
Retail (Midnight)
Same approach — fly to Orgrimmar and take the permanent portal from there. ✅
How to Get to Silvermoon City from Shattrath City
Classic (TBC and Later Eras)
Shattrath has its own portal to Silvermoon, located off to the side of the central ring. This is a convenient option if you’re already questing in Outland and don’t want to fly all the way back to Azeroth first.
Retail (Midnight)
Shattrath is legacy content in current Retail and no longer functions as a portal hub. Fly to Orgrimmar instead and use the permanent Silvermoon portal there.
How to Get to Silvermoon City from Stormwind, Ironforge, Darnassus, or The Exodar
Classic (TBC and Later Eras)
Alliance players have no direct route to Silvermoon in Classic, since it’s a Horde-only capital during this era. The only options are a Horde-aligned mage offering a paid portal, or a long and dangerous overland trek north through the Eastern Plaguelands into the Ghostlands — not recommended without a group, especially at low level.
Retail (Midnight)
This is the biggest change between versions. Since Midnight rebuilt Silvermoon as a shared hub city, Stormwind’s portal room now has a direct portal to Silvermoon, added specifically for the Midnight expansion. Alliance players can step straight through it — no Horde escort or paid mage teleport needed anymore. ✅
Ironforge, Darnassus, and The Exodar still have no direct portal of their own — fly or hearth to Stormwind first, then take the Silvermoon portal from the portal room.
📍 Quick Reference: Fastest Routes by Faction
| Departure City | Era | Fastest Route |
|---|---|---|
| Orgrimmar | Classic & Retail | Direct portal (Pathfinder’s Den) |
| Undercity | Classic | Orb of Translocation (direct) |
| Thunder Bluff | Classic & Retail | Zeppelin/fly to Orgrimmar → portal |
| Shattrath City | Classic only | Direct portal |
| Stormwind | Retail only | Direct portal (Midnight addition) |
| Ironforge / Darnassus / The Exodar | Retail only | Fly to Stormwind → portal |
Why Silvermoon City Matters Right Now
Silvermoon’s role has completely changed with the Midnight expansion, and it’s worth understanding why so many players are passing through it daily:
- ✅ It’s the central leveling and endgame hub for the entire Midnight expansion, similar to Valdrakken or Dornogal before it
- ✅ Roughly two-thirds of the rebuilt city is now open to both factions, while a Horde-only section remains in the older, renovated district
- ✅ The Timeways portal hub inside the city connects to the full Mythic+ legacy dungeon rotation, so you rarely need to fly elsewhere for keys
- ✅ Bank, Auction House, class trainers, and the Great Vault are all clustered close together near the central Bazaar
- ✅ Portals to Harandar and Voidstorm, the expansion’s other two leveling zones, are both accessible from inside the city
Quick Tips for New Travelers
- ⚡ In Retail, set your hearthstone to Silvermoon once you arrive — it puts you close to nearly everything you’ll need for the Midnight expansion
- ⚡ If your first character hasn’t finished the Midnight intro questline yet, alts won’t start in Silvermoon until that campaign is complete
- ✅ Horde players in Classic should default to the Orb of Translocation from Undercity if that’s their closer capital — it’s faster than detouring through Orgrimmar
- ❌ Don’t attempt the overland Plaguelands-to-Ghostlands route as Alliance in Classic at low level; it’s a dangerous, PvP-exposed trek through high-level Horde territory
