TBC Classic Tribal Leatherworking Guide – Windhawk Set & Wild Leather Quest Chain

Tribal Leatherworking is the caster-leather specialization in TBC Classic, built almost entirely around Resto and Balance Druids. It’s the most involved of the three Leatherworking specs to unlock — it requires a multi-step quest chain before you can even start the final quest — but the reward is the Windhawk set, one of the stronger pre-raid leather caster options available in the early phases of the TBC Classic Anniversary servers.

This guide walks you through the Wild Leather prerequisite chain, the unlock quest, trainer locations, the full Windhawk crafting materials, and exactly who should be choosing this spec.

Is Tribal Leatherworking Worth It?

For Resto and Balance Druids: yes, absolutely. The Windhawk set at skill 375 offers Intellect, Spirit, Spell Power, Spell Crit, and Healing Power all on leather pieces you can craft yourself. The 3-piece set bonus restores 8 mana per 5 seconds, which matters a lot for healers in the early phases of Anniversary content.

For everyone else: probably not. Tribal gear is exclusively leather with caster stats, so it’s a pretty narrow pick.

Class / Spec Recommendation
Resto Druid ✅ Best spec choice — Windhawk is strong pre-raid BiS
Balance Druid ✅ Solid — both healing and spell damage stats benefit you
Feral Druid ❌ Go Elemental instead
Resto Shaman ⚡ The Windhawk bracers work for them, but Dragonscale is generally the better shaman pick
Rogue / Hunter ❌ No benefit — go Elemental

Requirements to Unlock Tribal Leatherworking

Before you can specialize, you need:

  • Character Level: 40
  • Leatherworking Skill: 225
  • Completed: The full Wild Leather quest chain (explained below)

Tribal is the only Leatherworking spec that requires a prerequisite quest chain. The other two specs (Dragonscale and Elemental) are single-quest unlocks — Tribal adds a multi-step chain on top of that. Don’t skip this part or head to the final trainer without finishing it first; Se’Jib (Horde) won’t offer you the specialization quest until the chain is done.

Step 1: The Wild Leather Quest Chain

Both factions start this chain in Feralas. Go there first no matter which side you’re on.

Alliance: Talk to Pratt McGrubben in Feralas. Horde: Talk to Jangdor Swiftstrider in Feralas.

The chain has 6 quests total. The first quest, Wild Leather Armor, asks you to bring 10x Thick Leather. Completing it unlocks five more quests that each ask for crafted Wild Leather pieces plus Wildvine.

🎯 Important: The recipe for Turtle Scale Gloves is the only one you have to buy separately — your trainer doesn’t teach it. The quest giver NPC sells it, but it’s limited supply with a random ~30-minute respawn timer. Check the Auction House first to save yourself the wait.

After completing all 6 quests, you’ll get the Master of the Wild Leather achievement quest. To finish this one:

Alliance: Go to Darnassus and find Telonis. Horde: Go to Thunder Bluff and find Una.

Turn it in there, and you’ll have completed the prerequisite chain.

🎯 Tip: Gather all your materials before heading out. Feralas → Darnassus/Thunder Bluff → back to a trainer is a lot of travel. Prepare the Thick Leather, Wildvine, and all the required crafted pieces in one go.

Step 2: The Tribal Leatherworking Quest

Once the Wild Leather chain is finished, head to the final quest giver to complete Tribal Leatherworking.

Alliance: Find Caryssia Moonhunter in Feralas (/way 89.4 46.4) Horde: Find Se’Jib in Stranglethorn Vale (/way 36.6 34.2)

The final turn-in requires:

Both are crafted by Leatherworkers — you should already have the recipes from the quest chain. Complete this quest and you’re officially a Tribal Leatherworker.

Tribal Leatherworking Trainer Location

After unlocking the spec, your ongoing trainer is the same NPC who gave you the final quest:

  • Alliance: Caryssia Moonhunter — Feralas (/way 89.4 46.4)
  • Horde: Se’Jib — Stranglethorn Vale (/way 36.6 34.2)

All Tribal-exclusive recipes including the Windhawk set are learned from these trainers.

Craftable Gear: Windhawk Set

The Windhawk set is the main payoff for Tribal Leatherworking. All three pieces require Leatherworking 375, are Bind on Pickup, and need to be equipped to benefit from the set bonus.

3-piece set bonus: Restores 8 mana per 5 sec.

