Vashj’ir is WoW’s iconic underwater zone introduced in Cataclysm, sitting off the western coast of the Eastern Kingdoms beneath the Great Sea. Whether you’re heading there to level, farm transmog, run Throne of the Tides, or just exploring, getting there isn’t immediately obvious — especially if you’ve never done the intro quest chain. This guide covers every method to reach Vashj’ir, for both Cataclysm Classic and Retail WoW, whether you want to use the portal, take the boat, or fly in the hard way.
How to Get to Vashj’ir from Orgrimmar (Horde)
Method 1 — Earthshrine Portal (Fastest, Recommended)
The quickest Horde route is through the Western Earthshrine in Orgrimmar, located in the Valley of Wisdom. Head to the circular pool area with the Cataclysm portals and look for the Vashj’ir portal — it teleports you straight to Smuggler’s Scar in Kelp’thar Forest underwater.

- 📍 Location: Western Earthshrine, Valley of Wisdom, Orgrimmar
- ✅ Cataclysm Classic: Portal is open by default at launch — no quest required
- ⚠️ Retail: Portal requires completing The Eye of the Storm, offered by Farseer Krogar at the Earthshrine
Method 2 — Mercenary Boat from Bladefist Bay
If you haven’t unlocked the portal yet, start the intro quest chain. Pick up A Personal Summons (H) from the Warchief’s Command Board in the Valley of Strength (coordinates 49, 76), then speak to Farseer Krogar. This sends you to Bladefist Bay southeast of Orgrimmar, where a phased mercenary ship appears and sails you to Vashj’ir.
How to Get to Vashj’ir from Stormwind (Alliance)
Method 1 — Earthshrine Portal (Fastest, Recommended)
Alliance players use the Eastern Earthshrine, found northwest of Stormwind Keep near the lake. The Vashj’ir portal here drops you into Kelp’thar Forest just like the Horde version.
- 📍 Location: Eastern Earthshrine, northwest of Stormwind Keep
- ✅ Cataclysm Classic: Open by default at launch
- ⚠️ Retail: Unlocked by completing The Eye of the Storm, offered by Naraat the Earthspeaker at the Eastern Earthshrine
Method 2 — Mercenary Boat from Stormwind Harbor
Pick up A Personal Summons (A) from the Hero’s Call Board in Stormwind’s Trade District (coordinates 32, 71). After speaking to Naraat the Earthspeaker, head to Stormwind Harbor — the northernmost dock. A phased mercenary ship will appear and carry you to Vashj’ir.
How to Get to Vashj’ir Without a Quest (Flying Method)
Already have flying? You can reach Vashj’ir without any quest — but it’s risky due to fatigue damage over open water. You’ll need at least 280% flying speed to make it before dying.
| Starting Point | Direction | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dun Morogh (western tip) | Fly straight west | Most reliable route — shortest open water crossing |
| Stormwind Harbor Lighthouse | Fly west-northwest | Enable auto-run and watch fatigue bar |
| Ruins of Gilneas | Fly southwest | Longer crossing — only for 310%+ mount speed |
⚡ Tip: Once you land, there’s a flight point at Sandy Beach — a thin strip of land just above Kelp’thar Forest. This flight master connects to Undercity (Horde) and Ironforge (Alliance). From Sandy Beach you can use the seahorse travel service to move between the underwater quest hubs.
⚠️ Note: Flying in without doing the intro quests means you won’t have Sea Legs — the buff that gives you underwater breathing and faster movement in Vashj’ir. It’s strongly recommended to complete at least the opening quest chain to get this.
How to Get to Vashj’ir in Retail WoW (Dragonflight / The War Within)
In modern Retail WoW, the process is the same as described above — use the Earthshrine portals in Orgrimmar or Stormwind. If you haven’t unlocked the portal, pick up the starting quest from the Hero’s Call Board (Alliance) or Warchief’s Command Board (Horde) in the capital cities, or speak directly to Naraat the Earthspeaker / Farseer Krogar at the Earthshrine.
Alternatively, in Retail you can simply fly there manually from Dun Morogh if you have a flying mount unlocked — the Dragonflight Dragonriding mounts make the crossing much easier than older flying speeds.

About Vashj’ir 🌊
Vashj’ir is an underwater zone off the western coast of Khaz Modan, introduced in World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. Designed for players level 78–82 (Cataclysm Classic) or available as legacy content in Retail, it’s split into three sub-zones: Kelp’thar Forest, Shimmering Expanse, and Abyssal Depths. The zone also contains the Throne of the Tides dungeon entrance in the Abyssal Depths.
The zone features unique underwater movement mechanics — once you earn the Sea Legs buff from the intro quest chain, you can move freely in all directions underwater, and you can use special seahorse mounts to travel quickly between quest hubs.
