TBC Classic Mining Leveling Guide 1-375 – Fastest Path for Burning Crusade

Mining in TBC Classic is one of the most straightforward professions to level, and one of the most valuable. It feeds three major crafting professions — Blacksmithing, Jewelcrafting, and Engineering — and generates steady gold through ore sales at every stage of the expansion. Whether you’re coming in fresh on the Anniversary servers or picking up a new alt, this guide covers the fastest path from 1 to 375.

There are two approaches: smelting (buy ore from the AH and smelt it at a forge) or field farming (ride routes and mine veins yourself). Smelting is faster but costs gold. Farming is slower but earns it. Both are covered below.

Before You Start

Two things you need from day one:

A Mining Pick — buy one from the Mining Supply vendor near your trainer. You don’t equip it, just keep it in your bags. Without it, you can’t mine anything.

Find Minerals minimap filter — enable this in your minimap dropdown. It shows ore node locations on your map as you ride past them. Essential for efficient farming.

Mining Trainers

You need to visit a trainer to unlock each skill tier. Don’t forget to upgrade when you hit the required skill level or you’ll cap out early.

Rank Skill Required Where to Learn
Apprentice 1 Any starting zone trainer
Journeyman 50 Any major city trainer
Expert 125 Any major city trainer
Artisan 200 Any major city trainer
Master (TBC) 300 Outland — Hellfire Peninsula

Classic Trainers (skill 1–300) — any trainer in a major city works. Notable options:

Horde: Makaru in Orgrimmar, Brek Stonehoof in Thunder Bluff, Belil in Silvermoon City

Alliance: Geofram Bouldertoe in Ironforge, Gelman Stonehand in Stormwind, Muaat in The Exodar

TBC Master Trainers (skill 300–375) — once you’re in Outland:

  • Alliance: Hurnak Grimmord at Honor Hold, Hellfire Peninsula
  • Horde: Krugosh at Thrallmar, Hellfire Peninsula
  • Both: Trainers in Shattrath City (Aldor and Scryer sides)

Method 1: Smelting Path (Fastest, Costs Gold)

If you have the gold or access to a well-stocked Auction House, smelting is significantly faster than farming routes. You can reach skill 290 entirely at a forge without leaving the city. The last 10 points before 300 require actual mining since there’s no smelting recipe that stays orange long enough to cover it.

The amounts below are estimates — smelting recipes go yellow and then green, so actual consumption depends on your luck with skill-ups. Buy a small buffer above what’s listed.

Skill Range What to Smelt Approx. Ore Needed
1–65 Smelt Copper ~130x Copper Ore
65–75 Smelt Tin ~70x Tin Ore
75–105 Smelt Bronze ~70x Tin (already bought) + ~70x Copper
105–125 Smelt Silver ~35x Silver Ore
125–155 Smelt Iron ~60x Iron Ore
155–175 Smelt Gold ~25x Gold Ore
175–230 Smelt Mithril ~300x Mithril Ore
230–250 Smelt Truesilver ~60x Truesilver Ore
250–290 Smelt Thorium ~170x Thorium Ore
290–300 Mine Thorium veins See zone routes below

🎯 Tip: The 225–230 stretch on Mithril is notorious for low skill-up rates. Buy extra Mithril just in case — it’s frustrating to run out at that specific window.

Method 2: Farming Routes by Zone

If you’re leveling more casually, farming your way up is completely fine and earns you ore to sell or use. Here’s the most efficient zone path:

1–65: Copper — Any Starter Zone

Every starter zone has Copper Ore. Pick whichever you’re already questing in. The only exception: Night Elves in Teldrassil have no copper — head to Darkshore first.

Best zones: Durotar (Horde), Dun Morogh (Alliance), Elwynn Forest, Mulgore

🎯 If you’re in Durotar, go through the Venture Co. Mine before jumping down from the cliffs. It contains ~8 Copper Veins in a single pass.

65–125: Tin, Copper, Silver

Visit your trainer and learn Journeyman Mining at skill 50. Then move to zones that mix Tin and Copper.

Best zones: Hillsbrad Foothills, Redridge Mountains, Ashenvale, The Barrens

Tin Ore and Copper Ore will both give skill-ups here. Silver Ore unlocks at 75 and appears mixed in the same routes.

125–175: Iron, Gold

Learn Expert Mining at skill 125. Iron is the main target now.

Best zones: Thousand Needles, Desolace, Arathi Highlands

Arathi Highlands is excellent if you’re a higher level character — it has a clean mountain loop with caves. Lower level characters should stick to Thousand Needles or Desolace where the mobs are more manageable. Gold Ore unlocks at 155 and spawns in the same areas.

175–245: Mithril, Truesilver

Learn Artisan Mining at skill 200 (requires skill 200, not 175 — keep farming until you hit it).

Best zones: The Hinterlands, Tanaris, Arathi Highlands

Mithril Ore is the core ore for this whole stretch. Hinterlands has a compact loop good for solo farming. Tanaris is larger but has multiple caves worth clearing. Truesilver Ore unlocks at 230 and spawns alongside Mithril in the same zones.