Item Key Stats Materials Needed
Windhawk Hauberk Stam, Int, Spirit 8x Heavy Knothide Leather, 20x Wind Scales, 16x Primal Air, 3x Primal Might, 2x Primal Nether
Windhawk Belt Int, Spirit, Spell Crit, Spell Power 6x Heavy Knothide Leather, 16x Wind Scales, 12x Primal Air, 2x Primal Might, 1x Primal Nether
Windhawk Bracers Stam, Int, Spirit, Spell Crit 4x Heavy Knothide Leather, 12x Wind Scales, 8x Primal Air, 1x Primal Might

Key materials to plan for:

Wind Scales are the main farming bottleneck — they drop from wind elementals and air-type creatures in Outland, primarily in Nagrand and Shadowmoon Valley. For the full set you need 48 total.

Primal Might is a transmuted material created by Alchemists from five different Primals. It’s not farmable directly, so either level Alchemy yourself or budget for Auction House prices — you need 6 for the full set.

Primal Nether drops from heroic dungeons. You need 3 for the complete set — plan ahead since they’re always in demand on Anniversary servers.

The Windhawk Bracers are the cheapest piece to craft (no Primal Nether required), so consider starting there while you farm the more expensive materials for the Hauberk and Belt.

Other Notable Tribal Recipes

Beyond the Windhawk endgame set, Tribal Leatherworking also gives you access to a couple of useful mid-progression pieces:

  • Primalstorm Breastplate — Skill 330, level 65. A good stepping stone chest piece while you work toward 375.
  • The full Wild Leather set recipes (from the quest chain itself) give decent leveling pieces for alts or early gearing.

Changing Your Specialization

If you want to swap away from Tribal Leatherworking later, visit Caryssia Moonhunter (Alliance) or Se’Jib (Horde) and pay 100 gold to unlearn it. Then head to Steamwheedle Port in Tanaris and click the “Soothsaying for Dummies” book inside one of the huts to pick a new specialization.

🎯 Note: Changing spec costs 100g at level 70 and 50g at level 60. All Tribal-exclusive recipes are lost when you swap, but any BoP gear you’ve already crafted and equipped stays with you.

Quick Summary

  • Unlock requires: Level 40, Leatherworking 225, and the full Wild Leather quest chain

  • Endgame set at 375: Windhawk (Hauberk, Belt, Bracers) — leather with Spell Power, Healing, Spell Crit, Spirit
  • 3-piece set bonus: 8 mana per 5 sec
  • All spec recipes are Bind on Pickup
  • Best for: Resto Druid and Balance Druid

FAQ

Who should take Tribal Leatherworking in TBC Classic?

Tribal Leatherworking is best for Resto and Balance Druids. The Windhawk set provides Intellect, Spirit, Spell Power, Spell Crit, and Healing Power on leather pieces — stats that directly benefit both healing and caster Druid specs. Feral Druids and Rogues should choose Elemental instead, as Tribal gear offers no physical DPS value.

Why can’t I start the Tribal Leatherworking quest?

Tribal Leatherworking requires completing the Wild Leather prerequisite quest chain before the final quest becomes available. Both factions must start this chain in Feralas with Pratt McGrubben (Alliance) or Jangdor Swiftstrider (Horde). Horde players who go directly to Se’Jib in Stranglethorn Vale without finishing Feralas first won’t see the specialization quest.

What is the Windhawk set bonus?

Equipping all three Windhawk pieces (Hauberk, Belt, and Bracers) at the same time activates the 3-piece set bonus: Restores 8 mana per 5 seconds. This is in addition to the strong individual stats on each piece — Intellect, Spirit, Spell Power, Spell Crit, and Healing Power.

Where do Wind Scales drop in TBC Classic?

Wind Scales drop from wind elementals and air-type creatures in Outland, primarily in Nagrand and Shadowmoon Valley. They can also be purchased from the Auction House, though prices tend to be high in early phases of the Anniversary progression since they’re needed for all three Windhawk pieces.

Is Tribal Leatherworking good for gold making?

No. All Tribal specialization recipes produce Bind on Pickup gear that only you can equip. There’s nothing from the Tribal spec that can be sold for profit. If you want to make gold through Leatherworking, focus on non-specialization recipes like armor kits, which every Leatherworker can craft and sell freely.

Can I switch from Tribal to another Leatherworking specialization?

Yes. Visit your Tribal specialization trainer (Caryssia Moonhunter for Alliance in Feralas, or Se’Jib for Horde in Stranglethorn Vale) and pay 100 gold to unlearn the spec. Then interact with the Soothsaying for Dummies book in Steamwheedle Port, Tanaris to pick a new specialization.
