TBC Classic Fishing Leveling Guide (1-375) | Burning Crusade Anniversary

Fishing is one of the most relaxed secondary professions in TBC Classic Anniversary — no competition for nodes, no auction house camping. You just find a good spot, cast your line, and let the skill come to you. That said, it’s also the slowest profession to level, and if you go in without a plan, it’ll feel like forever.

This guide covers everything you need to get from 1 to 375 in the most efficient way possible — the right zones, the right gear, and the key quests you can’t skip.

Why Level Fishing in TBC Classic?

🎣 Fishing isn’t just a chill hobby. In TBC Classic Anniversary, it directly feeds into:

  • Raid foodSpicy Crawdad (+30 Stamina) and Golden Fish Sticks (+23 Healing Power) are staples in Karazhan and beyond
  • Cooking synergy — leveling both together saves you a ton of gold
  • Gold farming — rare fish and Furious Crawdad from Highland Mixed Schools sell very well
  • Mr. Pinchy — the rarest companion pet in the game, only catchable with high Fishing skill in Terokkar

If you’re raiding seriously, 375 Fishing isn’t optional — it’s just expected.

Essential Gear Before You Start

Getting the right rod and lures early on makes leveling noticeably less painful. Here’s what to look for:

Item Bonus How to Get
Shiny Bauble +25 Fishing (10 min) Fishing suppliers in most cities
Bright Baubles +75 Fishing (10 min) Fishing vendors, Juno Dufrain
Aquadynamic Fish Attractor +100 Fishing (10 min) Crafted by Engineers
Big Iron Fishing Pole +30 Fishing Shellfish Traps in Desolace / AH
Seth’s Graphite Fishing Pole +20 Fishing Quest: Rather Be Fishin’ (Shattrath, lvl 64)
Arcanite Fishing Pole +35 Fishing Win the STV Fishing Extravaganza
Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat +5 / Use: +75 (10 min) Barlo’s daily fishing quests in Shattrath

🎯 For Outland fishing, you’ll eventually need ~400 effective skill (base + gear + lure) to avoid constant “fish got away” messages. Stack Seth’s Pole + Bright Baubles + Aquadynamic Fish Attractor to get there.

How to Learn Fishing (Trainer Locations)

You can learn Fishing at level 5 from any trainer in a major city. Just ask a guard for directions — they’ll mark the trainer on your map.

Horde trainers: Lumak (Orgrimmar), Armand Cromwell (Undercity), Drathen (Silvermoon City), Uthan Stillwater (Mulgore), Lau’Tiki (Durotar)

Alliance trainers: Grimnur Stonebrand (Ironforge), Arnold Leland (Stormwind), Astaia (Darnassus), Warg Deepwater (Ironforge)

Fishing Leveling Path: 1 to 375

Expect around 1,700 total catches to go from 1 to 375, with almost half of those happening between 300 and 375. Patience is the real requirement here. Warcraft Tavern

🟢 1 – 75: Starting Zones

Cast your line anywhere in a starting zone — Durotar, Elwynn Forest, Mulgore, Tirisfal Glades, etc. Use a Shiny Bauble on your rod for the +25 skill bonus to avoid early fish-got-away messages.

⚡ Don’t fish in capital cities at this range — the skill requirement is too high and you’ll miss constantly.

Once you hit 50, go back to your trainer and learn Journeyman Fishing.

🟡 75 – 150: Capital Cities

From 75 to 150, you can simply fish in the waters of any capital city. This is a great AFK range — pick a fountain or river, put on some music, and let the skill tick up. Warcraft Tavern

🟠 150 – 225: Mid-Level Zones

Fish in any zone around level 30. Good options: Dustwallow Marsh, Stranglethorn Vale, or Duskwood.

⚡ Head to Dustwallow Marsh anyway — you’ll need to be there at 225 to unlock Artisan Fishing.

🔴 225: The Nat Pagle Quest (Required)

To train past 225, you must complete Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme. This quest requires level 35 and 225 Fishing skill.

Find Nat Pagle on a small island off the south coast of Dustwallow Marsh. He’ll ask you to catch 4 special fish from 4 different zones:

Fish Zone Location
Misty Reed Mahi Mahi Swamp of Sorrows Misty Reed Strand (ocean coast)
Sar’theris Striker Desolace Sar’theris Strand (ocean coast)
Feralas Ahi Feralas Verdantis River (outside Dire Maul)
Savage Coast Blue Sailfin Stranglethorn Vale Savage Coast

🎯 The Feralas fish requires close to 300 effective skill to catch reliably — equip your best rod and apply Bright Baubles before casting.

After turning in, train Artisan Fishing and you can level up to 300.

🟣 225 – 300: Feralas, STV, or Tanaris

Any zone with decent water works here. Feralas and Stranglethorn Vale are popular choices. Keep using lures to minimize misses.