245–300: Thorium, Rich Thorium

Small Thorium Vein unlocks at 245. Rich Thorium Vein unlocks at 275 and gives faster skill-ups.

Best zones: Un’Goro Crater, Eastern Plaguelands, Winterspring, Burning Steppes

Un’Goro Crater is the classic choice — the perimeter loop hits both Small and Rich Thorium Veins cleanly. Eastern Plaguelands and Winterspring are solid alternatives if Un’Goro is heavily contested on your server.

⚡ At this point you can also start entering Outland at skill 275 since Fel Iron Ore can be mined from 275. If Outland isn’t too crowded on your server, jumping in early can speed things up considerably.

300–375: Outland Mining

First stop after reaching Outland: visit a Master Mining trainer in Hellfire Peninsula (see trainer section above) to unlock skill progression past 300.

New Outland Ores

Ore Skill to Mine Where Found
Fel Iron Ore 275 All Outland zones, dense in Hellfire Peninsula
Adamantite Ore 325 All Outland zones except Hellfire Peninsula
Rich Adamantite Ore 350 Netherstorm, Shadowmoon Valley (flying required)
Khorium Ore 375 All Outland zones (rare, spawns in place of Adamantite/Fel Iron)

Khorium Ore works the same way Truesilver did in Classic — it rarely replaces other nodes rather than spawning on its own. It requires 375 skill to mine and can’t be prospected.

There’s also a small chance to find Eternium Ore inside Adamantite and Khorium deposits. It’s not a dedicated node — just a bonus drop from higher-tier veins.

300–325: Fel Iron in Hellfire Peninsula

Run the mountain ridgelines and outer edges of Hellfire Peninsula. The zone is dense with Fel Iron Deposits and is the fastest zone to level in at this stage. No flying required — the ground routes work well here.

Fel Iron technically gives skill-ups all the way to 375, but skill-up rates drop off after 325, so switching ores is more efficient.

325–350: Adamantite in Zangarmarsh or Terokkar Forest

Move to Adamantite Ore once you hit 325. Zangarmarsh and Terokkar Forest both have reliable cave routes worth clearing. Four or five marked caves per zone — always go all the way to the back of each cave since nodes often sit deep inside where you won’t see them from the entrance.

Best zones: Zangarmarsh, Terokkar Forest, Nagrand

350–375: Adamantite and Rich Adamantite

At 350 you can mine everything in Outland except Khorium (which needs 375). Nagrand becomes the go-to zone at this point — it has a clean circuit with both regular and Rich Adamantite.

Rich Adamantite appears frequently in Netherstorm and Shadowmoon Valley but most of those nodes are in elevated areas that require a flying mount. If you’re already 70 with flying, those zones are extremely efficient. If not, stick to Nagrand’s ground route.

🎯 Flying mount tip: Mining is dramatically faster with a flying mount in Outland. If you hit 70 before reaching 375, buying even a basic mount before finishing the last stretch is worth it.

FAQ

What is the fastest way to level Mining in TBC Classic?

The fastest method is smelting — buying raw ore from the Auction House and smelting it at any forge. You can reach skill 290 this way without leaving the city. The main downside is the gold cost. If you’re on a budget or prefer earning gold while leveling, farming routes in the appropriate zones are efficient and profitable, just slower overall.

Do I need a Mining Pick to mine in TBC Classic?

Yes. You must have a Mining Pick in your bags to mine any ore. You don’t equip it — just keeping it in your inventory is enough. Buy one from the Mining Supply vendor near your Mining trainer. They cost only a few copper.

Where do I learn Master Mining for TBC Classic (skill 300–375)?

Once you’re in Outland, visit Hurnak Grimmord at Honor Hold in Hellfire Peninsula (Alliance) or Krugosh at Thrallmar in Hellfire Peninsula (Horde). Both Shattrath City trainers also teach Master Mining for either faction.

What are the new ores in TBC Classic Outland?

Three new ore types exist in Outland: Fel Iron Ore (unlocks at 275 skill, found everywhere in Outland with the highest density in Hellfire Peninsula), Adamantite Ore (unlocks at 325 skill, found in all Outland zones except Hellfire Peninsula), and Khorium Ore (requires 375 skill, rare and spawns in place of other nodes). Eternium Ore can also drop as a bonus from Adamantite and Khorium deposits.

Can I mine Fel Iron Ore before reaching Outland?

No. Fel Iron Ore only exists in Outland zones. However, you can enter Outland at skill 275 and start mining it there before reaching skill 300. If Outland isn’t crowded on your server, heading through the Dark Portal before you’ve fully finished the Azeroth stretch is a valid strategy for speeding up the 275–300 range.

What professions pair best with Mining in TBC Classic?

Mining feeds three major crafting professions: Blacksmithing, Jewelcrafting, and Engineering. Pairing Mining with any of these means you supply your own materials rather than buying from the Auction House. For pure gold-making without a second crafting profession, Mining also pairs well with Herbalism — both are gathering professions that don’t require gold to level.
