TBC Classic Skinning Leveling Guide 1-375 – Fastest Path for Burning Crusade

Skinning in TBC Classic is one of the simplest professions to level and one of the most beginner-friendly gold makers in the game. You kill beasts, loot them, and skin them. That’s it. No recipes to buy, no materials to track, no crafting queue to manage. The leather you collect sells consistently throughout every phase because Leatherworking depends on it for gear, drums, and leg armor kits.

This guide covers the fastest leveling path from 1 to 375 on the TBC Classic Anniversary servers, including every trainer upgrade, the best zones at each stage, and what to expect from Outland skinning once you get there.

A Skinning Knife — buy one from any Leatherworking Supply vendor near your trainer, or from General/Trade goods vendors. It does not need to be equipped. It just has to be in your bags. You literally cannot skin anything without it, so check your bags before flying out to a farm zone.

Loot every mob before you skin it. A mob must be fully looted before you can skin it. Right-click the corpse to loot, then right-click again to skin.

🎯 Optional enchant: Formula: Enchant Gloves – Skinning adds +5 to your effective Skinning skill, letting you skin mobs one level higher than you normally could. Not essential, but useful if you’re pushing the edge of your skill range.

Skinning Skill Formula

You don’t need to memorize this if you follow the guide, but it’s useful context:

  • Below skill 100: Highest mob level you can skin = (Skinning skill ÷ 10) + 10
  • Skill 100 and above: Highest mob level you can skin = Skinning skill ÷ 5

A simpler way to think about it: a level 30 mob needs roughly 150 skill, a level 42 mob needs about 210, and once you hit 350 skill you can skin virtually every non-elite mob in Outland.

Skinning Trainers

Any trainer in a major city can teach you ranks 1 through 300. You only need to make a new trip when you need to unlock the next tier.

Rank Skill Required Where
Apprentice 1 Any major city
Journeyman 50 Any major city
Expert 125 Any major city
Artisan 200 Any major city
Master (TBC) 300 Outland — Hellfire Peninsula

Recommended trainers for easy access:

Alliance: Balthus Stoneflayer in Ironforge — centrally located, easy to reach at any level

Horde: Thuwd in Orgrimmar — in the Drag near Kodohide Leatherworkers

TBC Master Trainers (300–375):

  • Alliance: Jelena Nightsky at Honor Hold, Hellfire Peninsula (/way 54.4 63.2) — inside the inn, right before the stairs
  • Horde: Moorutu at Thrallmar, Hellfire Peninsula (/way 56.2 38.6) — near the inn, behind a mammoth bone
  • Both factions: Seymour in Shattrath City’s Lower City

1–75: Any Starter Zone

Learn Apprentice Skinning and pick up your Skinning Knife. Every starter zone has skinnable beasts — just kill and skin whatever you find while questing. You won’t have access to professions until level 5, so you’ll need to get out of the very first questing area before you can start.

Horde: Start at Sen’Jin Village in Durotar, skin beasts heading northwest toward Orgrimmar. Learn Journeyman Skinning when you arrive.

Alliance: Work around the lake near Ironforge in Dun Morogh, then move toward Loch Modan. Pick up Journeyman Skinning at Ironforge.

🎯 Free skill-ups: In starter zones, a lot of players kill beasts and walk away without skinning. If you see a fresh corpse near other players, skin it. You’ll get skill points for free.

75–155: The Barrens / Loch Modan / Wetlands

The goal here is a steady supply of Light Leather and Medium Leather from mid-level beasts.

Horde: Follow the path south through The Barrens toward Camp Taurajo. Skin everything along the way. Pick up Expert Skinning from Dranh at Camp Taurajo when you hit 125, then continue south into Thousand Needles.

Alliance: Follow the river through Loch Modan, skinning beasts along the way. Head into Wetlands, fly back to Ironforge for Expert Skinning when you hit 125, then return to Wetlands to push toward 155.

Make sure you’ve hit at least 125 skill before moving to the next zone — you need Expert Skinning to continue past 150.

155–205: Thousand Needles / Arathi Highlands

This range is about Medium Leather and Heavy Leather from higher-level beasts like raptors and basilisks.

Horde: Continue south through Thousand Needles, skinning raptors and basilisks. Reach 205 before leaving, then fly to Camp Mojache in Feralas to learn Artisan Skinning from Kulleg Stonehorn.

Alliance: Arathi Highlands has excellent raptor density from 155 onward. Push to 205, then fly to Ironforge and learn Artisan Skinning from Balthus Stoneflayer.

🎯 In Arathi, the level 36–37 raptors in the southeast corner need Skinning 180 to skin. Don’t venture into that pocket until your skill is there.

205–300: Feralas / Un’Goro Crater

The best sustained skinning in Classic Azeroth. Heavy Leather and Thick Leather start appearing here, and the mob density is good enough that you can push a long range without moving zones.

205–260 — Feralas: Skin beasts around Camp Mojache from 205 to 230. Once you hit 230, move toward the Yeti cave and work the area from 230 to 260. If the cave is busy, Hippogryphs to the south are a reliable alternative.

260–280 — Upper Feralas: A second Yeti cave with higher-level mobs. Clear the cave and work the area outside it for more Thick Leather.

