Leatherworking is one of the few professions in TBC Classic Anniversary that delivers both personal power and raid utility at the same time. From Drums of Battle that buff your entire party to Bind on Pickup BiS sets you can craft before stepping into your first raid — if you wear Leather or Mail, this profession deserves your attention.
If you’re still working through the leveling process, our TBC Classic Leatherworking Leveling Guide covers 1–375 in detail. This guide focuses on the profession’s mechanics, specializations, and the crafted items that matter most at endgame.
Leatherworking produces three categories of output:
Armor and Gear — Leather and Mail sets designed for Rogues, Druids, Hunters, and Shamans. Most of the best pieces are Bind on Pickup, meaning only the crafter can equip them.
Enhancements — Permanent stat boosts applied to gear slots. Items like Heavy Knothide Armor Kit, Cobrahide Leg Armor, and Clefthide Leg Armor stay in demand throughout the entire expansion because every new piece of gear needs them.
Drums — The most unique feature of the profession. Drums provide party-wide buffs and can only be crafted and used by Leatherworkers.
Drums — Why They Matter in Raids
Drums are the main reason raid leaders want at least one Leatherworker in every party group.
| Drum | Effect | Pattern Source |
|---|---|---|
| Drums of Battle | Haste Rating for the whole party (30 sec) | The Sha’tar — Honored |
| Drums of War | Attack Power + Spell Damage | Trainer |
| Drums of Speed | Movement Speed (30 sec) | Mag’har / Kurenai — Honored |
| Drums of Restoration | Heal-over-Time on nearby party members | Mag’har / Kurenai — Honored |
| Drums of Panic | Fear effect on 5 nearby enemies | Keepers of Time — Honored |
🎯 Drums of Battle is the standout. Haste Rating in TBC means faster swings, faster casts, and more damage across the board — for your entire party group. In 25-player raids with multiple Leatherworkers rotating Drums across different groups, the combined effect on total raid DPS is significant.
To unlock the pattern, reach Honored with The Sha’tar. The easiest path is running Tempest Keep dungeons — Arcatraz, Botanica, and Mechanar — while leveling through Outland.
Note that Engineering explosives share a cooldown with Leatherworking Drums, so if you run both professions on the same character, you can’t use both in the same cooldown window.
The Three Specializations — Which One Is Right for You?
At level 40 with 225 Leatherworking skill, you can choose one of three specializations. Each one unlocks a specific set of Bind on Pickup patterns exclusive to that spec.
🐉 Dragonscale Leatherworking
Built for Hunters and Enhancement Shamans. Dragonscale focuses on Mail armor with strong Agility and Attack Power itemization, which are exactly the stats these two classes want in early Outland.
Top crafted items:
- Ebon Netherscale Breastplate — Mail, designed for Hunters
- Netherstrike Breastplate — Mail, strong for Agility Hunter and Enhancement Shaman
To unlock the spec, Alliance players speak to Peter Galen in Azshara (coords 37, 65), and Horde players speak to Thorkaf Dragoneye in Badlands (coords 62, 57). Both require turning in crafted Leatherworking items and materials.
⚡ Elemental Leatherworking
The more flexible option, focused on Agility-based Leather wearers — Feral Druids and Rogues primarily. Elemental also gives access to the Windhawk set, which is shared with Tribal.
Top crafted items:
- Primalstrike Vest — Leather, Agility and Attack Power focused
- Windhawk Hauberk — Leather, Spirit and Healing Power for Resto Druid and Resto Shaman
🌿 Tribal Leatherworking
Designed for caster Leather wearers — Resto Druid, Balance Druid, and sometimes Feral Druid. Tribal has strong Phase 3 patterns that stay relevant deep into the expansion.
Top crafted items:
- Windhawk Hauberk — BoP Leather, Spirit and Healing Power
- Shoulderpads of Renewed Life — Phase 3 pattern from Black Temple / Mount Hyjal
Quick Spec Reference
| Class / Role | Best Spec |

| Hunter | Dragonscale |
| Enhancement Shaman | Dragonscale |
| Feral Druid DPS | Elemental |
| Rogue | Elemental |
| Resto Druid | Tribal |
| Balance Druid | Tribal |
| Resto Shaman | Elemental (Windhawk set) |
⚡ You can change your specialization in TBC Classic Anniversary without dropping the entire profession, but it costs 100 gold and you lose access to the BoP patterns from your previous spec.
Best Crafted Gear by Role
⚔️ Physical DPS — Hunter / Enhancement Shaman
The Netherstrike Set — Netherstrike Breastplate, Netherstrike Belt, and Netherstrike Bracers — forms a solid pre-raid BiS package for Hunters and Enhancement Shamans. The main bottleneck is Primal Nether, which drops from Heroic dungeons.
🩹 Healer — Resto Druid / Resto Shaman
The Windhawk Set — Windhawk Hauberk, Windhawk Belt, and Windhawk Bracers — is one of the strongest pre-raid healing sets in Phase 1. High Spirit and solid Healing Power make it a great target before you’re clearing Karazhan consistently.
🐾 Agility Leather — Feral Druid DPS / Rogue
The Primalstrike Set — Primalstrike Vest, Primalstrike Belt, and Primalstrike Bracers — stacks Agility and Attack Power, making it a reliable stepping stone into early raid content.
Enhancements — Consistent Demand, Consistent Income
These items are bought constantly because every new piece of gear needs one applied to it:
| Enhancement | Effect | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy Knothide Armor Kit | +10 Armor to any slot | Trainer |
| Cobrahide Leg Armor | +40 Attack Power, +10 Crit Rating | Thrallmar / Honor Hold — Honored |
| Clefthide Leg Armor | +30 Healing Power, +10 MP5 | Thrallmar / Honor Hold — Honored |
| Glove Reinforcements | +240 Armor to gloves | Trainer |
| Vindicator’s Armor Kit | +8 Resilience | Aldor — Revered |
| Magister’s Armor Kit | +8 MP5 | Scryers — Revered |
🎯 Cobrahide Leg Armor is the one to prioritize. The pattern comes from Thrallmar (Horde) or Honor Hold (Alliance) at Honored, and demand for it stays strong from Phase 1 all the way to Sunwell.
Best Profession Pairing
Skinning is the natural partner. Every material Leatherworking needs — Knothide Leather, Thick Clefthoof Leather, Cobra Scales — comes from Skinning. Running both professions together cuts your material costs dramatically and gives you a self-sustaining farming loop throughout the expansion.
Check out the TBC Classic Skinning Guide to find the best farming spots for each material.
Is Leatherworking Worth It?
For Leather and Mail wearers — yes, absolutely. Drums of Battle alone is a reason some raid leaders specifically want Leatherworkers in their groups, and the crafted BiS sets mean you’re not fully dependent on RNG drops from Karazhan to gear up.
For other classes, professions like Jewelcrafting or Enchanting typically offer more value. Take a look at the TBC Classic Best Professions Guide to see what fits your class best.
