Tempest Keep doesn’t punish a bad composition the way some TBC raids do — there’s no resist gear requirement, and the bosses are largely throughput and execution checks rather than strict class checks. That said, certain classes shine on specific encounters, and knowing where to slot people makes the difference between a smooth night and a frustrating one. Here’s how to build your raid comp for The Eye. ⚔️
General Raid Composition
Before getting into per-boss specifics, here’s a solid baseline 25-player comp that works across all four encounters:
| Role | Recommended Count | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tanks | 3 | At least 2-3 for Void Reaver’s rotation |
| Healers | 5-6 | Raid-wide healing matters more than tank healing here |
| Melee DPS | 6-8 | Rogues and Warriors are excellent on Kael’thas |
| Ranged DPS | 8-10 | Mages and Warlocks shine on adds and Phoenixes |
🎯 Tip: This raid is genuinely flexible — unlike Serpentshrine Cavern, no resist gear is needed for any encounter in The Eye, so you can bring your standard progression raid setup without extra preparation.
Tanks: What You Need
Tempest Keep doesn’t have a strict “bring this tank class” requirement, but each fight tests something different:
- ⚡ Warrior/Druid tanks — Useful on Al’ar’s first phase, since Intercept and Feral Charge let them quickly return to their assigned platform after the boss relocates
- ⚡ Paladin tanks — Good for picking up adds on Solarian and Al’ar thanks to AoE threat tools
- ⚡ High-avoidance tanks — Void Reaver is immune to taunt, so a tank with strong dodge/parry helps absorb the threat reset from Knock Away
You’ll want a minimum of 3 tanks for Void Reaver specifically, since his Knock Away ability wipes the current target’s threat and forces a rotation. A fourth tank is sometimes used if your raid struggles to hold consistent threat without enough Hunters to help.
Healers: What You Need
Healing in The Eye leans more toward raid-wide throughput than heavy tank healing, with two notable exceptions:
- ✅ Void Reaver — Pounding hits everyone near the boss, so AoE healing (Circle of Healing, Chain Heal, Holy Nova) is extremely valuable
- ✅ Kael’thas Phase 5 — Raid-wide shadow damage from Nether Vapor clouds requires strong sustained healing output
- ✅ Retribution Paladin with Judgement of Light — Specifically called out as a strong addition for passive raid healing during Void Reaver
5-6 healers is a comfortable number for a progression-geared raid. Better-geared groups can sometimes trim this down, but don’t go below 5 unless your raid is significantly overgeared for the content.
DPS: Class Breakdown by Fight
Al’ar
No special class requirements here — this fight is about positioning and add management more than raw class utility. Ranged DPS that can quickly reposition between platforms has a slight edge.
Void Reaver
This is where Beast Mastery Hunters truly shine. Misdirection helps stabilize the tank rotation after every Knock Away, and Hunters are excellent at maintaining damage output while repositioning for Arcane Orb. On the flip side, Warlocks have a rough time here — they lack threat-reduction talents beyond Soulshatter on a long cooldown, and their immobility makes dodging Arcane Orb and avoiding Pounding pushback awkward.
- ✅ Bring: Hunters (Misdirection), mobile ranged DPS
- ❌ Be cautious with: Warlocks (threat issues, poor mobility), Shadow Priests (high threat from Vampiric Embrace healing)
High Astromancer Solarian
This fight tests add management and raid awareness more than any single class’s kit. A healthy mix of ranged and melee DPS that can quickly switch to adds during the Voidwalker phase is more important than any specific class.
Kael’thas Sunstrider
The final boss is where class composition matters most:
- 🔥 Engineers — Super Sapper Charges help burn down Kael’thas’s legendary weapons faster during Phase 2, especially valuable if your raid is short on AoE classes like Mages and Warlocks
- 🔥 Rogues, Warriors, and Hunters — Ideal candidates to wield daggers that break Mind Control, since the proc only triggers from special attacks (not auto-attacks), and these classes have cheap, spammable abilities like Hamstring and Wing Clip to proc it reliably
- 🔥 Mages and Warlocks — Strong AoE helps clear adds and burn down Phoenix Eggs quickly during Phase 4
- 🔥 A dedicated interrupt class — Someone needs to reliably interrupt Kael’thas’s Pyroblast and Fireball casts, which can one-shot undergeared tanks
- 🔥 Hunters — Can be assigned to tank the Netherstrand Longbow weapon and keep it angled away from the raid during Phase 2
🎯 Tip: Spread the Mind Control daggers across as many melee/ranged-with-melee-weapon classes as possible — the more people who can break a Mind Controlled ally quickly, the less raid-wide damage you take during Phase 4 and 5.
📋 Quick Comp Checklist
- ✅ 3+ tanks, ideally with at least one high-avoidance tank for Void Reaver
- ✅ 5-6 healers comfortable with AoE/raid-wide healing styles
- ✅ 2+ Beast Mastery Hunters for Misdirection on Void Reaver
- ✅ At least 1-2 Engineers for Super Sapper Charges on Kael’thas weapons
- ✅ A reliable interrupt rotation assigned for Kael’thas’s Pyroblast/Fireball
- ✅ Daggers distributed to melee/Hunters for Mind Control breaks
None of these are hard requirements — The Eye is forgiving enough that most balanced 25-player raids can clear it with good execution. But if you’re optimizing your roster, prioritizing Hunters for Void Reaver and Engineers for Kael’thas will make your progression nights noticeably smoother.