280–300 — Un’Goro Crater: At 280 you can move to Un’Goro for better mob variety. The Tar Lurkers and Diemetradons around the crater are dense and easy to chain-pull. Alternatively, you can stay in Feralas and keep skinning — both work fine.

300–375: Outland

As soon as you step into Outland, visit a Master Skinning trainer before doing anything else. You’ll hit skill 300 from late Azeroth skinning but you’ll be capped there — you can’t progress past 300 without learning Master Skinning in Hellfire Peninsula first.

New Outland Materials

Outland introduces several new skinnable materials worth knowing before you start farming:

Material Source Used For
Knothide Leather Scraps Most beasts in Outland Combine 5 into Knothide Leather
Knothide Leather Most beasts in Outland Core Leatherworking material, always in demand
Thick Clefthoof Leather Clefthoof mobs in Nagrand Nethercleft Leg Armor, Heavy Clefthoof set
Fel Hide Demon-type mobs Fel Leather Boots, Fel Leather Leggings
Nether Dragonscales Dragonkin in Shadowmoon Valley, Netherstorm, Blade’s Edge Dragonscale Leatherworking sets — high value

Knothide Leather is the baseline material you’ll farm most of the time. Scraps drop frequently and are converted into Knothide Leather either through Leatherworking (5 scraps = 1 leather) or sold directly on the AH.

300–330: Hellfire Peninsula — Helboars and Ravagers

The fastest opening stretch. The entire zone is packed with skinnable mobs.

300–305: Starving Helboars around Zeth’gor — low-level, easy to kill, fast respawn. Good starting point even if you’re not level 70 yet.

305–310: Move to Deranged Helboars in the same general area. Slightly higher skill requirement but still very accessible.

310–330: Razorfang Hatchlings and Razorfang Ravagers between Hellfire Peninsula and Terokkar Forest. These are also a great choice. Quillfang Ravagers near the Zangarmarsh border are another option if the main spots are busy.

330–375: Nagrand — Clefthoofs and Talbuks

Nagrand is the best zone for the final stretch. It’s dense with skinnable beasts and even the leather you farm here is valuable — Thick Clefthoof Leather from Clefthoofs is used for the Nethercleft Leg Armor pattern and sells well.

Kill and skin Clefthoofs, Clefthoof Bulls, and Aged Clefthoofs around the marked plains area, along with Talbuks throughout the zone.

⚡ At skill 360 you can skin every non-elite mob in Outland. From that point on you’re not restricted to specific mob types — you can freely farm whatever you want for the last 15 points and for all future leather farming.

360–375 alternatives: If you want to branch out from Nagrand, Netherstorm and Blade’s Edge Mountains have good populations of Dragonkin mobs that drop Nether Dragonscales. These are worth significantly more than standard leather and are in particular demand for Dragonscale Leatherworking crafts.

FAQ

Do I need a Skinning Knife to skin mobs in TBC Classic?

Yes. You must have a Skinning Knife in your bags at all times to skin any mob. It does not need to be equipped — just keep it in your inventory. Buy one from any Leatherworking Supply vendor near your Skinning trainer. Without it, right-clicking a skinnable corpse will do nothing.

Where do I learn Master Skinning in TBC Classic?

Once you’re in Outland, visit Jelena Nightsky at Honor Hold in Hellfire Peninsula (Alliance, /way 54.4 63.2) or Moorutu at Thrallmar in Hellfire Peninsula (Horde, /way 56.2 38.6). Both factions can also learn from Seymour in Shattrath City’s Lower City. Learn Master Skinning immediately upon arriving — you can’t progress past 300 without it.

What leather drops in Outland from Skinning?

The main material is Knothide Leather (and Knothide Leather Scraps, which combine into Knothide Leather). Other notable drops include Thick Clefthoof Leather from Clefthoofs in Nagrand, Fel Hide from demon-type mobs, and Nether Dragonscales from Dragonkin in Shadowmoon Valley, Netherstorm, and Blade’s Edge Mountains. All of these sell well due to Leatherworking demand.

What level mobs can I skin at a given Skinning skill?

Below skill 100, the max mob level you can skin equals your Skinning skill divided by 10, plus 10. At skill 100 and above, the formula changes to your Skinning skill divided by 5. In practical terms, a level 30 mob needs about 150 skill and a level 42 mob needs about 210. Once you reach skill 350, you can skin nearly every non-elite mob in Outland.

Is Skinning worth it for gold making in TBC Classic?

Yes. Knothide Leather is in constant demand throughout the expansion because Leatherworking uses it for gear, leg armor kits, and Drums of Battle. Thick Clefthoof Leather and Nether Dragonscales fetch significantly higher prices as specialty materials. Pairing Skinning with Leatherworking cuts your crafting costs heavily, while pairing it with a second gathering profession like Mining or Herbalism maximizes raw gold income per hour.

What is the best profession to pair with Skinning in TBC Classic?

Leatherworking is the natural pairing. You supply all your own materials, saving hundreds to thousands of gold over the expansion while also being able to sell crafted gear. If you prefer pure gold income without crafting, Skinning pairs well with Mining or Herbalism as a double-gathering setup that earns from two markets simultaneously.
