This guide covers the best farming spots for every major material Skinning produces in Outland, from basic Knothide Leather all the way to rare scales that Leatherworkers actually compete over.

Knothide Leather Farming

Knothide Leather is the bread and butter of Skinning in Outland. Leatherworkers need it in massive quantities to level up and craft endgame gear, which keeps demand consistently strong from day one of the expansion.

Best Spots for Knothide Leather

Hellfire Peninsula — Hellboars & Ravagers (Skill 300–330)

This is where you’ll start when you first enter Outland. The Helboars and Ravagers around Honor Hold and Thrallmar are packed tightly and respawn quickly. Great for raw Knothide volume while your skill is still climbing.

🎯 Tip: If you see a pile of corpses left by questing players, skin them. You don’t have to kill the mob yourself — free leather is free gold.

Terokkar Forest — Ravagers (Skill 310–330)

The southwest edge of Hellfire near the Terokkar border has Ravagers that respawn fast enough to loop continuously. Good alternative if Hellfire feels crowded.

Nagrand — Talbuks & Clefthoofs (Skill 330+)

Nagrand is simply the best open-world Skinning zone in TBC Classic Anniversary. Wide open terrain, dense beast populations, and fast respawns make it ideal for building efficient circular routes. You’ll pull Knothide Leather in volume here while also having a chance at Thick Clefthoof Leather from Clefthoofs.

Thick Clefthoof Leather Farming

Thick Clefthoof Leather is where Skinning starts making real money. It’s required for Drums of Battle and several top-tier leg armor kits — items that Leatherworkers craft repeatedly for raid progression. Demand stays strong across multiple phases.

Best Spot: Nagrand — Clefthoof Bulls (Western Half)

The western side of Nagrand, particularly around Garadar and Telaar, is the gold standard for this material. Clefthoof Bulls and Aged Clefthoofs in that area have roughly a 27–30% chance to drop Thick Clefthoof Leather per skin. The mob level in Nagrand increases as you move west, so prioritize the higher-level bulls for better yields.

⚡ If you’re an AoE class — Paladin, Mage, Balance Druid — you can pull groups of Clefthoofs together and skin them all in one go. This dramatically increases your leather per hour.

🎯 Market tip: When raw Knothide Leather prices drop, have a Leatherworking alt convert Knothide Leather Scraps into full sheets. This can increase your effective sell value by 15–20%.

Cobra Scales Farming

Cobra Scales are a premium material tied to high-end Leatherworking patterns for level 70 gear. The supply is naturally limited because only a specific type of mob drops them, which keeps prices elevated throughout the expansion.

Best Spot: Shadowmoon Valley — Coilskar Cobras & Shadow Serpents

The northern part of Shadowmoon Valley has the two serpent types that drop Cobra Scales: Coilskar Cobras and Shadow Serpents. This is the most concentrated spot for this material and is generally less contested than Nagrand.

Alternative Spot: Nagrand — Twilight Ridge

Twilight Serpents at Twilight Ridge in eastern Nagrand also yield Cobra Scales along with Knothide Leather. It’s a solid backup if Shadowmoon feels crowded, and many players pass through this area without Skinning — meaning free corpses to loot.

Nether Dragonscales Farming

Nether Dragonscales are required for Dragonscale Leatherworking recipes and certain high-end armor patterns. Because Dragonkin aren’t as commonly farmed as beasts, this material can hold strong value on the Auction House.

Best Spots for Nether Dragonscales

Netherstorm — Nether Drakes & Nether Dragons

The eastern edge of Netherstorm is packed with Nether Drakes and Nether Dragons. This is arguably the best concentrated spot. Many players come here to complete quests and kill these dragonkin without having Skinning — which means you can circuit through the zone and skin leftover corpses for essentially free Nether Dragonscales and Knothide Leather.

Blade’s Edge Mountains — Lesser Nether Drakes & Nether Whelps

South of Death’s Door in Blade’s Edge Mountains you’ll find Lesser Nether Drakes and Nether Whelps. A bit more scattered than Netherstorm, but worth it if you’re already in the zone or want a change of pace.

Shadowmoon Valley — Enslaved Netherwing Drakes

A less common spot, but viable. The dragonkin around Shadowmoon Valley drop Nether Dragonscales under specific conditions. Pair this with Cobra Scale farming in the same zone for an efficient dual-material run.

Skinning Tips That Actually Matter

A few things that separate an efficient Skinner from someone just grinding aimlessly:

✅ Skill requirement formula: Your skill divided by 5 equals the maximum mob level you can skin. At 350 skill you reliably skin level 70 mobs. At 360 you never miss on any non-elite in Outland.

✅ You can skin other players’ kills — as long as the mob has been looted, you can skin it. This is free leather on top of your normal route.

✅ Hunters have a significant edge — Track Beasts lets you see every beast on the minimap, which makes route planning faster and cuts idle time by 15–20%.

✅ +Skinning glove enchant helps you skin higher-level mobs earlier. If you’re trying to squeeze into Outland zones at the low end of the skill requirement, this matters.

✅ Finkle’s Skinner (drops from The Beast in UBRS) and Zulian Slicer (from High Priest Thekal in ZG) both grant +10 Skinning and double as actual weapons. Worth picking up if you have them.

• Nagrand Clefthoof route (AoE class): 300–600g/hr during Phase 1 when demand is at its peak
• Netherstorm Nether Drake circuit: Solid mid-phase income, especially when Dragonscale Leatherworkers are crafting actively
• Cobra Scale farming: Smaller volume, but high unit price — check your realm’s AH for current prices before committing to this route