At skill 275, you’re ready for the next step — but hold off until 300 before heading to Outland.

🔵 300: Learn Master Fishing (Outland Required)

Before fishing in Outland, buy Master Fishing – The Art of Angling from Juno Dufrain at Cenarion Refuge in Zangarmarsh (/way 78, 66). This raises your skill cap to 375. While you’re there, grab ~40x Bright Baubles from him as well.

⚡ You need ~400 effective skill to fish in Zangarmarsh without constant misses. A good rod + Bright Baubles gets you there at 300 base skill.

🔵 300 – 350: Zangarmarsh

Fish in the waters around Cenarion Refuge in Zangarmarsh. The Barbed Gill Trout and Spotted Feltail you catch here are useful for cooking and sell reasonably well.

Head to Zangarmarsh and fish in the waters surrounding Cenarion Refuge until you reach 350 Fishing skill. Make sure to use all your skill-increasing items such as Bright Baubles, or you will miss most fish. Icy Veins

🟤 350 – 375: Terokkar Forest

At 350, head into Terokkar Forest and start fishing in the waters outside of Shattrath City. If you want to find more exotic fish, head toward the eastern side of Terokkar and fish in the rivers. Icy Veins

For the last push to 375, Highland Mixed Schools in Terokkar are the best option — they give Furious Crawdad, which is used for Spicy Crawdad raid food and sells well on the AH. To fish Highland Mixed Schools in Terokkar, you need a 527 effective skill — stacking Seth’s Pole, the Weather-Beaten Hat, a fishing line, and Aquadynamic Fish Attractors is mandatory to avoid fish-got-away messages. MMOJUGG

If you don’t have that gear yet, just fish open water in Terokkar near Shattrath to finish off 375.

Skill Requirements by Zone (Quick Reference)

Zone Min. Effective Skill Needed
Starting zones / Capital cities 0–75
Mid-level Azeroth (STV, Dustwallow) 150–225
Feralas / Tanaris 225–300
Zangarmarsh (open water) ~400
Terokkar Forest (open water) ~400
Highland Mixed Schools (Terokkar) 527

TBC Fishing Dailies (Barlo’s Quests)

Once you’re in Outland, Barlo at Silmyr Lake in Terokkar Forest offers a rotating daily fishing quest. Completing these dailies gives you a Bag of Fishing Treasures which can contain companion pets, cooking recipes, and fishing equipment — including the Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat and the Spun Truesilver Fishing Line. LootXP Hub

These dailies are worth doing every day even after hitting 375 — the rewards are genuinely useful and the hat alone saves you a lot of lure cost.

Tips & Common Mistakes

✅ Always apply a lure before casting — fishing without one in Outland is borderline useless
✅ Level Cooking alongside Fishing — you’ll use the same fish and save gold on both
✅ Check raw fish prices on the AH before cooking — sometimes selling Barbed Gill Trout raw is more profitable
❌ Don’t try to fish in Outland before 300 — you’ll miss everything
❌ Don’t skip the Nat Pagle quest — there’s no other way to get Artisan
❌ Don’t forget to buy the Master Fishing book from Juno Dufrain — it won’t train automatically

FAQ

How long does it take to level Fishing 1-375 in TBC Classic?

Expect roughly 10–15 hours total depending on your pace and how efficiently you use lures. The 300–375 stretch in Outland takes the longest because skill-ups slow down significantly.

Do I need a fishing pole or can I use any weapon?

You need an actual fishing pole equipped to fish. Start with a basic vendor pole, then upgrade to the Big Iron Fishing Pole or Seth’s Graphite Fishing Pole as soon as possible for the skill bonus.

What’s the best lure to use in TBC Classic?

The Aquadynamic Fish Attractor (+100 skill, 10 minutes) is the best lure in the game. It’s crafted by Engineers. If you don’t have access to one, Bright Baubles (+75) from fishing vendors are a solid alternative.

Can I level Fishing and Cooking at the same time?

Yes, and it’s strongly recommended. You’ll catch fish while leveling Fishing that directly feed your Cooking progression. This saves significant time and gold compared to leveling them separately.

What fish should I target in Outland for raid food?

Furious Crawdad from Highland Mixed Schools in Terokkar is the most valuable — used for Spicy Crawdad (+30 Stamina). Barbed Gill Trout is used for Golden Fish Sticks (+23 Healing Power). Both are staple raid consumables in TBC Classic Anniversary.

Is fishing useful for PvP in TBC Classic?

Somewhat. Recipe: Captain Rumsey’s Lager from Barlo’s daily bag gives a temporary Stamina boost that some PvP players like to stack before battlegrounds. The buff food from fishing also helps in Arena preparation.
