Elemental Leatherworking is the go-to specialization for Agility-based physical DPS in TBC Classic Anniversary. If you play a Rogue, a Feral Druid, or a Hunter who prefers Leather over Mail, this spec hands you a pre-raid BiS set you can craft yourself — no raid required, no loot competition, just materials and time.
This guide covers everything about the Elemental spec: how to unlock it, every BoP pattern it gives you, which classes benefit most, and what materials you’ll need. What Is Elemental Leatherworking?
Elemental Leatherworking is one of three specializations available to Leatherworkers in TBC Classic, alongside Dragonscale and Tribal. You choose your spec at level 40 with 225 Leatherworking skill, and the choice determines which Bind on Pickup endgame sets you can craft for yourself.
Elemental’s identity is Agility and Attack Power Leather gear. Where Dragonscale focuses on Mail for Hunters and Enhancement Shamans, and Tribal leans toward healers and casters, Elemental is all about physical DPS who wear Leather — Rogues, Feral Druids, and Hunters who want the flexibility of Leather itemization.
🎯 One important thing to know upfront: all three specialization sets require 375 Leatherworking skill to craft. The spec itself doesn’t speed up leveling — it only unlocks the BoP patterns you can learn from your trainer once you reach max skill. Every other Leatherworking recipe works the same regardless of which spec you pick.
Who Should Choose Elemental Leatherworking?
| Class / Spec | Reason |
|---|---|
| Rogue (all specs) | Primalstrike is pre-raid BiS Leather with strong Agility and AP |
| Feral Druid DPS | Best Agility Leather set available before Karazhan drops |
| Hunter (Survival / Marksmanship) | Primalstrike beats Ebon Netherscale in raw Agility despite being Leather, not Mail |
| Enhancement Shaman | Dragonscale is usually better (Mail), but Elemental works if you prefer Leather |
Hunters have a real choice between Elemental and Dragonscale. Elemental gives the Primalstrike set in Leather with strong Agility, Attack Power, and a little Hit Rating. Dragonscale gives the Netherstrike set in Mail. Which is better depends on your specific stat needs — but Primalstrike is competitive enough that it’s consistently recommended even for Hunters in early Phase 1.
How to Unlock Elemental Leatherworking
You need 225 Leatherworking skill and character level 40 before you can choose any specialization. Once you meet those requirements, find the appropriate quest giver:
Alliance — Sarah Tanner in Searing Gorge (coords 63, 76). She is your Master Elemental Leatherworker trainer and gives you the specialization quest.
Horde — Brumn Winterhoof in Arathi Highlands, north of Stromgarde Keep (coords 28, 45).
Quest Requirements
To complete the Elemental Leatherworking quest, you need to bring the following materials:
- 2x Heart of Fire
- 2x Globe of Water
- 2x Core of Earth
- 2x Breath of Wind
All four are elemental drops from the appropriate mobs across Azeroth — Fire elementals, Water elementals, Earth elementals, and Air elementals. They’re tradeable, so checking the Auction House is often faster than farming them individually. None are particularly expensive, and you’ll typically spend under 20 gold total on the materials.
⚠️ This choice is permanent in a sense — completing the quest locks you out of Dragonscale and Tribal specialization quests. You can switch specs later for 100 gold, but you’ll lose access to your current BoP patterns, so be sure before you commit.
Elemental Leatherworking BoP Patterns
Once you choose Elemental, your trainer teaches all three Primalstrike patterns automatically. All three require 375 skill to craft and are Bind on Pickup — only you can equip them.
The Primalstrike Set
| Item | Slot | Key Stats |
|---|---|---|
| Primalstrike Vest | Chest | Agility, Attack Power, Stamina |
| Primalstrike Belt | Waist | Agility, Attack Power, Stamina |
| Primalstrike Bracers | Wrist | Agility, Attack Power, Hit Rating |
The 3-piece set bonus gives +40 Attack Power, which makes wearing all three even more attractive for pure physical DPS. The Bracers alone — with their built-in Hit Rating — are arguably the most valuable single piece in the set for classes that are still working toward their hit cap early in Phase 1.
Materials for the Full Primalstrike Set
| Material | Total Needed |
|---|---|
| Primal Air | 16 |
| Primal Earth | 16 |
| Primal Fire | 16 |
| Primal Water | 16 |
| Knothide Leather | ~60 |
| Primal Nether | 6 |
Primal Nether is the bottleneck material. It drops from the final boss of every Heroic dungeon — one guaranteed per run. That means getting 6 of them requires 6 Heroic clears minimum. Plan accordingly, especially in Phase 1 when Heroic keys and competition are at their peak.
Other Elemental Leatherworking Patterns
Beyond the Primalstrike set, Elemental Leatherworking also gives you access to the Windhawk set — yes, the same set that Tribal Leatherworkers get. This is a healer-focused Leather set that’s typically used by Resto Druids and Resto Shamans.
The Windhawk Set (also available to Elemental spec)
| Item | Slot | Key Stats |
|---|---|---|
| Windhawk Hauberk | Chest | Spirit, Healing Power, Stamina |
| Windhawk Belt | Waist | Spirit, Healing Power, Stamina |
| Windhawk Bracers | Wrist | Spirit, Healing Power, MP5 |
This is why Elemental is arguably the most flexible Leatherworking spec in TBC Classic — it gives you access to both the physical DPS Primalstrike set and the healer Windhawk set. If you switch between roles or play on an alt, this versatility has real value.
Felstalker Set — BoE Reputation Patterns
These aren’t Elemental-exclusive, but they’re important to know about as a Leatherworker with strong physical DPS goals. The Felstalker set is tradeable (BoE) and comes from reputation vendors, making it a good option to craft and sell — or wear while you’re still working toward the full Primalstrike.
| Item | Slot | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Felstalker Breastplate | Chest | Thrallmar / Honor Hold — Exalted |
| Felstalker Belt | Waist | Thrallmar / Honor Hold — Exalted |
| Felstalker Bracers | Wrist | Thrallmar / Honor Hold — Exalted |
The Felstalker set is BoE, which means you can craft it for other players and charge a fee — or sell the pieces directly. Demand is consistent from physical DPS players who haven’t unlocked their own BoP set yet.
Can I Switch Out of Elemental Later?
Yes. You can drop Elemental Leatherworking and pick up a different spec by purchasing the “Soothsaying for Dummies” book in Tanaris (coords 65, 18) for 100 gold, which resets your specialization. After that, you can complete a different spec’s quest.
The catch is that you’ll lose access to your Elemental BoP patterns — including Primalstrike. Any pieces you’ve already crafted and equipped stay on your character, but you won’t be able to make more without switching back.
For most players, switching specs is worth considering when you outgrow the Primalstrike set and move into Phase 3+ content where different BoP patterns from other specs might be more relevant.
Is Elemental Leatherworking Worth It?
For Rogues and Feral Druids — absolutely. The Primalstrike set is among the best things you can do for your gear in Phase 1 without relying on raid drops. For Hunters, it’s a strong alternative to Dragonscale worth evaluating based on your current stat priorities.
The flexibility of also having access to Windhawk patterns gives Elemental an edge in versatility compared to the other specs. If you’re looking for a spec that covers you well from Phase 1 through later rerolling or role changes, Elemental is the safest choice.
